Skinny jeans: in, then out, then in again?? Are they?

My Uni students reckon skinny jeans have come BACK in now. Is that right? Can I actually re-wear the skinnies I have languishing in the drawer? I'm so confused!

I don't mean to be eyde but I never understand why a friend woman worries about what's in or not. I just wear what I like. In fact I might even avoid something that's in, because I don't want it to look like I'm trying to be cool.

If you like them wear them. Who cares about what is in fashion.

People just like different things. Some follow football, some follow fashion, some like to eat out a lot, some have expensive opera habits. I don’t understand formula 1, but I can see it’s exciting for some people!

I have my own style, inasmuch as I tend to buy the same kind of clothes and colours over and over, but I also care about what’s in fashion. So I haven’t worn a very short skirt in a decade, whereas my mum would have done when she was my age in a different decade.

The people who come onto S&B to discuss it?

gumpit · 09/02/2025 10:00

Yes, they are back-ish.

Skinny and tight to the ankle - no.

Skinny grazing but not clinging to the lower calf/ankle - yes.

So basically: skinny slims

Jeggings - absolutely not.

I don't make the rules. The fashion gods decide.

It gets complicated because what’s mostly sold as ‘skinny fit’ is actually just a straight leg fit, which has never been out of fashion.

(I’d reserve ‘skinny fit’ as a term for Elvis-type drainpipes that gather at the ankles, and which frankly look good on nobody.)

Newmeagain · 09/02/2025 12:38

i like the look of wide jeans in warmer months when you can wear them with a fitted top tucked in.

in winter I find skinnies or slim fit jeans work better for me with big jumpers.

PinotNoir1 · 09/02/2025 12:47

This is good to know! I'm not really fashionable but have different styles of jeans.

I like skinnies with boots, but in warmer months what shoes are best?

Like a previous poster, I've been liking straight jeans (M&S siennas) as an alternative and look great with Chelsea boots.

pippapipps · 09/02/2025 12:50

Straight and wide jeans are what I'm seeing out and about..did see a young girl yesterday wearing skinnies and I've seen the odd older woman in skinnies.
I lived in skinnies until last year now I wear mostly slim straight jeans, I still wear my black coated skinny jeans from river island..have several pairs of those and prefer them with winter long coats as feel the coat makes you look dowdy with a wider Jean.
Have still got a good few pairs of denim skinnies I now wear round the house occasionally but have also gave loads away to charity

I agree. And whatever people on MN think, those stretchy tight all the way to the ankle jegging type skinny has been relegated to fashion purgatory for many many years now.

Skinnies are coming back but they are not that sort. It's a very very slim leg straight sort of skinny now. Not a stretchy legging/jean monstrosity

I’d almost forgotten, but c20 years ago I bought a very tight size 8 RL pair, which prompted my then-bf to describe me as ‘sexy David Coverdale’. (In fairness to him, I had the haircut to match too.)

This describes my understanding of it. Slim rather than skin tight. And ankle length.

Any examples of where to buy the new style of skinny jeans? Wouldn't mind any Next examples please 😊
