Top needed for appearance on camera

I'm being filmed for something next week and need a new top. Not white, not stripes, not small check which can make camera go funny. Planning on wearing these black trousers from M&S and a pair of boots. https://www.marksandspencer.com/jersey-straight-leg-trousers-with-stretch/p/clp60506862 I shall probably be sitting down so you won't see my bottom half anyway. I also have these trousers in grey.

Have £50 voucher to spend in John Lewis so that's the budget for a top. Needs to be a work/office style top, don't want anything tight fitting, must have sleeves, size 14. Too much to choose from on website - any personal shoppers out there with any recommendations?

HUSH Elise Print Top, Multi

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 07/02/2025 16:33

That top will not work on camera.

Can you get a silk or fake silk plain shirt

CharityShopChic · 07/02/2025 16:34

Should also add I'm 52!!

I've worn it on camera several times after seeing our local news reporter with it on 😊

Nobody’s Child Peter Pan Collar Organic Cotton Blouse ( Stone ) £20 reduced from £59
Jigsaw Satin Ruffle Top ( Blue ) £49 reduced from £99

Both John Lewis and available in size 14.

SoScarletItWas · 07/02/2025 17:24

I don’t know your colouring but this has some interesting features (subtle!) that will stop it looking boring and flat on camera:

Or this in burgundy:

Loads of options, thank you all.

I often wear a posh t shirt/fitted jumper and a snood or scarf. Audio techs like that because they can hide the mike in the scarf, and I think the scarf shows off my face (balances out pear shape)

That's lovely - I've just ordered one!

Chillilounger · 07/02/2025 17:58

It's a lovely tip but I returned because it's a bit dark irl

LeatherJacketWedding · 08/02/2025 09:04

Just go for a classic, satin shirt in a block colour. Go for whatever colour suits you, but a lovely champagne colour is timeless.

Bestthriller · 08/02/2025 15:19

It somewhat depends on why you’re being filmed op

Molly499 · 08/02/2025 15:44

Something plain or textured will be best for on camera, prints can be very messy.

GoldenLegend · 08/02/2025 20:16

I have had to organise photoshoots in the past and I used to say to people wear a plain bright colour. Not black or white, not pastel and not too dark. It makes a huge difference to the way you look in the shot.

CharityShopChic · 09/02/2025 10:35

I'd rather not say what it's for. Pre-recorded not live. I couldn't choose on the John Lewis website after taking advice from here and student DD so ordered this top from M&S

https://www.marksandspencer.com/printed-top/p/clp60714697

I also told them I will bring an option of a plain purple jumper - I am going to be with another person who I don't know and have no way of contacting, it would be sod's law that she also turns up in something black with spots.

I didn’t know want to know the programme! 😆

it is more whether you are appearing to make an expert’s opinion on the economic climate OR about a resident’s view on the resurfacing of the road!

SmudgeButt · 10/02/2025 13:17

Can't help as I'm useless at fashion stuff.

And I wasn't going to respond at all as initially I thought the post was asking about a TOY needed for appearance on camera and I just thought that was weird. Yet another "shoulda gone to specsavers" moment.

whatawonderfultime · 10/02/2025 20:16

The one you've chosen is making my eyes go funny as a still image, I can't imagine what it's like on video.

Ilovemyshed · 10/02/2025 20:20

I think black and spotty is a a bad idea for camera.

You need a brighter colour, just plain one colour, that suits your colouring.

Think red, pink, a bright blue or green, etc.

Neutrals, black will drain your face and spots/pattern won't work.

GreenFingersHelp · 10/02/2025 22:24

Maybe narrow it down a bit OP?

Do you prefer

a shirt?
a blouse?
a jumper? Cool fabric or wool?

A pattern?
Plain?

V neck?
Round neck?
High polo neck?

Which colours do you suit?
Light, bright, neutral?

I'd cast your eye over Boden as well. Sienna cotton shirt?

Agree that black isn't good.

What colours do you suit?

Blues? Greens? Pink? Purple?
Floral? Plain?

Look at Jigsaw Outlet on their website- lots of nice blouses in greens and blues that are cheaper than the link.
