Thinking about Wedding Guest attire for August!

LookItsMeAgain · 06/02/2025 21:35

Yes, you read that right - I’m thinking now (in Feb) about what I might wear as a guest to a wedding in August this year and I was thinking about this trouser suit with some sort of blouse/sleeveless top.

What do you think? Will I be melting or will I be ok? Or is it completely wrong?

It just looks so comfy!

It's very nice;
It meets my criteria for occasion wear of "after the wedding can I wear the hell out of it and get my money's worth?";

But, there is a risk you'll be too hot. You can take the jacket off of course but you'll lose the overall effect.

Bailiwitch · 06/02/2025 23:06

Much too wintery for August!

user1492757084 · 06/02/2025 23:08

Perfect in pale natural silk and linen fabric.

Too hot if it is a synthetic.

Bailiwitch · 07/02/2025 06:59

How about this one:

Next rust linen mix

Much more seasonal, but the colour would take you into autumn. More contemporary cut. New stock so coordinating trousers available.

Pumpkincozynights · 07/02/2025 07:04

Fabulous. If it’s extremely hot you can take the jacket off once the wedding ceremony has finished.

DJrocks · 07/02/2025 07:07

OP, I have a wedding in April and bought that very suit. It’s been returned. Cheap and static as hell. Awful.

nzeire · 07/02/2025 08:15

Eeek, love the colour, but a bit shiney and cheap looking

MiddleAgedDread · 07/02/2025 09:02

Velvet is very wintery thing to me, more suited to winter weddings and christmas parties. i think you'd look out of place in august.

Lentilweaver · 07/02/2025 09:05

I find polyester velvet too shiny and synthetic.

fruitbrewhaha · 07/02/2025 09:13

God no! You’ll be boiling. Velvet is a winter fabric for a reason, it insulating. Even if the weather is below average in August this year it will still be warm. You need to wait for summer clothes to be in the shops. If you’re keen on a suit a linen or cotton suit in a pale colour would work with a floaty lightweight top.

Ceramiq · 07/02/2025 10:12

Buy a silk dress

TriangleLight · 07/02/2025 10:13

It would look odd in summer time and too hot

Stripytablecloth · 07/02/2025 10:27

It’s nice but Velvet is very much a winter fabric and I think it will look and feel out of place in August. Plenty of other suits in other fabrics if that’s what you like

LemonTT · 07/02/2025 12:23

Buy a lightweight suit in wool, cotton or linen in the summer sales. The sales are in July. If you want to get wear now, look in the Next clearance section but stick to natural fabric. Suits are classics and you should buy in the sales if you can.

ohgoshitshappening · 07/02/2025 12:26

Lovely suit, and wear what you want, but really, a darkish blue velvet suit for an August wedding?! No way!

SorenLorensonsInvisibleFriend · 07/02/2025 12:29

If it helps, I got married in August and the weather was very nice but breezy. Also, location of the ceremony matters as I'm Catholic so our churches are always freezing! However, it was very much a light dress/cardigan/linen situation despite the cool. I think we forget just how warm it is in summer compared to these wintry days!

TheyCallMeMrsBug · 07/02/2025 12:29

Sorry OP I agree with everyone else, velvet just won’t look right in the summer. I love the colour though.

curious79 · 07/02/2025 12:31

August bank holiday about three years ago was absolutely freezing. Literally puffer coat weather. I think if you bought it and you can afford to have something in reserve you might use it another time if it was warm. But I would in general think that’s too warm for August wedding.

madaboutpurple · 07/02/2025 12:32

I would reckon it will be not a useful outfit for a summer wedding. You are going to be far too hot. In the summer cotton will be best.

That's nice but as I have red hair I think that might just be a bit too much on the amber/rust/auburn scale

Surely the crucial question is where is the wedding? If in the north of Scotland then it'll be fine, possibly a bit cold depending on the day. If it's in London then you'll be roasting.

It's in Ireland so kind of between the weather that you'd experience in Scotland and what you might get in London.

Not for me.
Velvet is definitely a Winter material.
