Considering a Brazilian Wax

CoffeeLover87 · 01/02/2025 12:17

Hi all,

So, I’ve never waxed down there before, but I’m seriously considering it. Shaving has become such a chore – it’s tedious, annoying, and honestly, my skin isn’t loving it. I end up with irritation every other time, and having to do it every few days. DH and I both prefer me hairless, but I’m starting to wonder if there’s a better way.

I’ve been thinking about trying a Brazilian wax since I’ve heard it lasts longer and causes less irritation than shaving. But here’s the thing: I’m a total wimp when it comes to pain. I dread getting my eyebrows waxed because even that makes me wince, so the thought of a Brazilian is making me sweat a bit.

Has anyone here had one? How bad is the pain, really? How long does it take, and is it actually more practical than shaving in the long run? Any tips for a first-timer? Or, if you think it’s a terrible idea for someone with zero pain tolerance, feel free to talk me out of it!

Thanks in advance

It hurts. HURTS. There will be people who say hot wax is less painful than strip waxing etc , and it does hurt less after a while (maybe 4 - 6 sessions?). But it does still hurt.

And, you're smooth for maybe 3 weeks then it starts to grow back.

It's smoother than shaving for sure, and lasts so much longer, but deffo start with a bikini line wax first before going full Brazilian!

chubbychihauhau · 01/02/2025 12:42

Took me 20 years to pluck up the courage. I got sick of shaving and the itchiness. I went straight to a Hollywood. Yes it hurt but it's so so worth it. I regret not getting it done years ago.

fruitypancake · 01/02/2025 12:44

It's instantaneous pain but very brief and not very painful, only a mild wince sort of pain . Honestly it's fine

Yourfootisinmysirachamayo · 01/02/2025 12:48

I think if you dread your eyebrows being waxed, then a Brazilian is not for you. Maybe you could save to have it lasered off instead?

dontcryformeargentina · 01/02/2025 12:51

It's not for faint hearted, it hurts! Positives- smooth , long lasting, quick . Negatives- hurts like hell / electric shock type of pain.

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 01/02/2025 13:01

I don’t find that it hurts! Take some pain relief 20 minutes before, make sure that you are no less then ten days pre/post period and it will be fine.

It’s like ripping off a plaster!

spacepies · 01/02/2025 13:01

I wax my legs and arms only im not brave for anything else but really have been thinking of going for it.
But i have heard about ingrown hairs happening and the regrowth itch.
So will be watching this thread.

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 01/02/2025 13:03

I’ve never had ingrown hairs or much itching with regrowth. I go every 4-5 weeks.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 01/02/2025 13:33

I'd go for laser hair removal.

I'd go for laser hair removal.

That’s an interesting suggestion. I believe that would be permanent, but I think it would be quite expensive.

You need the V Mould! Absolutely game changer

GrapefruitFrog · 01/02/2025 14:20

It really fucking hurts. No way would I do a full whammy. I get a “bikini ultra” which is what they suggest for swimwear, then I trim the rest so it’s tidy. But even when they do the soft skin of the upper inner thigh I’m nearly in tears.

OllyBJolly · 01/02/2025 14:38

Yes, maybe try a less radical wax before going for a Brazilian. Go to a specialist salon that does intimate waxing - far more comfortable and efficient.

SoScarletItWas · 01/02/2025 14:42

I find it less painful than having my legs done! So much so that I only had my legs done once, whereas I have my Brazilian every 7 weeks or so.

But yes, it’s a brief zippp of pain as she pulls it off. You can help this by holding the skin taut. And it does get less painful and grow back more sparse (although honestly this takes ages to actually happen). I’ve never had any soreness afterwards.

louderthan · 01/02/2025 14:43

I gave up on waxing, too expensive! I use Veet and it's much easier. Less sore than shaving and you end up much smoother.

I tried using Veet, but it caused too much irritation to my skin. I only used it once, and it seems like I had an allergic reaction, so I completely stopped using it.

Surely inbetween waxes you have to let it grow to a certain length so then you aren't hair free all the time?

MirrorMirror00 · 01/02/2025 16:39

Laser is the way to go if you can afford it. Minimal pain, works really well.

glassof · 01/02/2025 16:57

I have everything off every 5-6 weeks. I take pain killers half hour before. It does help. Yes it's painful but it's 20 mins and done! You do have to let the hair grow between waxes though but the hair is softer and does lessen over time. I would like laser but I hate shaving and its expensive

CoffeeLover87 · 01/02/2025 17:05

The laser option sounds really tempting after reading the comments. I’m just curious about the cost – could anyone give me a rough idea of the price? Also, if it’s permanent, it might be worth it. Does anyone know how many sessions are usually needed and whether it’s truly permanent, with no touch-ups required afterward?

I would recommend laser too. I had about 4 sessions and significant hair loss. I then got pregnant so had to stop and did get some regrowth as you have to keep up the treatments. After baby I then bought an ipl machine and it's great, pretty much hairfree now and it's more cost effective and convenient. It is also so much less painful than waxing!

SoScarletItWas · 01/02/2025 17:49

@Star1619 how high into the bikini do you use the IPL? I’ve got one and it’s brilliant on legs and underarms. I’m never sure if I can use it on the bikini area. I usually get a Brazilian wax but would the IPL be ok used so thoroughly?!

Star1619 · 01/02/2025 18:30

Pretty much all over, as close in as I can get. Only really got hair very low on top and some underneath but working on those bits at a lower setting as it is abit painful

TheignT · 01/02/2025 18:35

It sounds like agony to me and I have quite a high pain threshold. Credit to people who've done it, particularly more than once.

Totally true, it doesn't seem like it's for the faint-hearted. 😅
