Talk to me about short hair!

BruceLeTerror · 31/01/2025 12:53

I've had shoulder length/long hair for ages for several reasons;
1) I hate going to the hairdressers 😂
2) I'm tall and a tomboy/have dogs/horses, and wear absolutely no make up, always in jeans/wellies and a few times in my younger days when I did have shorter hair (thousands of years ago!) I got mistaken for a man several times (V embarrassing)
3) I'm lazy, long hair = messy bun

However, as alas it comes to us all, age is catching up, hair is thinning and greying... and I'm wondering whether to get it all chopped off? Like Judi Dench short...

Ladies with shorter hair, how often do you have to go to the hairdressers for a trim? Any styles to avoid - and what is nice and easy to maintain?

Any thoughts appreciated :)

Thanking you 🙏

I’ve had everything from Judi Dench to mid back over the years and am currently settled on collar bone length.

Judi Dench - absolute max 5 weeks between appointments. Need to blow dry every day (mine is wavy) but it only takes a few minutes and is easy. You really need a good hairdresser that you trust and build a relationship with. Need a bit of styling product but save on conditioner. If you want to avoid being mistaken for a man you probably need to think about some make-up or earrings and do the blowdry.

Shoulder length - cut every 10-12 weeks but could go longer. No need to blow dry (waves/curls better air dried) but if I did it would take considerably longer. Spend more on conditioner. More versatile in terms of putting up etc.

Cut every 4-6 weeks depending on how fast it grows. Either hairdresser or clippers. Much easier than the faff of long hair, wash it, rub it with towel, run fingers through and done. I have it shorter in the summer, usually a no. 1 back and sides, bit longer on top. I'm also low maintenance, no make up here either.

QwestSprout · 31/01/2025 13:20

I have a shaggy pixie, I go every eight weeks as I don't mind the two weeks of being overlong (and it saves a considerable amount of money over the year).

Heavybuthopeful · 31/01/2025 13:27

I’ve had short and spiky hair (now bleached) for 35 years. Cut/roots every 6 (up to 8 at a stretch). Rub with a towel and put wax through every morning. Don’t own a hair dryer. Could not be easier.

suki1964 · 31/01/2025 13:29

Undercut shaggy pixie and I can get 3 months as I just change how I style it, its cut with a left parting, when its looking too shaggy I just part it to the right :)

Takes 2 mins to dry and a lot of time I don't use a hairdryer - handy during the 5 days we were without power this past week

Echobelly · 31/01/2025 13:31

I've had cropped hair most of my life aged 8-35 (then long for ten years, now short bob). It does need cutting every 8 weeks in a crop, it's very easy to look after. You may need to wash every day if you tend to greasiness.

I'll probably go back to a crop at some point myself.

Radionowhere · 31/01/2025 13:32

I've had mine very short, now grown out. It was definitely easier to manage short. Needed cut every 5 or 6 weeks.

ILY123 · 31/01/2025 13:35

Shorthair can look great but its higher maintenance, more difficult to hide a bad haircut, you will be mistaken for a man..if you can laugh it off great but if you have body dysmorphia or body insecurities then id advise you not. Lastly, most women look better with longer hair than short. Longer hair hides a multitude of sin, looks more feminine and youthful, disguises unattractive ears or neck/shoulder humps.

TheOGCCL · 31/01/2025 13:42

I tend to get my hair cut quite short, then leave it to grow. So I'm not always at the hairdressers and my hair is always slightly different.

🙄 You will be mistaken for a man, so you must be very brave to have short hair.

Only if you are a deeply wet lettuce.

Long hair on an elderly woman only looks good if it is thick and nicely styled. Thinning, straggly long hair drags the face down and accentuates jowls.

I’ve had very short hair in the past and I didn’t get mistaken for a man, ever. Including when wearing trousers and GASP no makeup. How ludicrous. Loads and loads of women have short hair.

Girasole02 · 31/01/2025 13:58

Pixie cut here. Have never been mistaken for a man, unless it's a guy who wears bright red lipstick.

I'm 61 and have had short hair since my teens. It was the fashion then. I've never been mistaken for a man nor have any of my friends with short hair

Longer hair can look awful on older people unless really well looked after.

But you wear make up, op doesn't. She's also tall and dresses casual/unisex and said herself she got mistaken for a man in the past.

Justkoko · 31/01/2025 14:03

Chin to shoulder bob here, fine hair. Cut can go up to 12 weeks if I want. Easiest hairdo for me, revlon one step takes just a few mins to dry and smooth it into shape, or hairdryer and round brush - there's nothing high maintenance about it.

Ahsheeit · 31/01/2025 14:06

No 2 round the back and sides, curly at the front top. Monthly visit to the barber. Job done. Use a bit of curl cream after washing and just leave it.

TheAirfryerQueen · 31/01/2025 14:07

I've tried short hair but I have a sticky-out kink on one side so it soon looks daft, and I found short hair with my thick, course hair very high maintenance. I couldn't be arsed in the end and grew it out. Also ...I hate going to the hairdresser's!!

It's now long, past my shoulders. I intend to get it cut to a long shaggy bob of sorts at some point. However, despite the prolific amount of salons in my city I have yet to find one I click with, sadly. (I know I am the problem, but I really do NOT want to chat, nor do I watch (insert reality show here), nor do I want to talk about my work.)

Rhubarbandfennel · 31/01/2025 14:09

Short hair is much more striking than long, it's easier to look good with short hair if you have a good bone structure. Needs cutting every 4 to 6 weeks. Long hair can definitely be good to hide behind - but avoid the aging, ubiquitous, highlighted shoulder length style.

Iheartmysmart · 31/01/2025 14:11

I’ve got really short hair. I wash it every day, it dries in minutes then I put a bit of styling powder on it and that’s me done. Get an haircut every four weeks. Being very short, I’ve occasionally been called son by someone stood behind me but couldn’t give a shit. Also never wear skirts or dresses and live in jeans and converse. Bit of mascara and lip balm is my makeup routine. Do what works for you and your lifestyle, other people’s opinions are utterly irrelevant.,

PinkTonic · 31/01/2025 14:22

I think it’s a matter of what suits the individual. I look awful with long hair, and I’ve tried several times. Shorter hair doesn’t have to be that high maintenance but the cut needs to do the heavy lifting. I’ve just swapped to a new hairdresser who is an excellent cutter and loves cutting short hair and it’s made a massive difference to the amount of effort I need to put in compared to the previous guy (who needs his scissors confiscated).

Carpetmoths · 31/01/2025 14:25

I have short hair and got ‘called out’ for being trans in a bathroom by a member of the ‘we can always tell’ (apparently not!) brigade. Apart from it confusing silly bigots, I love my short hair. It looks a bit messy about 4 ish weeks after a trim but I’ve learned how to do it myself to save money- it’s surprisingly easy. It’s a pixie with a longer fringe. Sometimes I shave an undercut in for a bit of fun!

Yoghurtandspoon · 31/01/2025 14:32

I have short hair and I love it. I go to the barbers and get quite a boyish cut. I have a long neck and good facial bone structure and it suits me much better than long hair. I've never been mistaken for a man - not sure I'd ever mistake a short haired woman for a man.

It does need cutting more frequently (before this I had incredibly long hair that I'd always wear in a ponytail because I couldn't be bothered to cut or style it) but the benefit is that it takes far less styling. Drying is so quick and easy, just a couple of minutes blasted with the hair dryer, after spraying in some salt spray. Then I put some styling powder in it and just sort of scrunch it in to give it some texture. I just bought the men's styling products they used at the barbers. It takes minutes. My hair looks much thicker and more voluminous now and I get so many compliments on it.

NotMeNoNo · 31/01/2025 14:36

I've had short hair at least half my adult life and have never been mistaken for a man. I think people forget that since the 1920s there have been several periods of fashion when short hairstyles on women were almost universal (in the UK) even by the late Queen and Princess Diana.

My experience is that you need regular, good haircuts but then day to day maintenance is very quick especially with the right styling wax/gel etc. It can be a strong look, you have to own it with confidence!

But don't you know @Carpetmoths, that never happens, because every human has a built-in Birth Sex Detector that is never ever wrong. 🤔

I have had Judi Dench-short hair for many years. I've never been mistaken for a man or boy, even on the many days I don't wear makeup. I look much better with short hair than long, and it's super easy care on a daily basis - for many years I didn't own a comb or brush. I can either blow dry in about 2 mins or air-dry. Style with a little paste and my fingers, done. In an ideal world I'd cut about every six weeks, but I often stretch it to 8.
