Since having my little girl 9 months ago the constant hand washing and washing up has wreaked havoc on my hands!! They're so sore and chapped all the time and nothing really helps. I've tried O Keefes as so many people rave about it but it's not cutting it! The cold isn't helping atm either Confused does anyone have any suggestions for a super hardcore cream? Thank you!

I recently bought O'Keeffes ( the handcream/overnight cream/footcream)
They are brilliant IMO , I use the overnight and footcreams with gloves/socks ( intensive overnight treatment )

I am handwashing over and over at work and use gloves (HCP)

I tried everything and nothing cut it for me. Now I have a large tub of Vaseline on the kitchen side with the lid off and just scoop a bit out and use that. It’s the most effective thing ever, you won’t look back and it’s cheap as anything 👍 trust me try it

KittenBiscuit · 24/01/2025 07:39

Vaseline Intensive Care Advanced Repair - wonderful stuff and doesn't make your hands feel greasy like some of the others I have tried. I have a tube of it by every sink in the house!

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 24/01/2025 07:40

Another vote for the neutrogena Norwegian one.

FishFlaked · 24/01/2025 07:42

You may be allergic to SLS it’s in hand wash, toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, all sorts of things OP. Sodium Laureth Sulfate.
Even gentle washing up liquids like Ecover dry out my hands too much, so best to always use gloves !or anything washing up, harsh or chemical.
Always use a gentle natural soap or hand wash ;for your hands- check the labels- some whole ranges are fine like anything by Faith in Nature for example is fine doesn’t use SLS at all and smells amazing. Dove or any of the plasticky hand creams actually make the problem worse for me.

I haven’t yet found a hand cream that works once the problem has set in, so for now, tackling the problem at source is my best hope. To ward off day to day dryness from the weather etc I use Geranium and orange hand cream from Neal’s Yard Remedies. That is gentle and not greasy or sticky and smells lovely. I tried all the greasy natural ones like Burt’s Bees and they didn’t help so it’s not the case that natural ingredients always works either.

I really rate the Neom hand balm. Keeps my hands in good shape. It’s not that easily absorbed and you have to work it in but my hands appreciate it.

Riverswims · 24/01/2025 08:34

how about you wash your hands with dermol 500 then use epimax or aveeno? dermol won’t make your hands slippery and I’m advised by dermatologist to wash my body with it so it’s fine for hands too it’s in a pump. you can buy dermol 500 and epimax on amazon/boots

podthedog · 24/01/2025 08:58

Hydromol Intensive. Has 10% urea. I used it when I had dishydritoc eczema. GP recommended it. Can buy online. Must be the Intensive one.

quantumbutterfly · 24/01/2025 09:02

Wash your hands with an emollient handwash, they're expensive but at this time of year the alternative is cracked and bleeding hands.

Also make sure you dry your hands properly and wear gloves or buggy mitts when you're out and about .

eleanoreleanoreleanor · 24/01/2025 09:13

I use Superdrug intensive moisture hand cream, it's in a teal coloured tube and has 'softens and smooths hands' written on it in big letters at the top. It's out of stock frequently. And gloves in cold weather especially if you're pushing a buggy along!

TheFormidableMrsC · 24/01/2025 09:20

Another one for O'Keeffes or Body Shop Hemp cream. Not keen on the smell but it does a great job as a product.

ThoroughlyModernNotMillie · 24/01/2025 09:25

L'occitane Shea butter hand cream as others have said. I have gone from their 20% Shea to the 25% Shea intensive hand balm, it is fantastic and even better than the other one.

Leumurshavethumbs · 24/01/2025 09:52

I use O'Keefe's overnight before bed (still mourning the loss of Body Shop Almond over night hand butter), and Garnier Hand Repair (red tube) in the morning.

If you've got the money, La Roche Cicaplast. If not, get a standard emollient ointment (not a cream).

Another vote for this. It goes a long way, absorbs really fast and was the only thing that tackled my cracked dry hands during lockdown.

butteredbarmbrack · 24/01/2025 12:03

Team Occitane. I started using it in the nappy changing, bottle prep stage when I was also suffering with chapped hands and it's still my favourite twenty (gulp!) years on. I often include it in gifts for new parents!

Scrabbelator · 24/01/2025 12:10

Neutrogena all the way. You only need to use a tiny amount of it.
Aldi and Lidl do good knock-off versions of it at a fraction of the price. I use those throughout the day, and Neutrogena at night.

iamnotalemon · 24/01/2025 12:19

Superdrug has a vitamin E hand cream which is very rich and it's not expensive.

tweetypi · 24/01/2025 12:21

Body shop hemp hand cream is amazing.

Working hands

OP said in her opening post that she's already tried this! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Aldi's version of Neutrogena

Neutragena with red lid is the best. I also have Superdrug intensive in the green-blue tube near the sink. It’s not as intensive as the Neutragena but rubs in well.
DH used to swear by Bodyshop Hemp but not sure they still do it. The tube we have is very old.

They do still sell the Bodyshop Hemp! Bought some instore for DD a couple of weeks ago. You're right, it is very good.

henlake7 · 24/01/2025 15:57

I think the best thing to do is get multiple bottles of handcream (cheap or expensive but preferable in pump bottles for ease of use) and just spread them all over your house.
Then use a really intensive one with cotton gloves when you go to bed.

I often get cracked and bleeding hands as I wash my hands alot at work (nurse) and then come home to 3 elderly dogs with continence issues meaning Im constantly cleaning up and washing my hands at home too.
As long as you remember to put handcream on every time you wash your hands they tend to stay hydrated.
(not always easy I know. Ive cleaned up after the dogs many times, washed my hands, and when Ive turned around somebody has peed on the floor again so more handwashing!)🙄

CaveMum · 24/01/2025 17:25

My hands crack across the knuckles every winter without fail thanks to years of working outside, despite giving up the outdoor job 20-odd years ago! The only things that work for my hands are the Neutrogena Norwegian Formula (red or blue lid) or Burts Bees hand salve - it comes in a tin and looks like wax, you have to rub it to warm it up and it melts into your hands.

It’s out of stock online with Boots but Amazon have it: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Burts-Bees-Natural-Moisturising-Salve/dp/B00063M2O8/ref=asc_df_B00063M2O8?mcid=495aebf5ee123391a56a2888f7450c6a&th=1&hvocijid=15594201939941966847-B00063M2O8-&hvexpln=74&tag=googshopuk-21&linkCode=df0&hvadid=696285193871&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=15594201939941966847&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9217640&hvtargid=pla-2281435178538&gad_source=1

Palmers coco butter. I find the neutrogena very greasy. It doesn't get absorbed. And the coco butter has a lovely baby-friendly vanilla smell. My hands get so dry and this is the only thing that works. At night I sometimes put Savlon on like hand cream. Neat almond oil is good too.

bugalugs45 · 24/01/2025 17:30

Elizabeth Arden 8 hour is the best hand cream I've ever used , smells a bit medical though which I love but is definitely an aquired taste
