Chanel makeup - is it worth it?

BecuaseIWantItThatWay · 04/01/2025 04:03

Would like to know your experience of using Chanel makeup please! I am hoping to freshen my look up and would love to appear very polished instead of my current just-rolled-out-of-bed look, but is Chanel the brand for that and is it worth the expense?

If yes, would love to hear about favourite products which you would highly recommend 🙏🏼

I like Chanel lipsticks.

Haven’t tried their other stuff.

hobbledyhoy · 04/01/2025 04:22

Used to use their foundation but found it oxidised quite quickly, disappointing given the price point.

Also used their hydration blusher (one with small pigment balls of colour) ok but don't think it lasts that long

Mascara, again ok but on me it seems to smudge though the effect on top lashes is nice.

All in all, the products I've tried haven't wowed me considering the price point and luxury marketing

sushibelt · 04/01/2025 05:24

Some of it is. Some of it isn't.

I would consider looking at:

Their newish cream blushes
An eyeshadow quad in a colour you like
Foundations: I get on REALLY well with most of these but ask at the counter for help with the shade and then wear it the rest of the day, some people have issues with oxidisation. I like les beiges healthy glow and their no.1. Foundations best for everyday.
Lipstick- nice to have but nothing special apart from their double ended long lasting one which is perfection.

Things to not bother with imo:
Setting powder
Powder Blush (used to be good but they've reformulated it and also the rest of the market have caught up)
Mascara
Single eyeshadows
Foundation: Les Beiges Water-Fresh Complexion Touch - I got through the bottle way too fast it's smaller than usual and doesn't have great coverage but isn't a big enough bottle for light coverage imo.

Speedweed · 04/01/2025 05:29

I wouldn't rush at chanel makeup. I find their nail polish chips, their mascara is smudgy and flakes, and their skin products are very orange.

In your situation op, it sounds as if you're trying to shortcut effort through purchasing. Save your money! Get a basic selection of cheaper makeup to start with, and make the effort to use it daily. Then add in more complex/expensive products as you work out what you like.

TwinklyRoseTurtle · 04/01/2025 06:50

I would recommend the Soleil universal bronze- it’s a cream bronzer put on with a brush gives a bit colour in the winter months, wouldn’t recommend the liquid highlighter x

buybuysellsell · 04/01/2025 07:04

@sushibelt I was going to recommend Les Beiges water fresh! It's the best foundation for my skin that I've ever used.

I love the Chanel packaging and some of the formulations but in general I don't think it pays to be overly loyal to one brand for all your make up.

I would also look at Armani for base/foundatjon, MAC for eyeshadow, Tom Ford for lips, Nars or Charlotte Tilbury for lots of stuff. Or just go into a big Space NK or decent department store and see what takes your fancy.

Birdsongsinging · 04/01/2025 07:05

It’s not cruelty free. So no not worth it.

getahhtmapub · 04/01/2025 07:07

I've come back to their foundations everytime having tried other brands. Sublimage and the Ultra La Teint Velvet. They are brilliant. As are their eyeliners and nail polish. Their serums and skin care are gorgeous to use.

Other stuff I've not tried

Purplecatshopaholic · 04/01/2025 07:15

Bit of a mixed bag. As with most brands some products will work for you better than others, depending on what you like, and your skin type. Sorry that doesn’t help! Only products I keep coming back to are their nail varnish and their lipsticks. Tend to prefer Dior or Charlotte Tilbury for most other things.

IamOliveOil · 04/01/2025 07:18

I use the VITALUMIÈRE AQUA foundation in 10 beige as I’m very fair but with a pinkish complexion amd it is perfect for me, I couldn’t go back to any foundation now. It gives great coverage without being cakey. Before applying I use HYDRA BEAUTY MICRO LIQUID ESSENCE keeps my face from drying out and foundation in place. I have also recently started using the bronzer again, it’s expensive but it lasts.

corianderpomander · 04/01/2025 07:20

I like their lipsticks. Their skin products used to 'roll' on the skin leaving film strings of product on your skin but maybe they've improved that. I find Chantecaille a far more luxury brand with gorgeous products. That said I was impressed by a Charlotte Tilbury eye set recently and expected that to not to for me. I would say spend time having several counter make overs before buying.

Rina66 · 04/01/2025 07:40

I use the Les Beiges bronzing cream in the summer applied with a kabuki style brush.

Phunkychicken · 04/01/2025 07:49

DD bought me the baume essentiel glow stick and it’s the best glow I’ve ever used. I’m 49 with reactive, dull skin and many shimmer products break me out into an itchy sore rash and this just makes me glow.

The lip glosses are great, but many of the other lip products I’m allergic to.

Mascara wasn’t great, really smudgy but was only grey one I could find.

Nail polish lovely colours but totally agree about chipping

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 04/01/2025 07:53

I really like their lipsticks. Not tried anything else.

I love the original but not the touch version with more coverage

BecuaseIWantItThatWay · 04/01/2025 19:05

Thank you everyone for your insights! So it seems that it's more that certain items make worthwhile purchases, as opposed to the brand as a whole.

Very grateful for all the suggestions of favourite products and those which you don't recommend!

My friend got their nail varnish and said it was unbelievable the difference the money made! Got a gift of their quad eyeshadow and was wow but got my make up done in a department store and their foundation (for dry skin!) was horrendously drying within an hour or so and I wanted to claw my skin off!! Would recommend Clarins instead or even try perfect match from rimmel (it’s a dupe for ysl!)

Pigeonqueen · 04/01/2025 19:18

I spent 20 years working for Chanel and then Clinique as a make up consultant. Even with the 65% discount I used to get I wouldn’t buy everything from them. Foundations and mascaras etc were very good across both brands but things like eyeshadows and lipsticks I’d just go for whatever colour I fancied at the time and it could often be a cheap brand. Quite often us make up counter staff would go for a cheap dupe from Rimmel or L’Oréal and even the area managers wouldn’t realise we weren’t wearing the brand. (We had specific strict instructions as to what products we had to wear).

AchillesAndPatroclus · 04/01/2025 19:25

I use the No.1 fond de tent revitalisant as it’s the first foundation I’ve found that matches my skin perfectly.

It’s nice and sheer, so buildable and very natural on me. I have dry skin that usually sucks up the moisture and leaves the dry pigment on my skin but this doesn’t do that.

HanSB · 04/01/2025 19:27

As above replies, I would go to Space NK and have a look at some of the brands they carry. The only thing I purchase from Chanel is lipstick. I have a lot of make-up from Hourglass, love their stick foundation and face palettes. Dim light blurs your skin and the blushes are very flattering.

soupfiend · 04/01/2025 19:30

I wont use any other lipstick

I feel the same. I've got three. Would rather have 2 Chanel ones than ten of another brand.

BeCalmNavyDreamer · 04/01/2025 19:39

I love their led beiges foundation. Find their nail varnish isn't worth the money.

I tend to Google and research products before I buy them as brands vary so much, I then pick and mix across brands.

Oh and Clinique Black Honey. That and my three Chanels are ample for my needs!

DuckTales1234 · 04/01/2025 19:40

Go for Charlotte Tilbury- 1000x better!
