Jelly cubes for nails

DustyLee123 · 01/01/2025 07:43

For the past couple of months I’ve been eating a jelly cube a day, in the hope it will help my nails and hair shedding, just like I used to do when I was a teen, and my nails are noticeably stronger.
Is there anything you do that’s an old fashioned thing that you find works?
I’m wanting to look for beer shampoo now. DM used to buy it in a sachet from the chemist.

I just had to Google it, it was Linco beer shampoo.

sort of thing my 11 year old DD would be inclined to try doing

Then she’ll have lovely strong nails.

There are a few beer shampoos on Amazon - not that one though but I do remember it!
I remember in the 80s you could buy sachets of shampoo and conditioner. These days everything is in huge plastic bottles.
I miss those Harmony colour rinses. Wash in wash out. I think they were about 40p a sachet.

well, only if you believe it works 😕

Not about nails, but I loved Anne French Deep Cleansing Milk, which has disappeared, alas.

Jolietta · 01/01/2025 09:16

Adeline rubbed in your nails for a week will see them strong but supple. Gently file once you see some length.

Toners and Shaders.

When I was Googling the Linco beer shampoo, a picture of Revlon Flex shampoo popped up too, along with a MN post from 2023 saying that it was available in Home Bargains. So I will be looking for that next time I’m in.
Yes @toenails , I used Anne French , or baby lotion when money was tight!
then I remembered those oil tubes you heated up to condition your hair.

My grandmother swore by a jelly cube a day and had a little mason jar on her counter full of chopped up jelly. It worked for her.

When I was a teenager I read in Jackie magazine thst if you splashed your breasts with cold water after a bath or shower it would help to keep them perky. I am in my 60s now and still doing it but I suspect it’s not working 😂

What's Adeline? Google not helping

I remember that tip too, probably from Just Seventeen in my case! I follow Michael Moseley's tip of finishing my morning shower with a blast of cold water (for various health benefits rather than perky breasts, but presumably that might be an additional advantage). My books are menopausal and massive but not really saggy, so maybe it is working!

I remember at school, we used to do supposedly breast-enhancing exercises while chanting "I must, I must, I must increase my bust". Even as a sixteen-year-old I knew that breasts were mostly fat so the exercises wouldn't have any direct effect, but I hoped that if the pectoral muscles underneath got bigger, my boobs would look larger.

Also interested to know what adeline is. The jelly thing definitely does work; i’m going to add some to my weekly shop again!

balletflats · 01/01/2025 09:46

Planks and downward facing dog yoga pose works to firm up a wobbly bust. I always notice when I manage to do a few weeks of consistent practice.

I also find the jelly works for my soft and splinter nails, but must confess to eating it with tinned fruit and Carnation milk. I had an 80s childhood.

FlowersOfSulphur · 01/01/2025 09:48

Did anyone else start each day with a glass of hot water with lemon juice? I think it was supposed to clarify the skin (but it wasn't good for the teeth, I later discovered).

I also did a lot of "body brushing" with a special brush, always in the direction of the heart. It was supposed to improve lymphatic circulation and break down cellulite.

And I remember sitting in the sun with baby oil on my legs to enhance my tan. Definitely not a beauty tip that I'd recommend now!

Randomontheinternet25 · 01/01/2025 09:56

@DustyLee123 flex shampoo & conditioner are £2.99 each in home bargains. Huge bottle for the price

LizzieLazzie · 01/01/2025 09:59

As a teen I followed ‘beauty’ advice - covered my hair in lightening spray and my body in olive oil then lay on sheets of kitchen foil on the grass in the hot summer of 1976 - literally cooked myself! Ended up with a deep golden tan which was the fashion then and much admired at the time, but dealing with the consequences of ruining m skin now. Jelly cubes do work in my experience - reminded me to buy some.

Ilovemyshed · 01/01/2025 10:06

@Wegovypictures Vaseline?

Ilovemyshed · 01/01/2025 10:08

Best thing I have found is a gummy multi vitamin.

Chocolately · 01/01/2025 10:12

I wear rubber gloves for the sake of my nails, they're quite hard now. I've started being kinder to my hair too, blotting rather than rubbing when wet, and smoothing leave in conditioner through before combing or brushing it. Don't use too hot a dryer on it either. Looking a bit more shiny. 👱

TroysMammy · 01/01/2025 10:22

@FlowersOfSulphur my friend and I also believed that if you wore a bigger bra then your boobs would grow into them 😂. Despite my friend having 3 children and I had none my boobs are now bigger than hers and I'm the one that looks matronly. Be careful what you wish for.

Jolietta · 01/01/2025 10:32

@Wegovypictures

Apologies!

Vaseline!

FinallyHere · 01/01/2025 10:33

My mother was called Adeline, Vaseline is what we rubbed into our nails.

Wegovypictures · 01/01/2025 10:38

That makes a lot more sense 😆
