I want to be a glossy 4x4 mum

glossystyle · 27/12/2024 20:48

I’ve got major envy for those glossy mums who always look effortlessly put-together, the ones who pull up in a gleaming 4x4, wearing an immaculate coat, perfect jeans, and trainers that somehow look fresh and stylish instead of like they’ve been through a muddy football field. Their hair always seems bouncy, their nails are pristine, and they make juggling kids and life look so chic. I know the reality underneath will be different to this perceived polish but I fantasise about gliding around like a glossy mum.

I’m determined to give my wardrobe and look a bit of an upgrade, but I can’t afford to throw money around. I’m obsessed with Vinted, and I’d love some advice on what kind of brands or key pieces I should be looking for to recreate this vibe. Think understated luxury, nothing that screams flashy, just timeless, polished style. I am 42 and would love to dress youthfully but established.

I also feel like there’s some secret to their beauty routines, always glowing skin, neat nails, and perfectly styled hair that looks natural but clearly isn’t. Is this the magic of a Dyson Airwrap and Charlotte Tilbury, or am I missing something?

Basically, how do I create this effortless gloss without bankrupting myself? And is there anyone else out there reinventing themselves via Vinted too? Would love any tips, tricks, or recommendations to help me nail the look! Thank youuuu.

I used to have a friend like this, for one thing she had a loaded husband but she used to also get up early to blow dry her hair and apply makeup and false eyelashes etc, and she'd be in bed late after doing her nightly skincare routine and fake tan and everything.
She used to stick her kids in the cot with toys or in front of a screen while she was doing all this stuff.
She also used to barely eat to stay slim. Even to the point of fainting a few times because her blood sugar was low.

So basically I could look better turned than I do but I choose to prioritise sleep, cooking actual meals instead of shoving ready meals in the oven, and spending time with my kids

SweetRain · 28/12/2024 14:39

And with fillers these days and access to cosmetic dentistry everyone has a good chin and jawline 🙄 a good bone structure used to be special.

MadmansLibrary · 28/12/2024 14:53

@NC543210 Thank you for the reply! I'm not keen on fillers but might indulge in a bit of Botox in a few years, at least until I win the lottery and can afford the works.

Chipsahoy · 28/12/2024 15:28

We have two 4x4. Both are always caked in mud. So I’m perhaps not the demographic you mean. No interest in what others think of me but I love fashion and looking nice so I put a lot of effort into how I look for that reason. I’d never go out with messy u washed hair. I wear makeup even if I’m not going out and I only wear leggings to walk the dog.
I wear a lot of good quality boots as we have a small holding. I wear decent coats although my dog walking one is need of replacing. I do my nails myself. I have long hair I blow dry or use a babyliss tool on. I wear mostly skirts or dresses or black jeans or blue black jeans, never light blue unless it’s summer.

Only for so long. As you age a good bone structure really acts as scaffolding

Strikeoutnow · 28/12/2024 15:39

And someone born beautiful and with a great bone structure always look better than someone who tries to purchase it. It lasts longer too.

Cleo Lacey is not the look I'm aspiring too. Think more of a blend of Kate Middleton and Rosie Huntington-Whitely. Are there any non celebrity influencers who are nailing this look I can research?

I was trying to post a link for you but can’t seem to make it work. I think Mademoislle spends on YouTube is what you are looking for. Specifically this video. She takes through what makes a casual outfit more elegant but still being effortless and comfortable.
PS she had curly hair and no lip fillers

She may have looked very glam @user2848502016 but did she have the natural, healthy, classy look?

Everyone? Don’t think so!

Henrythehappypig · 28/12/2024 00:56

Presumably because there’s a perception that they look like people with social status. My
DM used to point people out to me and say they looked like “head girl material”. This thread reminds me of that.

Yes! Did we all go to the same school?!

ApolloandDaphne · 28/12/2024 16:39

I have time, money and a 4x4. Sadly glossy has passed me by! I look muddy, windswept and plump.

It’s never too late!

Catshit · 28/12/2024 16:51

No bloody puffa coats with leggings

it’s so bad

MerryMaker · 28/12/2024 16:57

Puffa coats are brilliant. I love mine. So bloody warm and comfortable. I have a smart coat as well, but although it looks great, it is nowhere near as comfy to wear.

pennyHD · 28/12/2024 17:04

Naomi Genes is an influencer who I think epitomises the 'glossy mum look'. She is very rich though, her husband is a footballer.

She dresses very casually but expensively, and has shiny hair, glowy skin etc

Catshit · 28/12/2024 17:09

Yeah, I’m sure a puffer coat is comfortable, but it’s not very stylish

AhBiscuits · 28/12/2024 17:17

I would love to look more polished too.
I can make my hair like that, bouncy rich girl hair, but it literally takes me an hour, not something I can do before cycling to work at 7:30am.

Eating really well - no crap, but lovely nutritious food, is the secret to being skinny but also having good hair and nails. Louise Parker is a good place to start.

Certainly wasn’t the case when I was modelling!

@Strikeoutnow what age were you? I think at twenty you can get away with a lot, and still look good on a diet of cigarettes and coffee. But in my 40s, poor nutrition shows in the skin, hair and nails.

@narniabusiness thanks for that link. I remember that thread. Settling in for a re read.

I think smoking and drinking too much alcohol shows. I know people with crap diets who still look good, especially if they wear make up

Strikeoutnow · 28/12/2024 17:28

@Behindthethymes I was a teenager/early 20s but then went into magazines & buying so worked alongside lots of women, many older. The vast, vast majority of them particularly post 35 and dc maintained their thinness by hardly eating a thing & most smoked. I don’t think it’s easy for the average person to be skinny as they get older just by eating healthy. The correct weight? Yes but not skinny. I also think so much of skin & hair health is genetic.

Char65 · 28/12/2024 17:32

This is a subject very close to my heart as I was a glossy mum for many many year (but not a 4x4 one as never liked them - preferred the soft top Merc!) I guess I would have been like the blond ladies in @Pumpkincozynights post. I was a SHHM married to a rich guy who worked in the City so had a fair amount of time!! We had four kids who went to private went and event he headmistress used to comment on how well groomed I was! So here goes:

a good skincare routine that includes moisturising day and night and NO sun or loads of protection - sun is a killer - to keep your skin healthy and glowing.

opt for makeup that enhances your natural beauty. Neutral tones and subtle highlights can create a fresh, youthful look.

Choose hairstyles that are easy to maintain and suit your face shape. Embrace your natural hair colour or opt for flattering shades that complement your skin tone as some else has said highlighted hair needs constant attention – nothing worse that roots.

Exercise is crucial and of course diet. No smoking minimal alcohol, good healthy diet.

Moisturiser day and night facials

Well-manicured nails

Stylish clothes – nothing too tight fitting or tartish. Loose-fitting, flowing fabrics can be flattering and comfortable. Timeless items like well-tailored blazers, elegant dresses, and quality trousers

Heels always look good and stylish so high heeled shoes and boots are a must

Accessories like scarves, statement jewellery, and stylish handbags.
Nice expensive perfume

Layering with cardigans, jackets, and shawls to create depth and interest in your outfits.

Elegant coats and jackets – personally I’m not keen on puffer jackets.

I’m 60 now and still look good and I’m often taken to be 10 years younger. I enjoyed being a glossy mum and miss those days now the kids have more or less all flown the nest and I’m a glamorous gran! I know people say its shallow but I really used to love it it, going to the gym, having my hair and nails done and having beauty procedures every week. It was a lovely life and of course DH loved it too!

A lot of my things are designer and my favourite shop is My Theresa

  • manicured nails and toes are a must. I favour nude or french (Harriet Westmoreland for inspiration, just her nude or French manicures though)
  • hair that is in good condition. Use good quality hair care and regular hair cuts. look at the expensive blond or brunette hair colours and look to emulate this with your stylist.
  • skin care is key. Invest in a good routine using powerhouse ingredients such as vitamin c , retinol and actives.
  • facials are also important to maintaining good skin texture and tone which means less makeup.
  • no injectables with the exception of Botox.
  • radio frequency micro needling is my current must have treatment this gives a beautiful glow
  • always have your brows and lashes groomed
  • as mentioned above invest in permanent hair removal
  • neutral colours are best: creams, beiges and black are my preferred.
  • white shirts/blouses, blazers and trousers should be tailored to you
  • good quality coats are key to looking polished in autumn and winter
  • no scuffed or dirty shoes/trainers
  • heels are still in regardless of what MN says however it could be a block heel. My Chanel sling backs are a current favourite and look beautiful with trousers.
  • invest in a good quality heeled boots as these look great with skirts or trousers
  • cashmere is always luxurious
  • unfortunately it does help to be thin but thin doesn’t always equal stylish it’s about finding and tailoring clothes to your figure
  • invest in good quality accessories ie belts, bags and jewellery
  • remember wealth whispers so no hideous logos on clothes

They both always look chic, they are both wealthy but their style is easily imitated.

Good luck as you can see by this thread, everyone has their own interpretation of this style but essentially look on instagram for old money and this should be what you’re looking for.

Edited

Yes totally agree with all this.

@glossystyle I think your aspirations are good and your 'role models' of Kate M and Rosie H-W are great - they both have a timeless elegance. Also Queen Letizia of Spain. I think it is very worthwhile but is time consuming and requires dedication.
