Where are all the smart coats? ie. Not oversized and shapeless

I have my every day wool peacoat which is hip length and spot on. But I'd like a slightly longer 'smart' coat, maybe mid thigh but no longer than knee length. Everything seems to be an oversized car coat with zero shaping at the waist and although I'm in no way skinny, all these types just overwhelm my frame and I look like I'm dressing up in my dads overcoat! Whatever happened to a simple smart coat with just a little bit of shaping in at the waist? (That doesn't cost £100s)

It seems the same with a lot of things, likely because it is cheaper to slice a straight piece of fabric than cut some shape into it but I find it a lot with dresses and tops too, everything is just cut so baggy. Shoulder seams half way down your arms. Cannot seem to find anything neat anymore?
I'd like to find clothes that hold their 'shape' up on the hanger if that makes sense. I'm not even sure what terms to search for. But if you held an item up on the hanger you would still see it was 'waisted' in structure.

Can we be finished with oversized and get back to normal sized? AIBU? Anyone know where I can look for better cut items which don't cost too much?

I'd try Reiss in the sale. I bought a beautiful dark navy fitted coat a few years ago early in the new year and it's absolutely gorgeous. Cut beautifully, always looks smart, fuss free and great quality. Think I paid about £130 for it.
Kind of like this style, but not petite (I'm 5ft 10) with hidden buttons down the front: www.reiss.com/style/su351316/e27179#e27179

GrimDamnFanjo · 22/12/2024 12:07

Vinted. Loads of top labels going for a song, very often brand new and usually barely worn.
I find the coat then google for an idea of cut and sizing.

Hskatkat · 22/12/2024 12:19

Sosander? (Often sold a different prices across different websites Freemans Sainsbury's etc)

Justkoko · 22/12/2024 12:32

That reiss coat is lovely. If I could find something quite simple like that I'd be happy. Vinted can get overwhelming but I should have another look. I'm only 5'3" on a good day so length has to be just right.

Jaeger at M&S they have some smart wool coats that fit the bill. Around £300 but may find one cheaper in the sales. They are usually pure wool so very warm despite their lightness.
I bought on last year, actually bought it from eBay half price brand new with tabs. It is a beautiful coat and is just above the knee.

Angrymum22 · 22/12/2024 12:45

Several colours. The boyfriend coat. Looks big on a stick thin model, they are often flat chested. But on a real person with boobs they look less baggy.

Are you me?! I look like a child in oversized stuff. I bought and returned two Jaeger coats recently as they were too big and there was no smaller size to try. Modern sizing means I don't even know what size I am! 8/10 I guess and 5ft 1.
I ordered a size 6 coat from poetry and it's huge and makes me look like a bag lady ☹️

This was one which was just too big (lovely though!)

Hobbs city coats are lovely.

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/hobbs-cavendish-wool-coat/p112546992?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

Angrymum22 · 22/12/2024 12:52

Hobbs do something similar. As a brand they cater to the more petit woman.
I see these stems as investment pieces that will last for years so don’t mind paying a bit more for them.

Ponks · 22/12/2024 12:53

Hobbs also do a style very similar to the Reiss coat linked above

ParisPossum · 22/12/2024 13:46

Totally agree. Baggy, boxless, shapeless clothing seems to have been in fashion now for ages. Often when you see clothing on shop dummies it's pinned behind the back to cinch in the waist which seems to suggest that this is generally a more flattering look; I suspect it's cheaper to make shapeless clothing. I am just returning a Karen Millen coat from the sale that swamps me. It's way too long and also arrived screwed up and creased in a Boo Hoo Bag despite ordering off the KM website, not impressed for an Italian wool coat that cost over £400 full price. I agree with previous poster that coats are investment pieces; a good quality wool coat will last for ages so I am prepared to spend more. I have old Hobbs coats that still look fantastic; classic, fitted cuts that never date.

yesbutnobut · 22/12/2024 15:33

Hobbs have a great range of wool coats

HellofromJohnCraven · 22/12/2024 16:07

I got a perfect light grey Principles Petite coat on vinted for £16.

MyrtleStrumpet · 22/12/2024 17:22

I bought this in the Black Friday sale. Beautiful, soft, warm as it's 100% wool, fastens at top and mid with inside buttons. It is about £350.

It comes in camel as well.

Robin in Strike always seems to have some smart coats.

AndThereSheGoes · 22/12/2024 21:26

How smart? I find La Redoute do a good range across styles.

Theres this formal style grey coat

or this trad navy

stringbean · 22/12/2024 22:09

Hobbs Tilda. They do a petite version and often come up on eBay if you want second-hand.

But they do date. They come and go so worth hanging on to but 100% they look dated some seasons.

They are having a bit of a resurgence and I suspect next year they will be back full force but un recent years they have looked very unfashionable

Ohh lovely! I've just ordered this in camel (there were only two in my size left in the country). It's so well made and an investment piece. Tried it on weeks ago then missed out on Black Friday as I had flu.

FrostyMorn · 22/12/2024 23:08

I bought a John Lewis fitted wool coat, just above the knee, in a charity shop this weekend for a tenner in very good condition. Obviously my good luck but charity shops are worth a punt for these kinds of coats if you have the patience. So much better to be able to try on secondhand stuff rather than taking your chances with vinted, ebay etc.

EmeraldRoulette · 22/12/2024 23:37

Gorgeous coats. That said, I only see people in oversized or in duvet coats. I actually find I'm put off wearing my smart coat because of that.

I hate the oversized trend too. I think it's fine for people who are tall but doesn't work on a short arse like me. Really want it to go away.

recyclingisaPITA · 23/12/2024 04:21

If you don't mind wool blend or total polyester, Joe Browns have some in the sale for less than £100

I cannot wait for all this baggy stuff to just go. I spent the last year and a bit loosing over four stone. Now all I can buy is baggy clothing that makes me look huge again.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 23/12/2024 06:01

The Ted Baker Rose coat seems like it would work.
