Where are all the smart coats? ie. Not oversized and shapeless

I have my every day wool peacoat which is hip length and spot on. But I'd like a slightly longer 'smart' coat, maybe mid thigh but no longer than knee length. Everything seems to be an oversized car coat with zero shaping at the waist and although I'm in no way skinny, all these types just overwhelm my frame and I look like I'm dressing up in my dads overcoat! Whatever happened to a simple smart coat with just a little bit of shaping in at the waist? (That doesn't cost £100s)

It seems the same with a lot of things, likely because it is cheaper to slice a straight piece of fabric than cut some shape into it but I find it a lot with dresses and tops too, everything is just cut so baggy. Shoulder seams half way down your arms. Cannot seem to find anything neat anymore?
I'd like to find clothes that hold their 'shape' up on the hanger if that makes sense. I'm not even sure what terms to search for. But if you held an item up on the hanger you would still see it was 'waisted' in structure.

Can we be finished with oversized and get back to normal sized? AIBU? Anyone know where I can look for better cut items which don't cost too much?

I'd try Reiss in the sale. I bought a beautiful dark navy fitted coat a few years ago early in the new year and it's absolutely gorgeous. Cut beautifully, always looks smart, fuss free and great quality. Think I paid about £130 for it.
Kind of like this style, but not petite (I'm 5ft 10) with hidden buttons down the front: www.reiss.com/style/su351316/e27179#e27179

I have this exact coat in dark red, I love it.

Zara have nice coats at the moment. Not oversized.

Owly11 · 26/12/2024 09:41

Mango usually have a lot of tailored coats with a high wool content. Not as good as 100% wool, but if you are on a budget they are very good value and the high wool content provides good warmth.

i agree - i definitely need something more shaped/tailored and have found Vinted good for shapes that aren’t currently trendy!

I bought a lovely felt coat from white stuff about 5 yrs ago in one colour and always regretted not getting the other colour - found it on vinted and was so pleased. It is nicely nipped in at the waist.

white stuff always seemed to do a shaped coat every season so maybe start with their coats on vinted?

Jigsaw city coats are lovely

That reiss coat is lovely. If I could find something quite simple like that I'd be happy. Vinted can get overwhelming but I should have another look. I'm only 5'3" on a good day so length has to be just right.

OP I am 5 2/3. I have the Reiss Mia coat mentioned by a pp, several Hobbs Tilda coats and this year I bought the Hobbs Marissa one in green. Love them all.

Jigsaw, Reiss or Maxmara

ToeSucker · 04/01/2025 17:55

Honestly I shop on vinted so I get loads of lovely out of season things. I'm 5'3" and never have a problem finding trim waist coats

The key is search filters, and saving your searches. It learns what you like and there is a selected for you section which is like going to a personal store now 😀

I tried this one on in Hobbs today, it was lovely:

But then I actually ended up buying this one.
Yasmina Wool Blend Coat | Hobbs UK |
Yes, it is pricey, but it is a classic. It doesn't look much on the photos, but it is gorgeous wool fabric and very flattering. I'm not keen on a belted coat, so I totally surprised myself loving this one! I'm a size 12-14 (bought a 14)
and always think that a belt makes me look big, but this one really works for some reason. It is a bit more substantial than the other one, will definitely keep me warm on my travels to Sweden.

I like a fitted, tailored coat too. I look out for Hobbs and Reiss.

Hi I got a schoffal Hurlingham long coat for Christmas it’s beautiful and so warm, it’s padded with which seems like air bubbles, but it’s filled with down, 100% water proof and windproof resistant. Never had a coat like it. This is one coat I would highly recommend you won’t be disappointed. Expensive but worth it.

It's not because it's cheaper to cut a straight piece of fabric, it's a post-covid thing. People worked from home - and in some cases still do - and wearing caj comfy clothes became the norm. Formal, fitted styles have gone out the window. That said... how about this from White Stuff - in the sale for a bonus! https://www.whitestuff.com/p/4301/kamila-velvet-coat/DK_PLUM

Same here! I have narrow shoulders and a small frame so these massive coats swamp me, especially the long ones even though I'm average height. I bought two wool ones in the sale from Karen Millen to try and one from Monsoon and they are all too big, even in a 6, which seems ridiculous. Like the OP I looked like a child borrowing my dad's coat! Which is one look, but not the one I'm after. I looked at this on Etsy and others from the same seller but I wonder if it might arrive and look like a dressing gown or fancy dress.

House of Bruar do a range of stylish coats, they usually have a sale about now. Normally sized!

Nellynoo182 · 04/01/2025 20:39

I got 3 lovely coats as you describe in Warehouse sale

AdeptUser · 04/01/2025 20:42

house of bruar cheltenham coat

TheBookShelf · 04/01/2025 20:53

Another vote for House of Bruar, I've had a couple of lovely coats from them which look smart and have lasted well.

Fiflaboeuf · 05/01/2025 11:03

I have the Hobbs Mia and wear it way more than I thought: I still wear some oversized stuff (Lucy and yak trousers) but the nice proper smart coat softens the look a bit. Also great temperature control - think it’s the wool.

IslandBay · 05/01/2025 13:09

Totally go Vintage! So many amazing resellers on Instagram. Vintage are more likely to be 100% wool or cashmere and my coat is from the 90s. Dark charcoal grey, double breasted, long 100% wool and nips in slightly at the waist. I see so many vintage coats like this, I have to hold myself back from buying more.

I used to sell vintage clothes, mostly 90s minimalist and modern clothes just don’t cut it if you want fabric quality (or pay big money).

I'm the opposite! 5'6" and broad shouldered, but looking at these coats reminds me I had one very similar, which I loved, in my 20's. But looking at those, I fell in love with the red one and the black one. But I'm going to be putting my money aside and save up for something from Rain Sisters - I think they are lovely and very different from my usual choice of coat. I'd advise you to have a look on the Next website, they had some nice coats in the sale recently.

MaggieHM · 05/01/2025 16:32

There are some nice fitted coats around Next, John Leeis etc ive even seen a couple in larger M&S. They wouldn't be any use to someone that wants or needs to wear extra jumpers etc for walking or dog walking or for people who suffer from the cold. Also there's us fat people too. I hope you find something suitable. Puffers seem to be the in thing at the moment.
