Where are all the smart coats? ie. Not oversized and shapeless

I have my every day wool peacoat which is hip length and spot on. But I'd like a slightly longer 'smart' coat, maybe mid thigh but no longer than knee length. Everything seems to be an oversized car coat with zero shaping at the waist and although I'm in no way skinny, all these types just overwhelm my frame and I look like I'm dressing up in my dads overcoat! Whatever happened to a simple smart coat with just a little bit of shaping in at the waist? (That doesn't cost £100s)

It seems the same with a lot of things, likely because it is cheaper to slice a straight piece of fabric than cut some shape into it but I find it a lot with dresses and tops too, everything is just cut so baggy. Shoulder seams half way down your arms. Cannot seem to find anything neat anymore?
I'd like to find clothes that hold their 'shape' up on the hanger if that makes sense. I'm not even sure what terms to search for. But if you held an item up on the hanger you would still see it was 'waisted' in structure.

Can we be finished with oversized and get back to normal sized? AIBU? Anyone know where I can look for better cut items which don't cost too much?

Vinted. Loads of top labels going for a song, very often brand new and usually barely worn.
I find the coat then google for an idea of cut and sizing.

I agree with checking out Vinted. Have had all my recent coats and jackets from there .

I'm currently lusting after something from Rain Sisters - though as I sadly don't own one I can't speak to how good, or how warm, they actually are. They are very pretty though!

I bought one in the Black Friday Sale after lusting after them for ages! I can confirm that they are good quality, warm and just darn gorgeous! It hasn’t actually rained yet on a day I’ve been wearing it so can’t comment on whether it’s totally waterproof but it feels like it will be.

I did worry that it might be a bit “too much” but you know what, I feel great wearing it and whilst I would personally only wear it with a dress (which I live in for work anyway) it’s definitely an investment piece.

Oh that is great to know! Thank you!

I’d add that they are quite fitted. I ordered a Small originally (I’m a Size 10) and it was just a bit too snug around the waist so I arranged a Return to swap for a Medium which was a much more comfortable fit and they dealt with it very quickly.

I'd try Reiss in the sale. I bought a beautiful dark navy fitted coat a few years ago early in the new year and it's absolutely gorgeous. Cut beautifully, always looks smart, fuss free and great quality. Think I paid about £130 for it.
Kind of like this style, but not petite (I'm 5ft 10) with hidden buttons down the front: www.reiss.com/style/su351316/e27179#e27179

Edited

That is £338 for a pretty boring but serviceable coat.

I see someone upthread had a bad experience with them, but I really like Karen Millen for clothes with some shape and structure.

Got a beautiful camel wool coat from Vinted. Perfect.

Barney16 · 23/12/2024 20:28

I would say Reiss. Their clothes are cut quite small. Or Baukjen. I can never quite decide what I think about their clothes but they have some lovely coats.

Thumberline · 23/12/2024 20:34

Reiss is fab, I’m only 5ft 1 and got a lovely Reiss wool coat on vinted. If you filter brand and colours it shouldn’t be too overwhelming!

@Andtheworldwentwhite

I cannot wait for all this baggy stuff to just go. I spent the last year and a bit loosing over four stone. Now all I can buy is baggy clothing that makes me look huge again.
Well done you! That's a real achievement

But dint think you look large in oversized clothing. You won't. It's obvious who is slim in oversized clothes and who is large

KatieBBB · 23/12/2024 22:31

I have 3 x size 8 'smart coats' on Vinted & eBay. If they are of your liking of course. With ebay you don't have to pay a buyer protection fee.

Thomasina79 · 24/12/2024 02:06

I looked everywhere and finally settled on a marks wool Long pillar box red wool coat at around £100 more than I would usually spend, but I love it! I hate those puffy coats In my opinion they suit no one, but each to their own

amoreoamicizia · 24/12/2024 07:10

I have a slightly masculine look about me (or maybe more accurately "not feminine") and I look dreadful in oversized coats! I look like a man in them! Not ironically or something, just straight up "man" 😂

I think it's fine for people who are tall but doesn't work on a short arse like me.

I don't know, I'm relatively tall and I think it emphasizes our tallness and only petite women can carry them off, where they look cute and it emphasizes that they are smaller, if you see what I mean.

Floisme · 24/12/2024 08:11

I like oversized and I like fitted. I'm not loyal to either - it depends on my mood and what else I'm wearing.

If I wanted another fitted wool coat I'd probably look for second hand from somewhere old school like Walker Slater ( not necessarily them but somewhere similar), or I'd stalk them into the sales.

I'd also take a trip to a naice town with a decent country clothing store. Shops like that aren't trend led and I've seen 100% wool coats there at quite reasonable prices. (And while I was there, I'd check out the charity shops and dress agencies.)

I love the Holland Cooper coats. They are a bit spenny but so smart.Well worth a look if you want a timeless elegant coat.

Floisme · 24/12/2024 10:44

This is probably too long to meet the op's brief but I've drooled over it often (although never seen it for real). 100% wool.

Whistles costs are a good length I'm 5'2 and have the same issue.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 24/12/2024 10:59

There's a really nice tweed grey one in Uniqlo at the moment down to £50! The problem is that it's not very warm, more of an Autumn coat.

Rustyfeet · 25/12/2024 22:29

I love the look of rain sisters. But unfortunately way out of my budget!!
