Where are all the smart coats? ie. Not oversized and shapeless

I have my every day wool peacoat which is hip length and spot on. But I'd like a slightly longer 'smart' coat, maybe mid thigh but no longer than knee length. Everything seems to be an oversized car coat with zero shaping at the waist and although I'm in no way skinny, all these types just overwhelm my frame and I look like I'm dressing up in my dads overcoat! Whatever happened to a simple smart coat with just a little bit of shaping in at the waist? (That doesn't cost £100s)

It seems the same with a lot of things, likely because it is cheaper to slice a straight piece of fabric than cut some shape into it but I find it a lot with dresses and tops too, everything is just cut so baggy. Shoulder seams half way down your arms. Cannot seem to find anything neat anymore?
I'd like to find clothes that hold their 'shape' up on the hanger if that makes sense. I'm not even sure what terms to search for. But if you held an item up on the hanger you would still see it was 'waisted' in structure.

Can we be finished with oversized and get back to normal sized? AIBU? Anyone know where I can look for better cut items which don't cost too much?

What’s your budget? Welligogs do some lovely coats, this for example:

You’re so right. I’m a big girl losing weight slowly and as oversized everything seems to be the trend right now, it all makes me look like a sack of spuds.
I tend to stick to Joe Browns (available on their website, or Simply Be if you over a size 18) or Hell Bunny for my coats as they are fitted. You may pay a bit more or even get one in the sale, but they are such good quality and they last and last

Try Vinted! I just bought an immaculate French Connection belted wool coat for £45.

Hobbs Tilda. They do a petite version and often come up on eBay if you want second-hand.

Yes, I have the Tilda in dark green - I’m 5 feet 4. Check eBay - often on there.

Look for a good second-hand coat. 18 years ago my MIL gave me her simple wool (not cashmere) MaxMara. I wore it for 18 years and when I podged out, I gave it to my daughter who is wearing it non-stop. I kid you not, it looks new. The colour is black. When I podged out, I could not afford a new MaxMara and I bought a hew black Jaeger wool coat from Marks and Spencer - same story - unbelievable quality, so surprising. Same Jaeger wool coats are available on Ebay second-hand. Try a black one, you will not be disappointed.

Found some lovely high percentage wool coats on Vinted and went for it. Got a lovely wool Jaeger coat in mint condition for £20 and I'm so pleased. It looks like it'll last years and years. I'm so shocked at the high prices of things these days when they are often mostly polyester. I remember the days when I used to get silk items from Oasis for not outrageous prices. I miss that shop.

Sorry, but to me that coat pretty much exemplifies what the OP says she does not want. It looks almost completely straight up and down. Predictably, they've had the model stand in a silly way with one leg sticking out sideways and her arm shoving the side of the coat about, because if she wasn't standing like that it would look like a block.

Beautiful single breasted Hobbs one on the M&S site but sold out in all 3 colours bar one size 20 in brown. However..... you have completely missed the boat unless you are lucky enough to find one in the sale. My personal rule on clothes shopping is buy for winter in August/early September (for pick of boots, jumpers and coats) and for summer around now. Then you have all the choice

Karen Millen worth a look.

I got the Hobbs coat for £120 on Vinted, good as new.

I’ve just bought this brand new for £55 off their eBay outlet. It’s only wool mix-and I find a lot of Seasalt things not my style but I have some things I wear a lot like tank tops and Larissa shirts. I thought for the price it’s worth a punt and they take returns. I’m 5’3 and big coats swamp me.

Seasalt Women's Coat - navy Wood Cabin Coat - Petite - Catchcall Wade | eBay

Wood Cabin Wool-blend Coat. Composition: 50% Recycled Wool, 46% Recycled Polyester, 3% Acrylic, 1% Polyamide. A warm, wool-rich coat. The fabric subtly blends shades of colour for depth and texture in the design.
