What do you think of this ring? We have been looking for the perfect engagement ring and I don’t want him to spend a lot, 2k max, and we don’t want lab grown gems. I just can’t justify spending

I never got an engagement ring😁

goldencabbage · 16/12/2024 14:05

Lab grown is the future OP.

goldencabbage · 16/12/2024 14:05

And as you asked I really don't like the first ring. Prefer the 2nd but you don't seem wowed by it so I wouldn't get it

Thisismetooaswell · 16/12/2024 14:07

If you want more for your money go for second hand

shrinkingthiswinter · 16/12/2024 14:08

The second one is really nice!

But the people who are saying lab-grown or secondhand are more ethical choices are right too.

I agree in part. I agree mined diamonds don't all keep value hence my repeated references to size and quality of the stones as most mined diamonds are practically worthless (which many only discover when they try and sell their engagement ring post divorce).

I suppose I was trying to use fake v real as an analogy. I know chemical similarity though the difference is perceptible on anlysis due to imperfections in the mined and artifacts in the manufactured but I suspect in the future, the cost of production of synthetic or manufactured diamonds will tend to zero-ish hence the resale value for currently somewhat expensive though cheaper manufactured diamonds will trend to zero too.

Purely opinion on my part but I wouldn't pay significant sums for synthetic diamonds now. I also wouldn't pay significant sums for mined diamonds now, both for the ethics and because their prices will probably drop too except for exceptional stones (hence my continual references to size and quality).

Trying to explain by analogy again, fake Hermes Birkins and Kellys or Chanel flaps might become completely indistinguishable from the real but I suspect they wouldn't have the same second hand value, just that Hermes and Chanel will continue the arm's race of authenticity with most sophisticated labellign and tracking.

I appreciate your point that relatively few diamonds hold their worth.

If the imitators of Chanel and Hermes bags became their equals in quality, the question of who manufactured a great bag would be of no interest to me. I don’t like logos, anyway.

Today’s bags do have a quality differential, so I would expect that to be reflected in tomorrow’s prices.

I do love (certain) antique furniture with its patina and craftsmanship, however. The craftsmanship can be replicated but the patina cannot. Perhaps for me that is a better analogy

@poetryandwine I have quite a collection of vintage jewellery, I love tracking down great pieces and the workmanship is often high quality. I have one current brand I really like but buy at Bicester Village. It’s not high street and is design led. I have also bought a couple of pieces from a local maker. Not rings but I love her designs.

I have to say I would not buy lab grown diamonds but accept the scientific evaluation! I think pre owned ones can be more interesting in many ways. Retail prices are artificially high so buying used jewellery definitely makes sense to me.

I agree about the quality and value of vintage, @TizerorFizz. Sadly I had a bad relationship before meeting DH with a guy who favoured vintage and he somewhat curdled it for me in terms of actual wear. I do have a few nice pieces from family in a different taste to his, but mainly steer contemporary since then.

caringcarer · 16/12/2024 14:24

If that's your preference go for it. Only you had to love it. For me it doesn't look very practical for everyday wear. It would make a nice dress/occasional wear ring. I'd go for a diamond solitaire with all the value being in one large diamond. I'd think what sort of eternity ring would go with that ring and sit against it.

caringcarer · 16/12/2024 14:25

Louise123uk · 16/12/2024 10:05

I do still like it, and I did get the feeling but I’m just indecisive with virtually everything and like opinions. I always worry about making the wrong choice. Thanks for the comments 😊

We also tried on this one which I like but Ive been told could look more like a dress ring and is £600 more expensive

That one is far nicer and more classical. The other one will date.

@Louise123uk just out of interest why not lab grown diamonds?

It's a bit like having frozen turkey. Why when there are nice fresh ones around? Why a lab grown diamond when the whole point of owning a beautiful diamond is that it is rare. Labour grown ones are grown by the hundred and if I know it's easily obtainable and cheaper I don't want it.

But the conditions people work under to mine diamonds are horrific how do you happily wear it knowing this?

excelledyourself · 16/12/2024 14:40

Personally, I'd prefer something simpler, but with a coloured stone.

Trust your own instincts, not ours. If you don't love it, surely it's not the right one.

But diamonds aren't actually rare. That was just the lie we were spun so dealers could charge more. Tanzanite is 1000 times rarer but cheaper than diamonds.

It only matters if YOU like it OP.

Personally, the small diamond square around the main diamond and the tiny side ones, are just an attempt to make the main overall look, seem larger. I'd personally prefer a single diamond, or at least far less tiny ones down the sides and around the main diamond.

100% this. Plus, the small diamonds have minimal value on resale. Better to get one bigger size instead of halo. If in London, don't buy from the shops, go to Hatton Gardens.

GrumpyCowMummy · 16/12/2024 15:05

Who cares what everyone else thinks? It's up to you to like it- or at least not hate it- if you're planning on wearing it for the rest of your life. Personally I would hate wear that. It's too fussy, too cluttered and looks like a "QVC" special for £69.99. but I've seen Tiffany rings for £69k that I would say the same about. It's about your taste, your style and what makes you smile when you look at it.

What matters here is what YOU want!!

Suchavirgo · 16/12/2024 15:16

Ex jeweller here. I’ll be honest those rings are a nightmare for the smaller diamonds falling out. The claws on the settings usually get damaged easily or require a lot of maintenance- if you do want a ring in this style platinum is your best option. But truthfully I’d avoid!!

stripeyshutters · 16/12/2024 15:41

Golly gosh there's some dirty people here who never clean their rings it seems 😂😂😂

stripeyshutters · 16/12/2024 15:48

howshouldibehave · 16/12/2024 10:51

It looks rather like a Pandora ring to me-nice, but not what I would want from an engagement ring. I don’t like all the tiny pave bits of diamond-I would rather have a plain band and one single bigger stone. The split shaft might make it hard to pair with a wedding ring-do some trying on to check.

Who cares what strangers on the internet think though really-they don’t have to wear your ring.

The thing is though if someone has a budget of 2000 then they are not going to get a decent sized solitaire for that price. Rings like this can use tiny little diamond chips hence the price.,
