What do you think of this ring? We have been looking for the perfect engagement ring and I don’t want him to spend a lot, 2k max, and we don’t want lab grown gems. I just can’t justify spending

I don't like the setting.

For your budget, I prefer this style

What about vintage? Lots for under £2k here

I love it and I have similar and have had so many compliments. I would try with a certain wedding band or have one made to fit

WalterdelaMare · 16/12/2024 10:23

I’m not keen. Too fussy and will date. I’m not keen on the adding lots of tiny stones to bling it up. I’d rather get one decent diamond.

The second ring setting is too narrow for your fingers.

TheTreeLightsAreFuckingMeOffNow · 16/12/2024 10:25

Why don't you want lab grown rings? The diamond industry is horrific. I think you should do some research and look into lab grown diamonds.

Areyoureadyfor · 16/12/2024 10:25

It’s a beautiful cocktail ring. Will you really want to wear it everyday? It will catch on every thing and get grubby. You’ll end up wearing it infrequently.

I’ve been married 25+ years and wear my wedding ring and eternity ring every day. My engagement ring gets added to go out, as it’s too big for every day and I have some lovely cocktail rings to dress up. I recently got a new ring for a special birthday and chose another eternity ring so I could wear it everyday.

You may lead a different life to me though!

Zilla1 · 16/12/2024 10:25

The main issue is whether you will like this design for the decades you will hopefully wear it.

If you have been looking at high street jewellers, for this design the main drivers of the true value are the size and quality of the largest diamond together with the weight of the precious metal?

You'd want to understand these to understand if you are getting the best ring for your budget.

If you are buying retail, Ignore the fiction of any 'insurance valuation. Get a written description of the main and total diamonds which the retailer would be foolish to mis-describe and the weight of the metal then try and get a trade valuation from a trade jeweller in Hatton Garden or Birmingham's jewellery quarter and see if they have something you like of better value.

For context, engagement and wedding rings generally have the highest margins and make viable high street jewellers.

Saharafordessert · 16/12/2024 10:27

Totally your decision of course but I don’t think it’s practical for an everyday ring but if you’re happy only wearing it on special occasions it could work.
The second ring is lovely but the band is far to narrow for you, it’s not in proportion with your fingers.

TizerorFizz · 16/12/2024 10:32

@Louise123uk Carol Franks is in Bournemouth and she has these. Decent value in my view.

Yes, I wondered this. Lab-grown have identical properties to natural and obvs the difference in environmental and ethical impact is key.

I have a lab diamond tennis bracelet and it’s really gorgeous. I’d definitely go for lab-grown in future.

Polly47 · 16/12/2024 10:35

What matters is you like it, of course. But I'm going to take it that by coming online to ask complete strangers - what you want is brutal honest truth? Because otherwise you'd ask your people in real life and get nice/watered down feedback.

So brutal honest feedback - it's not for me. That is the type of ring that is going to date.

If you have £2k to put towards an engagement ring then put it towards one single quality diamond because that will hold its value better than a lot of tiny tiny little diamonds that are probably terrible quality. Or do a trilogy ring and if you can't find a nice trilogy ring at the price point look at trilogy rings with a non-diamond centre stone - like a sapphire.

That ring will catch every item of clothing. You'll ruin jumpers and dresses galore. It will be impossible to resize if you gain or lose weight at a future date. It will get dirt all trapped round it.

Ah! I've just come to 2nd page of the tread...

The second ring - I love it!! It's not typical. Nicer than the trilogy sapphire I was describing. It's a bit more unusual, not something you see, but it's still a classic. It's really beautiful. It's the type of ring I'd notice on someone.

Definitely number 2 ring for me. I love how the round sapphires and how the tiny diamonds around them just really set it off. It's so much classier than the first ring.

But!! Ultimately which ring speaks to your heart? Because we aren't wearing it. My own engagement ring isn't everyone's cup of tea but I love it and that's the main thing.

Illpickthatup · 16/12/2024 10:35

Not really my style. Not a fan of the super blingy rings. I think a nice solitaire is more classy and timeless.

Why don't you want a lab grown diamond? They're exactly the same, more ethical and you'll get a bigger stone for your money?

CissOff · 16/12/2024 10:36

You said this better than I could re the second one 😂

I have a similar engagement ring, I never wear it. It gets everything caught in it and gave me dermatitis from soap etc. getting stuck against my finger.

I no longer wear either my engagement ring or original wedding band, swapping them for a plain yellow band a few years back.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 16/12/2024 10:44

Bluntly, spending £2000 in a high street chain jeweller is a waste of money. The mark up on engagement rings is eye watering, and the stone quality is as low as they can get away with.

£2k is a healthy budget and if you buy second hand or go to a proper jeweller and choose a stone and a setting, you’ll get a lot more for your money.

@cantthinkofausernametoadd are you having a laugh? No one with half a brain cell is going to spend 5 grand buying a ring from a post on here 😂.

Sebsaloysius · 16/12/2024 10:45

This post makes me a bit sad. Choosing an engagement ring should be deeply personal to the two of you and surely the only thing that matters is that YOU love the one you choose, if you are both involved.

If you are seeking the approval of a bunch of us strangers on here, that tells me you're bothered about what others are going to think of the ring you choose. If you find a ring that you love, if it has 400 diamonds in it, or whether it's out of a Christmas cracker is irrelevant. If it makes you scream Yesssss! that's all that matters.

standardduck · 16/12/2024 10:48

That's such a personal choice and I don't think you should go by what a bunch of strangers think.

Saying that - if you are planning on wearing it everyday I would go for a single diamond or different cut. I think the one you shared will get caught up on clothing and dirty quite quickly.

Cannotorwillnot · 16/12/2024 10:50

No, I don’t like the first one. Too flashy. Looks like a dress ring, not an engagement ring. Not classy.

Second one I like better, but still not much. Together with your watch, it all looks Too Much. I’d prefer something plainer, quality rather than quantity.

Sorry but you did ask.

howshouldibehave · 16/12/2024 10:51

It looks rather like a Pandora ring to me-nice, but not what I would want from an engagement ring. I don’t like all the tiny pave bits of diamond-I would rather have a plain band and one single bigger stone. The split shaft might make it hard to pair with a wedding ring-do some trying on to check.

Who cares what strangers on the internet think though really-they don’t have to wear your ring.

calmandcollected101 · 16/12/2024 10:51

I think halo is a bit outdated now

But it's personal preference

Toddlerteaplease · 16/12/2024 10:51

To blingy for me. But if you like it, that's all that matters

HermioneWeasley · 16/12/2024 10:51

A few of my colleagues have that style of ring with the micro pave diamonds in the band and are forever paying £50 to have one replaced as it’s fallen out

agree with others saying go for a simple style and don’t buy from the high street as you’re getting poor value

Toddlerteaplease · 16/12/2024 10:52

The second one is lovely.

TrippTover · 16/12/2024 10:53

It’s gorgeous! Love it. Wouldn’t worry about wedding band fitting, you can easily get one made for a fraction of engagement ring cost.

Blueuggboots · 16/12/2024 10:53

It's not my style. As others have said, don't like a halo and don't like stones in bands.

But do YOU like it??

Blueuggboots · 16/12/2024 10:54

cantthinkofausernametoadd · 16/12/2024 01:30

I'm selling my 2.09ct solitaire ring- most recent insurance valuation £5k+ following divorce if you're interested. It's in white gold.

Insurance valuation is always twice what it should cost to replace. You can't expect to sell it at that price!!!
