Hair is an ageist issue

In this area there are two looks for ladies over about 50. Either long unstyled hair, or a graduated bob. The reason being, whatever you ask for, you get the bob. Last time I went, I did my research and downloaded a photo of what I wanted, booked the salon owner (rather expensively), and came out with - the bob. And actually the bob in question wasn't as good as the usual one from the trainee! So now I have the long unstyled (and unkempt) look, and it's driving me crazy. The dreaded bob is probably better, but all the older ladies here look like clones! Does anyone else find this?

I've had long and very short hair over the years but I always come back to the bob simply because it suits me best and I'm fortunate to have well behaved hair so it's easy to do myself. It's a chin length round bob (a bit like Anna Wintour but with a softer fringe) and my young hairdresser says she enjoys doing a shorter cut "for a change".

I've loved the cut ever since I first saw this Vidal Sassoon picture in my teens.

I'm 61 but there are pictures of me in my early 20s with pretty much the same cut. I even had similar in childhood!

God, you're gorgeous. It looked fantastic 😍

whiskeytangofox · 09/12/2024 13:25

I’ve always had my hair cut very short even as a child as it’s fine and has thin density. I’m 60 now and still like punky styles. 😂

Mine is white.

That's how I want mine once all my grey comes through - love it! :)

Well to my generation that's having sex, so now I'm clutching my pearls!

Would probably be cheaper than a haircut these days... 🙈

Find a better hairdresser.

I thought my hair was OK. Hairdresser moved away and I started going to a salon. I only notice the changes to my hair when I look at old photos. The change was very gradual but I now look so much better.

Don't put up with rubbish hairdressers. Break out, there are really great ones out there.

Start by asking anyone whose hair you admire where they go and how much effort they put in at home in their own, to make sure you get a good match for you.

You're galvanising me - next year I'm going to really seek out someone who 'gets' my hair... My old hairdresser expanded her salon and got sloppy and started bringing her barky dog in to work... 🙉 My current one tries to lead me to the basin before we've even discussed my hair and gives me the same style every time...

2025 Break Ouuuut!!!

I agree that from your mid 50s onwards, when you got to the hairdresser's it's a question of "what kind of bob do you want?"

I wonder if it's to do with the way your hair texture changes. I'm in my mid sixties and my hair has descended into bird's nest territory. I've tried everything, keratin treatments, K18 etc. In my youth I rather liked my wild mane but it's not a look I'd go for now. The only thing that works is straighteners, which of course just adds to the problem.

I never quite understand what my hairdresser is on about in the 'consultation' but it's along the lines of nothing too severe or interesting because my dry wavy hair can't handle it. I go along with it, as I have been doing for the past ten years, and therefore always end up with the same cut. Chin-length bob with centre parting, 'face framing' long layers and a couple of layers at the bottom. That soon grows out into that anonymous midlife mid-length hair of indeterminate style we all know and love!

I'm vaguely toying with this style, which looks amazing on this er twentysomething... but I fear would end up a weird, clumpy-fringe-on-a-pinhead on me....

Spot on thread OP
I have given up on using hairdressers ( I’ve run out of local ones even though there are loads ) as no matter what I ask for I get the same boring short cut as everyone else my age and tbh have done since my mid 40s.
Im sick of paying £60 for something I don’t want.

Last time I was in Guernsey I thought I’d get my hair cut there, thinking I might get what I wanted.
Whilst I didn’t exactly it was much nearer and a bit different.
Then I went out to dinner, in Guernsey and noticed just about every women my age ( ish) had the same cut.

Infuriating
Havent had it cut now since December 2019.

ps I’ve never had anyone mention a Bob but that’s because I always wanted a very short cut, graduated and styled

@whiskeytangofox id love a punky cut ( I don’t colour my hair though)
Just a good structured punky cut, it’s not much to ask
I never get it
I get boring
and yes I do dress punky so it’s not like I’m being judged on my clothes
maybe I need a large tattoo to be taken seriously 😒

Mine is white.

That’s exactly what mine is like now that I stopped getting it cut.
Ive never dyed it and was even quite grey when I got married in my early 30s.
I’m so much happier with it
Yours looks amazing !

Better to go with it I think!

I got my first greys at 16.

Gave up dyeing in my mid-30s.

Although there are posters on here that will tell you that grey hair makes you look old and bad.

Rejoineder time! Nothing wrong with looking older.

Old ≠ bad.

This is (in my opinion) a more flattering version of the style you posted.

I went to a hairdresser and asked for a “modern mullet” type style, She said “Oh, you want a Suzi Quatro”. It looks great, gets lots of compliments. (I’m 71.)

Feather cut waaaaay back in the 70s. 😁

Wonder what it looks like outside of the photo shoot though
After a long day at work and a trek around the supermarket.

Ha ha, yes! Or a walk on a windy day... Would properly end up rather like the original!

Ya. I agree.

Runskiyoga · 09/12/2024 18:54

Aagh I am contemplating cheating on my hairdresser because of this. I'm growing out my greys and I am not sure she will even agree to try a short cut on me. I have the pointy bob with the cut out bit at the back.

It's actually quite creepy when you see us all together, like the Children of the Damned!

Edited

I feel this may be my town. I'm the long unstyled version but in my core fitness class the short blonde bob thing is definitely a thing. Looks particularly awful when your head is upside down

Runskiyoga · 09/12/2024 18:57

I want to find a really young cool salon and show them a picture of my gender non conforming dd who has the same type of hair as me.

Yes - that model would look good with Donald Trump's hair...

My mother has been nagging me to get my hair cut short since I was a teenager... like hers, which is Judi Dench length and colour... But she has a tiny chin and dainty features, and I have a round, fleshy face and short neck like my Dad. I would look... like my Dad.

I did try it once when I was young. A man warned me I was going into the ladies' toilets... 😭
