What to wear with this skirt (hush Simone slinky) for a Christmas lunch/party?

I’ve recently bought this skirt with a view to wearing it to my office Christmas party, but nothing I’ve tried with it is quite right.

Hush skirt

i really like the skirt, it’s a bit different for me but it’s flattering on, and I’ve got a few different shoe options, I just can’t find the right top. In my head I want a lightweight slightly slouchy knit, in black with a touch of gold toned metallic shimmer, but i just can’t find anything. The wrong fit, too itchy, more of a silver sparkle… For regular day wear I’d wear it with a chunky black jumper and boots, but the Christmas party needs something a little dressier.

completely open to all suggestions, so I thought I’d throw it out to MN to see if any of you could suggest something I haven’t thought of. 🙏🏻

Thanks for posting @xmasdealhunter that top is lovely. High necks don’t always work well for me (sadly instead of helping conceal a slightly crinkly neck they can somehow emphasise mine) but it’s definitely worthy of consideration. I’ve never come across that brand before, and this is exactly one of the reasons I posted!

I should have mentioned budget, I’d go up to £100-£125 for the right top, though less would be a bonus…

The right metallic colour but maybe not the right style and more brown than black. Another idea - I saw someone wearing this H&M cardigan and it looked fab on, could you go with a black cardigan and add some different buttons?

I think something fitted would look nice with that skirt...what are your thoughts? I don't like how it's presented on the model at all.

What about something like this?

Do you have just a simple fitted black vest top?
I tried on loads of tops with sparklers today and all very very itchy.

I'd go for the black riley silk vest top from reiss. Wide enough straps to wear a bra, luxury material, can be worn again and again with other outfits. Then accessories wear tge top in plainer. Great coat per wear.

Annexlife · 07/12/2024 19:07

Oh lord, so many typos...then accessories where you have a plainer top. Great cost per wear.

Have you got this top? I can't understand the description - it says Silk Front (£85) but the composition's given as 92% silk, which would mean it's silk on the front and back. A reviewer says the back's polyester.

I get cross when supposedly trustworthy retailers lie about their wares!

~ You can get an actual silk vest - fine silk jersey, at that - from Patra for £45

I like the black silk vest idea, but over it for the warming up part I'd do a crew neck black cashmere sweater from Cos (they have lovely ones). Then black kind of shoe boots but with an open toe, and deep wine polish on nails and toes.

Annexlife · 07/12/2024 20:17

@garlicwest , I do have the top, front only is silk, which I actually prefer as it doesn't stick to you as much in the heat ( I also use these tops on holiday) and i also think it means the fit and drape works well. I like the thickness of the straps as it hides a bra and the scoop is generous on the neckline without being too revealing. Cost per wear has been great for me personally. But I get it if you want pure silk it won't be for you.

Hayley1256 · 07/12/2024 20:29

I'd wear something like one of these with it tucked into the skirt

Oh, lots of replies, thanks all.

I like silk vest idea, but I don’t love my arms in vests in the winter for some reason. But I am going for an emergency dash to Zara/JL/Reiss tomorrow so I will hopefully be able to check some of these out. I do have a velvet blazer that might work well with boots and a silky vest though.

i’m also hoping to try on a couple of silky/satin shirts - it might be a bit o/d on the satin, but saw someone in something similar the other day and thought that might work.

Annoyingly, I had a LOVELY black top that I was trying to get the perfect wide leg trousers to go with - couldn’t find trousers I liked that fitted well, so sent the top back as I have a new mantra that everything I buy has to go with at least 2 things, now I see nice trousers everywhere, but the top is sold out. And it would have been perfect for the party.

anyway, thanks all for taking the time to post, I will report back!
