Deep blackhead on DS's forehead. Ideas for removal

My DS is 14 and has started getting bumpy, slightly spotty skin as he's going through puberty. He had a raised bump on his forehead which has now fallen off but it's left a really deep black mark that I presume is a blackhead. He's a bit self conscious about it so I wondered if anyone had recommendations for skincare for teens that might help.
He currently uses Cerave blemish face wash that contains salicylic acid and niacinamide and applies salicylic acid lotion twice daily. This usually keeps his skin in good condition but not sure how long this will continue to work as his skin gets spottier with age.

Pore of Winer?

itsmylife7 · 27/11/2024 18:56

hot shower and pounce on that blackhead. use tissue on your fingernails to protect his skin.
gently squeeze it

helgel · 27/11/2024 18:57

That's a 5 second job!

Vatqueenquestion · 27/11/2024 18:57

Hard to tell from the photo. Could be a mole. Only a squeeze will tell. And get yourself to Sporners Corner.

Blackheads do not scar. They come away very cleanly.

Right. The poor soul is just home from rugby after school and I've taken a photo. It just looks like a black felt pen mark.

Looks like a mole?

Flippingflamingo · 27/11/2024 18:57

Are you sure it’s a blocked pore/blackhead?

I would be worried it’s more like a mole and want it checking to be honest. Especially if it came after a random scab. Some skin cancers can start as dark skin marks so it’s always worth checking if you are not sure.

I am a pharmacist (hospital ICU pharmacist albeit so definitely no expert in acne) and agree pharmacists are not that much help with acne products. I'm aware of the next steps my DS needs in terms of topical preps if his skin deteriorates as per NICE guidelines and will have no hesitation making sure he gets started on these if needed.
He's not back from school yet so I can't take a photo but I actually don't think it would show up that well in a photo anyway.
As far as I'm aware magnesium sulphate paste isn't recommended anymore and is probably discontinued.

What??? It's the only that works on splinters 😱

Foodie333 · 27/11/2024 18:59

Scrub, hot shower, if it’s popped up a bit, gentle pressure. Try not to make a mess of his face. Then hope the pore stays clear …. large pores stay large,
there is no truth to shrink it

padsi1975 · 27/11/2024 19:00

Ingrown hair maybe?

It really doesn't look like a mole. I'll definitely keep an eye on it though and give it a light stream to see if it shifts

Rubs thighs in anticipation

soupfiend · 27/11/2024 19:09

There is a lot of overcomplication of squeezing of boils and spots and blackheads, all this talk of steaming, this acid or that acid, this paste or that paste, tissues, flannels blah blah blah

Wasnt like that in my day, squeeze it!

Dodie66 · 27/11/2024 19:10

could be ingrown hair. I see he has other hairs on his forehead
my DH has something similar on his neck. I squeeze it from time to time and get gunge out of mit but it builds up,again

CucumberBagel · 27/11/2024 19:11

OP seems to be rejecting every sensible suggestion.

It looks like very much like a mole, despite OP's denial, probably developed from sun exposure when the open wound from the previous spot was exposed to the sun.

AnonAnom940 · 27/11/2024 19:11

Just squeeze it. Doesn't even look that big. It'll be fine.

He did not, no. I took him to GP, they looked at my son's face, they referred him to dermatology. He got prescribed roaccutane. He took it for a few months. His face cleared up. This would have been around mid 2000's. I was very grateful my son got sorted and had no acne scars visible

That's great. Glad your DS sorted.

In our area, the path seems to be antibiotics first. Not sure if anyone has experience of a course of antibiotics resolving acne? Or is it really just a holding measure until Accutane finally resolves it?

FagsMagsandBags · 27/11/2024 19:15

I'm such a weirdo, from your description I was thinking "Ooh, could be a dilated pore or winer!" and I was excited and hoping to see one. I'm now disappointed that it isn't and disappointed in myself for being such a freak. And yes, I have gone to watch a Dr Pimple Popper DPW video because I am disgusting.

Other hairs near it though.

LoafofSellotape · 27/11/2024 19:16

I'd have that out in 2 seconds flat, get on with it OP 🤣

autumn1610 · 27/11/2024 19:16

just squeeze it after a shower def don’t think it’s a mole and you would tell pretty quick if there was no movement when squeezing it

Thulpelly · 27/11/2024 19:19

I think it’s called a pore of winer - and you can go to a skin specialist to remove it. Otherwise likely to come back.

It is difficult to see from a photo but I am wondering if that actually is a blackhead. Sorry to say, for posters that have a go at people ringing for a GP appointment they don't think should, but if that was my child I'd ring for a GP appointment to look at that thing on my child
