90s glamour

I have a 90s themed party in January. For various reasons I want to look amazing and glamorous! Unfortunately my recollection of 90s fashion (I was born in 84 so was a teenager) is mostly pretty grungy and anything glamorous was a little ridiculous. My research seems to back this up.

can anyone think of anything ubiquitously 90s that may actually make me look good? It’s winter obviously but the party’s inside and I have a good coat.

I’m 5,9 and size 12. Good legs and décolletage - not keen on stomach. Fair with brown hair. I suit most blues and some pink and coral. Cannot wear red, green, yellow. Ok with black/white. I’ll try to add some photos wearing a dress.

it doesn’t have to be full on fancy dress - more a nod to the era but a recognisable one

Think ‘Friends’. I was in my 20s in the 90s and how Rachel dresses reminds me of my office dad- short a line skirts, opaque tights and shoe-boots. Evening things would maybe be bias cut dresses with shoe string straps. I remember wearing Carrie Bradshaw type things- heels were much more a thing than now. Heels with boot cut jeans and a strappy top?

greengreyblue · 19/11/2024 16:59

Also makeup was more natural, no big brows! Shimmery eyeshadows and glossy lips.

Comedycook · 19/11/2024 17:01

In the late 90s we used to wear a lot of boob tubes when we were going out...

OliviaRodrighost · 19/11/2024 17:01

Clare Danes’ Juliet? Simple white cotton dress and some angel wings. Half up hairdo. Or is that too costume-ish?

Liz Hurley safety pin dress?!

Namechangeobviously2024 · 19/11/2024 17:01

Trustmeiknowbetter on IG is great for 90s glam

OnlyFrench · 19/11/2024 17:02

Princess Di revenge dress was my style in the nineties. Same height and size as you.

Black heels, black sheer tights and black strapless dress. My DD wore mine to her prom!

greengreyblue · 19/11/2024 17:03

Strapless dresses and tops with jeans were big.

WhereAreWeNow · 19/11/2024 17:04

Agree with others about heels and strappy tops/tiny slip dresses. Liz Hurley safety pin dress is a good shout! Or Victoria Beckham in Posh Spice mini dress and heels?
I think it'll be the hair and make up that really make it.

Overtheatlantic · 19/11/2024 17:06

The little black dress with sheer black tights and high heels. Eye shadow and red lipstick.

XmasMarkets · 19/11/2024 17:09

My dream glam outfit in the late 90s was platform velvet heels, a satin brocade pencil skirt and marabou boob tube. Smoky eyes and Mac spice lip liner.

XmasMarkets · 19/11/2024 17:12

Slouched leather boots
Biker boots
Knee high boots
Chunky heels

XmasMarkets · 19/11/2024 17:12

Def smokey eyes and a dark lip. Or a neutral lip.

coxesorangepippin · 19/11/2024 17:17

Hugh's face on that picture 😆

He's like how the hell did I end up here

greengreyblue · 19/11/2024 17:18

Low rise jeans ugh! Muffin tops! 😜

Useyourfork · 19/11/2024 17:18

Short sleeve tight T shirt under a satin spaghetti strap dress shiny nude tights with platform heels.
Or 60s inspired mini skirt/ dress, over the knee socks platform heels.
Grunge look can be pretty.
either long A line skirt with a tight top
or baby doll style, over the knee socks (with Docs or similar)
Mix different textures like satin, fluffy fabrics, sheer fabric and lace.

FKAT · 19/11/2024 17:18

90s supermodels: slip dresses, bodycon dresses, big blow dried hair, thick brows, lipstick. Think Christie Turlington, Cindy C, Naomi, Helena Christensen, Elle MacPherson etc

Tarantino Heroines eg Uma Thurman in Pulp fiction / Patricia Arquette in True Romance

Clubbing / Rave era - I used to go to the Hacienda / paradise factory in Levi 501s and a wonderbra with a see through shirt / denim jacket. I wore neon pink crop top under a pair of Army surplus dungarees, dame Edna sunglasses and chinese slippers or a black cat suit with fila

God I miss the 90s.

CountryCob · 19/11/2024 17:25

Liz Hurley, Cindy Crawford....

It’s a band to start with and then a 90s house DJ later so I’m now thinking an outfit change may be in order

Vintage Laura Ashley cocktail dress aka as someone said earlier Princess Diana Revenge dress . Just be aware if you buy on Vinted / eBay a 1990 Laura Ashley dress size 12 looks like a todays 8 ( I still have mine in my wardrobe and cannot believe how small it looks ! )

sommerjade · 19/11/2024 17:38

I was at school / late teens / 21 at most in the 90s and went raving / clubbing from 93 on including uk garage clubs c97-99.

So I wore at night a mixture of minis & tight satin pencil skirts or bootcut trousers with heels / strappy tops / knee boots. Or a selection of small strappy white dresses - they showed up best under the strobes.
Jeans not a thing in most clubs until the 00s really.
Trainers only worn on women at actual raves.. iirc the music at raves was old school hardcore / techno / jungle until about '93 then happy hardcore / techno or jungle / drum n bass.

At least.. I only remember wearing heels to clubs which I would actually dance for hours in (how??).
If you went to a club over the top of your clothes was just a warm coat or smart jacket that you ditched in the cloakroom, if you wore one at all.
The label of choice for rich girls in my town was Moschino but most wore Morgan, Miss Selfridge, TopShop, Pilot.

Make up was black mascara, black eyeliner & lipstick.. we went through a phase of nudes and browns for lips and eyeshadows like now.
Brows were minimal. We would have been horrified at today's brows & lip fillers & big bums. Small bums and big boobs (via the Wonderbra if necessary were the fashion).

GHDs didn't exist although there were some crap straighteners; so hair was wavier & more natural. Perms & Sun In were out of fashion by '93.

People did mess about with glow sticks etc for a bit of fun in certain places but the cool girls wouldn't be seen dead with them and would not have worn the fluorescent 'rave' shit you see at '90s nights' now.
In our town there was a definite it crowd who lived nearer town and were richer and everyone wanted to be seen in the newer clubs and bars where the it crowd went, they would be lying if they said they didn't.
The sign you were one of them was drinking from your mini bottle of Moet clad in your white Moschino dress & Dior bag.
(Now I think how daft to care, but back then I was very young and insecure).

Were the 90s fun?? As fun as growing up can be. Luckily as the cliche goes, I don't have much evidence (no camera phones) although I was caught on a photo in the local newspaper in a club drunken mid snog once and my mum did laugh.

OuterSpaceCadet · 19/11/2024 17:42

You've made me pine for my Miss Selfridge spaghetti strapped long silver satin bias cut dress. Black eyeliner on the inside of the lashes and a dark lipstick that definitely didn't suit me.

I'd have no doubt unglammed it with some DMs or Nikes and a plaid shirt tho.

FKAT · 19/11/2024 17:45

I still have a black Kookai spaghetti strap body con dress with hooks and eyes all up the back, no room for any underwear. It's very Posh Spice.

My Morgan body con black micromini which saw a lot of clubbing in the 90s, was a maternity vest top 10 years later

Morgan still exists! I've just bought Morgan trousers.
