90s glamour

I have a 90s themed party in January. For various reasons I want to look amazing and glamorous! Unfortunately my recollection of 90s fashion (I was born in 84 so was a teenager) is mostly pretty grungy and anything glamorous was a little ridiculous. My research seems to back this up.

can anyone think of anything ubiquitously 90s that may actually make me look good? It’s winter obviously but the party’s inside and I have a good coat.

I’m 5,9 and size 12. Good legs and décolletage - not keen on stomach. Fair with brown hair. I suit most blues and some pink and coral. Cannot wear red, green, yellow. Ok with black/white. I’ll try to add some photos wearing a dress.

it doesn’t have to be full on fancy dress - more a nod to the era but a recognisable one

For going out clubbing in the 90s I had little black spaghetti strap body con dresses with strappy stiletto sandals, or a holograph fabric pencil skirt and black boob tube which was trimmed with a row of sequins and strappy stiletto sandals again. My feet were shredded at the end of every night out!

Ooh just remembered those Chinese Cheongsam dresses being popular too! Again, with the stiletto sandals 😆

Can you get a "Rachel" haircut or is that going too far?! That was my best hairstyle ever, bloody loved it.

Strappy dress with a feather boa?

Chinese dress and space buns.

I’d forgotten about feather boas! I still have a black spaghetti strap velvet maxi dress I used to wear with a boa and a cigarette holder.

Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy was the stylish woman of the mid to late 90s.

I saw a satin dress in Tescos a couple of weeks ago and it reminded me of a dress I bout when I was 19 (1994) loved it. Wish I could get away with wearing it now. It looked similar to this.

I remember buying one a couple of years later for NYE same style but a chiffon overlay with more of a cowl neck. Similar fit to Rachel and Phoebe’s bridesmaids dresses but mine was all black.

Cardigans with little fluffy collars. Lots of clips and jewels in your hair. Kitten heel mules and platforms. 60s floral prints. Henna tattoos!
Gwen Stefani was my absolute idol, she's great for inspiration. I revisted the whole 90s look a couple of years ago and got loads of stuff on Ebay. I'm still rocking that look some days. I got a gorgeous Monsoon vintage velvet dress which I'm wearing to a black tie Xmas party soon. Love it!

Natalie Imbruglia in the Torn video. I remember two friends cutting their hair and copying her clothes.

What about a copy of one of the iconic supermodel Versace dresses? Would need lots of catwalk makeup and a wig or rollers.

Madonna in the Vogue video (just squeezed into the 1990s).

It's got to be a slip dress, no underwear and space buns unfortunately I don't think it work quite as well at 48 as at 18

Look on urban outfitters. Loads of 90s style plus some original pieces!

InWithThePlums · 19/11/2024 19:08

Seems to be lots of black satin shift dresses worn in Frasier.

theriseandfallofFranklinSaint · 19/11/2024 22:08

What about combats with strappy vest for the band.

Then a tiny A line skirt with corset top for the evening.

Pretty much my standard outfits during the 90s!
