Dressing gown possibilities

Thinking of asking for a dressing gown for Christmas. My dilemma is: fleece is light and cosy but can look a bit scraggy quite quickly. Cotton towelling stays looking nice but is heavy and not very cosy. Please someone tell me I'm wrong (especially with recommendations).
I particularly like:

I have this one and love it. It's thick cotton, is extremely comfortable and imo warmer than the plastic (poly) ones which just make you sweat under them.

I also have this one. Well, two, actually. I saw it massively discounted last year, so I bought another, ready for when the first eventually wears out.

I practically live in it on weekends! The cotton is really silky soft and washes beautifully.

For deepest winter I have a towing dressing gown.

I find that all dressing gowns are skimpy and gap when you sit down, leaving your lap bare, so I'd advise getting one a couple of sizes larger than your actual dress size.

longtompot · 05/11/2024 23:55

This one is sold out, but it was recommended last Christmas on a similar thread and my dh bought it for me for Christmas. I absolutely love it, so if you can find one of the same sort of fabric, I really would recommend it.

I get too hot for towelling gowns, so this one is perfect. Plus it's a nice big size to wrap around really well.

Nina Organic Long Sleeve Dressing Gown in TEAL PRINT

Shop the Nina Organic Long Sleeve Dressing Gown in TEAL PRINT. When your dressing gown is this fancy, why would you ever get dressed? Good thing there’s a matching PJ set too.

I have a Pip Studio one, it's great. Loop towelling inside, velour outside, 2 big side pockets, big hood, good length so you don't expose yourself sitting down. It's heavy-ish but cosy. Good for a cuppa in the morning. A family member has one too and it's still looking great after 10 years.

I'm a fabric snob though, and would never buy a polyester fleece one.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 06/11/2024 05:03

I've got an M&S fleece dressing gown, had it for years and it looks new. Washes well, goes in the tumble dryer and is lovely and warm.

DilemmaDelilah · 06/11/2024 08:14

I have a stretchy velour dressing gown from Sainsbury's that is really comfortable. Not too heavy, warm, and comfortable because it is stretchy. I like it so much that I bought a very similar one, also from Sainsburys, the following year.

I know we're only meant to like cotton/bamboo/silk really expensive things on mumsnet - but I like what I like and I find a cotton/towelling dressing gown too heavy and it ruckles up around me when I'm on the sofa. Also I'm going through a second menopause and find that I suddenly need to fling off my dressing gown - much easier with something lighter weight and stretchy.

BigDahliaFan · 06/11/2024 08:20

I've got a British boxers one, it's lovely british-boxers.com/products/womens-brushed-cotton-dressing-gown-stornoway-herringbone

And an M&S hooded fleecy one for proper winter.

VitaminSubtle · 06/11/2024 08:24

I have this from Shibumi.

Expensive (it was a Christmas present), and possibly not what you’re looking for, OP, as it’s cashmere, not velour or fleece, but although it’s thin, it’s very warm, in my draughty house, reversible and very beautiful. I’ve worn it virtually daily for nearly three years, and it’s as good as new.

Reversible Dressing Gown in Eggshell

This pale green and apricot cashmere and silk dressing gown is perfect to wear to the beach, over a dress for a party, at the pool, after a bath or spend all weekend at home feeling cosy yet glamourous. These bath robes are fully reversible. Fits sizes...

I'd never buy a floor length dressing gown as they are dangerous on stairs.. Calf length is ok.

anythinginapinch · 06/11/2024 08:33

@sarsaparillatree I saw this and thought of you ... bit pricier than Bonmarche but otherwise what you described global.llbean.com/llb/shop/90069.html?page=undefined

anythinginapinch · 06/11/2024 08:41

@ParisGellerFTW wow thank you!! I've been on the same search as the OP and while you may not have ticked her box you absolutely did mine. Can't wait to be wrapped up in my elderberry one all winter hiding from the world

FarriersGirl · 06/11/2024 11:13

I have the Hushing one from Seasalt and I love it! Feels really luxurious so I am hopeful it will wash well.🙏

mongoliandoll · 06/11/2024 11:41

I have an Oodie dressing gown, washed many times and still looking as new.
They are HUGE though. I got a small and a friend stitched a button near the neck and at the waist to stop it flopping open (the fleece is quite smooth/slippery I suppose).

I do love it. It's cuffed which is great for actually doing stuff while you're wearing it.

We have bought loads of the British Boxers flannel / brushed cotton. Very light but so warm, looks smart, nice and long for tall people. Really recommend.

Thanks: love the pale greys/ tweed/ herringbone ones. So smart and understated. On my list!

I am the same, I have some lovely towelling robes for after bathing, but I prefer a fleece one for general wear.

OP I've got a Seasalt Hushing gown. It's nice and very soft, not as thick as some, which is good as it's not bulky and can look almost elegant. I don't wear it that much because it's kimono-style and I like a thick shawl collar to keep my neck warm!

My favourite, most cuddly, warm robe is this one, but it is silly money, really. I got it on a discount.

For my 50th birthday, I have been planning to receive a cashmere robe!. now THAT is silly money. But I fully expect it to last the rest of my life and I can't wait!!! (now to find the perfect one - I fell in love with the White Company full length cashmere robes years ago, but they haven't done full length ones since then and that's the hill I'll die on - anything above mid calf just makes me cold as I swish around with my legs on show).

I do have a fleecey one from M&S that DH bought me about 5 years ago and it has been surprisingly great.

ParisGellerFTW · 06/11/2024 13:08

I do sometimes browse the Web for cashmere dressing gowns, just to drool over them. I'd be scared of spilling something on it or doing what I did years ago to a beautiful new cashmere cardi - first time I wore it I brushed past a sharp thing on a wall and ripped a huge hole in it 😬

Normaja · 06/11/2024 13:28

I've got this one from Next. So soft and snuggly but it's not too thick and heavy like towelling ones are and it hasn't gone scraggy. I love mine.

😢

That's why I think I'll definitely go for a darker colour! I'll definitely be dripping tea and coffee down it at some point! Grin I love the idea of swishing around in something that's labelled "oatmeal" or "alabaster" or "champagne" in colour. But I know myself. I need Navy. Or Dark Brown.

Have you seen the Shibumi dressing gowns? Reversible cashmere. Gorgeous.

We watched The Night Manager the other week and I was admiring the Worst Man in the World's magnificent silk dressing gown. I managed to find it.

The bad news is that it costs £1300. The even worse news is that I or a flunky would probably have to steam it every day to keep it looking pristine. But one day I'll have a sewing machine and I'll make myself something beautiful.

@pattihews I think I have looked at those, yes, and they look gorgeous. BUT... I really want pure cashmere. I want that cosiness. I have about a million silk scarves and love every single one of them, and they are warmer than you'd think, but for the purposes of this robe, I want the fluffy cosiness.

So if money was no object, perhaps one of those and a traditional one!!?

MrSeptember · 06/11/2024 14:00

Having said that, I've just saved the link. I really do love the idea of a pattern. I've got a few years to go... plenty of time to agonise! Grin

I have seen them, but what the heck, since you linked, I'll go and have another drool 😍
