I just saw the Justine Picardie, biographer of Chanel and Catherine Dior, is writing a book called Fashioning the Crown. She had recently mentioned trips to the archives in Windsor. I guess it will be published next year.

Something to look forward to! Maybe a Royal Style read-a-long would be in order?

Yes to a RS&B read-along! This sounds great.

Papergirl1968 · 03/11/2024 19:03

Whatever the rights or wrongs, it must have been frightening for Felipe and Leti, having mud and objects like drinks cans thrown at them. The guy with the bloodied face behind Leti is security apparently. I believe the Prime Minister’s car was smashed up too.
Mary and Princess Josephine attended the Hubertus Hunt, an annual cross country horse race.

Felipe was being rightly harried by the Valencian people. I was talking to a Spanish friend yesterday who was livid about the poor response by the local and national government and the King's all talk and no action (in his words)

I’m Spanish.
The King sent his personal guard (Guardia Real) ahead of the military as it is the only thing he could do on his own. In fact Sanchez only sent the military after the King had sent the Guardia Real.
The angry mob shouted against the two politicians, Pedro Sanchez and the president of Valencia, not against the king and queen. But I guess reporting it as if against the king is more colourful.
Btw, I’m originally from the Valencia area although my hometown is more or less fine (this time) and friends and family too.

Mencia · 03/11/2024 20:26

Btw, Pedro Sanchez has run away from the people. The King stayed and talked to everybody. The King wanted to continue the visit, heading to Chiva, but Moncloa (the government, Pedro Sanchez) has not allowed him to as it would not have looked good for Pedro.

Thank you for that information, @Mencia .
I'm glad you're in an area which is safe.

Am pleased your family and friends are safe @Mencia. If you have time could you give a brief synopsis of this video with Letitzia and Felipe. She looks very uncomfortable but barely says a word - the comments say the lady in yellow is very articulate so presumably the Queen is stuck because she cannot be seen to agree with whatever she is saying about the Govt but she doesn't want to argue for the Govt. The caption to the video is something about saying everything by saying nothing. What is the lady in yellow saying to Letitzia? And the man off camera?

Sorry, it’s too long and too noisy, everybody talking at the same time.
The lady in yellow tells Letizia it is not against them but today was not the day for them to visit. Someone else is saying that the arrival of this official entourage has meant some rescue resources are late (in the sense that they’re kind of occupying space). Someone else says the government needs to go now.
This is being misreported all over the world and even in Spanish media as the government is trying to portray the King as a joint target of the ire of the people. The fact is that Pedro Sanchez has used the King once again as a shield (it is not the first time) but this time it did not work. He ended running away like a rat.
It is a very complex game the government has been playing to avoid being hit by this but reality prevails.

gingercat02 · 04/11/2024 07:39

That's interesting. The Spanish people I know are Valenciana, that's where my parents lived. At best, they are ambivalent about the King, so that will squew any options I get.

Harassedevictee · 04/11/2024 09:48

It’s always difficult for royal families, they don’t want to hamper rescue efforts but they don’t want to seem not to care. It’s such a difficult balance.

My heart goes out to everyone in Spain who has been affected by the floods.

KillingMeDeftIy · 04/11/2024 10:01

Credit to Felipe and Letizia for not running away and actually engaging with the crowd.

justasking111 · 04/11/2024 13:22

Read today that Sanchez barred them from leaving the country for months once. He really loathes what they stand for. Yet he fled when the mud was thrown. Felipe also sent in the palace guards to help with clean up a day before Sanchez did.

I don't think Sanchez realises that prime ministers come and go whereas royalty are in it forever.

I'm glad that here successive governments steer well clear.

KillingMeDeftIy · 04/11/2024 14:38

Blimey, where did you read that?

Daisy is slowly getting better - she is well enough to attend an event this evening, her first official assignment since the fall, presenting an award at Christiansborg Palace. No photos yet.
