Thank you for the Lady Glenconnor article @PoppySeedBagelRedux

Her husband was really punching (in both meanings of the word)
Horrible man.
She looked so lovely on her wedding day. He not so much.
The photo with her father on her wedding day - her dress was truly beautiful.
She didn't know what lay ahead.
She embodies the
Keep Calm and Carry On
mantra.

Thank you too @Maireas for the new thread. I lost you all for a week. Smile

KillingMeDeftIy · 02/11/2024 09:51

I also think she embodies how monstrous the KCACO mantra can be. She put up with an abusive husband for years because that's what was expected of her. Had she left him she would've had very little support as it was not the done thing. How many more women did the same, to the detriment of their physical and mental health?

deeahgwitch · 02/11/2024 09:53

Love her quote "...once you start thinking "I can't be bothered" .... that's the thin end of the wedge. You've got to come out and crack on"

I'm sure most some of the Royal ladies we comment on, on these threads have days where they just have to "crack on".
As do we all but not in full view of the public, photographers etc.

smilesy · 02/11/2024 09:53

I really like the style of the jacket and skirt on Sophie but I think the jacket in black looks a bit “top heavy” with the patterned skirt. Maybe a jacket picking out the colour of the flowers in the skirt would have worked better

Absolutely. When I was growing up, that was the attitude. You put up with it, divorce was shameful . It cut across the class divide.

Having read her account of her truly hideous wedding night and honeymoon (he took her to a brothel in Paris) it makes me sad to see how young and lovely she was on her wedding day.

I think Queen Mary really doesn't care any more. She's cracking on beautifully.

OH my 🌟 🌟 😍

Eaumyword · 02/11/2024 13:08

Be still my beating heart!💖
Countypup is absolutely gorgeous and rather stylish too! I just want to give kisses and cuddles to that little face!
Interesting about Lady Glenconner. Read her book and she had a heck of a life. Much of it unbearably sad but she seemed quite accepting. Like pp say, it's what you did in those days 🥺 Far fewer choices than we generally can have now.

It must be somewhat of a relief for Lady Glenconner to not have to hide it now, iyswim.

Maireas · 02/11/2024 13:59

I saw her on a chat show, she said people's reaction told her that she was right to tell her story. It's very distressing in parts.

There were rumours about Diana's father, Earl Spencer and her mother.
She too was so young when she married.
She was only 18 to his 30.
She left but despite trying, she lost custody of the children.
She was really up against the establishment.
She was painted as a woman who left her children for a man.
I don't think that was a fair portrayal of the situation.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 02/11/2024 16:40

Diana’s mother’s mother gave evidence against her in the divorce proceedings IIRC.

Eaumyword · 02/11/2024 17:07

Sadly the importance attached to a title (Earldom/Dukedom etc) always took precedence over taking care of individuals.

Mary on her way back from Oz.

I just saw the Justine Picardie, biographer of Chanel and Catherine Dior, is writing a book called Fashioning the Crown. She had recently mentioned trips to the archives in Windsor. I guess it will be published next year.

Something to look forward to! Maybe a Royal Style read-a-long would be in order?

justasking111 · 03/11/2024 13:56

I've just watched a Sarah video on Instagram. Backstage walking in her slippers. Then abracadabra in front of the audience she donned her car to bar shoes. A woman after my own heart. I couldn't stop giggling.

justasking111 · 03/11/2024 18:34

On Instagram I've been watching videos put up by Europe monarchies of Felipe and Leti visiting Valencia. It's heartbreaking.

gingercat02 · 03/11/2024 18:37

Felipe was being rightly harried by the Valencian people. I was talking to a Spanish friend yesterday who was livid about the poor response by the local and national government and the King's all talk and no action (in his words)

Maireas · 03/11/2024 18:38

What a disaster in Spain - it's of Biblical proportions, isn't it? I'm glad Felipe and Leti are meeting those involved.

Goodness. It does sound like a poor response. At best, badly coordinated and too slow..

So am I. They must feel torn. Constitutionally they're not allowed to do much. That's the presidents job and he's making a poor fist of it according to the Spanish.

Having said that when our area had biblical floods. Things progressed slowly because you can't magic away the water, rubble, fix the roads, clear the drains, stop the flooding rivers. With the wave of a magic wand.
