I know it's early!!!!!! But I've been invited to quite a fancy Xmas event and I always just feel like I look a bit basic....so planning ahead.

I'm quite petite, about 5'1 in height and kind of an inverted triangular shape. Generally slim

Perhaps we could all join in, @toffeedonut?

Here are some Batsheva dresses I have my eye on and may well choose to wear to coming Christmas events.

Just no 😂😂

I'm so fed up of this " would only look good on a willowy, size 6, 5'10", 17 year old" mentality applied to everything which isn't mainstream Hobbs/Mint Velvet/ M&S.

Yes Batsheva does some completely bonkers stuff. They also do lots of interesting, wearable clothes which can be worn by anyone.

I think they have made the models look disgusting. Clothes should flatter you. When they are as ugly as these clothes the only possible way to admire them is as an interesting standalone piece and that can be sort of achieved if you look at them on a hanger or a human being who resembles one.

ANagsHead · 17/10/2024 13:54

This from Batsheva - with or without underpinnings:

Pink

Green

Sorry but that is horrible

toffeedonut · 19/10/2024 12:48

Sorry for the distractions on your thread OP. But I'm still chuckling over the BATSHEVA recommendations. They also do chairs. This one looks alive!

@bevelino Hahaha. I'm honestly so confused by this dress. I've sent the link to so many people asking if they understand it. Everyone's been equally confused.

I wouldn't say I'm particularly boring when it comes to fashion, and have quite a few statement pieces. But I don't get it?!

I think she's taking the mickey out of your inverted triangle description? Hopefully? Is the brand a wordplay on batshit?

@ANagsHead ummmmmmmmmmm maybe I'm just not very sophisticated but I don't understand this dress

🤣🤣

Is that question supposed to be a joke? Or do you really not know Batsheva (Bathsheba) is a Jewish girl's name?

The designer behind the brand is Batsheva Hay.

ANagsHead · 19/10/2024 15:57

I must say I’m full of awe at how much she’s achieved in such a short time - CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalist just two years after she started her business ($150,000 award) is pretty spectacular. This interview is from 2018:

Also impressed that I managed to accidentally pick out something from the Spring 2025 collection to recommend for Christmas wear. It definitely makes sense to me in this photo from the show:

@ANagsHead I imagine the fact her husband is a fashion photographer potentially helped, no..? It all makes sense now, as I don't really want a wardrobe inspired by Hasidic Jews, or Victorian and prairie sensibilities, so it's unsurprising I dislike her clothes.

As an aside, I'm pretty sure the posters constantly championing Batsheva would have been very derisive about prairie sensibilities when they were sold in Monsoon. Other designers are available guys, let's broaden our minds a bit...

Tinyscotch · 19/10/2024 16:33

That's nice.

Still think the clothes are hilariously shitty 😂

Well you'd assume wrong. I have this dress in a different print and a denim Monsoon prairie dress. (and 2 ancient ankle length button through floral Monsoon dresses, which no longer fit but I love too much to get rid of)
Batsheva Laura Ashley

This isn't the Monsoon one but for an everyday dress at a good price, this is excellent.

Monsoon Denim dress

As for "broaden our minds a bit...", well yes, there are other brands available besides Mint Velvet.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 19/10/2024 16:37

Batsheva or Batshita?! Sorry, couldn’t help myself!

You might want to try harder- making fun of someone's name is never a good look.

Tattletail · 19/10/2024 16:42

Would you hire a dress? I've just recently hired a dress from Hirestreet. They have some lovey evening dresses that are a bit more expensive and "fancy". The cost to hire is quite cheap though.

IlooklikeNigella · 19/10/2024 17:19

It's an interesting article and shows a perspective that makes me want to find something to like in the clothes... Then I have a look and realise can't because they are plain ugly, seriously revolting.

I'm glad @IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle and @ANagsHead have found each other and they can feel mutually superior that the rest of us don't understand style. I'm so basic I believe in actually dressing to celebrate a woman's form.

india65 · 19/10/2024 19:27

BustyLaRoux · 19/10/2024 19:30

Well the hideous offerings from Batsheva have really cheered me up!

Neither of us have said anything about being superior. Why do you feel so threatened by posts of dresses you don't like?

Julianne65 · 19/10/2024 22:10

This has turned into a really weird thread. Will the OP ever come back? Has she found her dress? Is It from that weird shop those two people are oddly devoted to? I really want to know.
