I know it's early!!!!!! But I've been invited to quite a fancy Xmas event and I always just feel like I look a bit basic....so planning ahead.

I'm quite petite, about 5'1 in height and kind of an inverted triangular shape. Generally slim

Batsheva or Batshita?! Sorry, couldn’t help myself!

OP, don’t have any specific suggestions for you, but what I would say is if you’re having a full on 3 course sit down dinner, a dress that is entirely sequinned is really uncomfortable.

ANagsHead · 18/10/2024 09:21

Look at all the other dresses; your suggestion is way left field,

Grin How is that a bad thing??

Do you seriously think turning up at possibly a black tie/fancy do in that would make you the best dressed?

Well, I’m blessed with the ability to choose - so I wouldn’t have worn it to any of the countless formal dinners I was required to attend as a pupil barrister. Nor would I wear it now to a sober college dinner at Oxford or Cambridge. (I’m connected to both and enjoy dressing for stately college events.) But it’s absolutely the sort of thing I’d expect to see at any Christmas party held by the artistic / academic institutions I’m involved with. And not just by the young.

Sorry not sorry if that upsets you!

What a load of old wank. And snobbish wank at that.

OP the silver Mint Velvet dress is very wow.

TK Maxx have a party dress section for anyone wanting to save a bit of cash...

all over sequins are five, with the right under garments. Those Spanx knee length affairs are great.

I’m an inverted triangle too OP, and I bloody hate my wide shoulders. I find a deep v is best to narrow me a bit. I just got this dress for Xmas parties and it’s really lovely and flattering on. If you’re 5’1” it will sit a couple of inches above your knee I think.

dlsb.co.uk/products/so-sensational-pink-blue-sequin-long-sleeve-mini-dress?_pos=5&_sid=4778ccdc5&_ss=r

It's not just the length, it's the overall fit. The model for this dress is 5'9" and the waist sits about 1" above her natural waist. The waist on OP would be about 3" too low, meaning the bodice would be puffy around her middle.

Btw, I love my inverted-triangle shape (except when buying trousers)! I play it up with shoulder details, pleated bodices, etc. Agree about V-necks; square necks even better imo.

I wore something very similar to this in a different colour at a Christmas party last year. Really comfy and didn’t swamp
me like so many dresses do (I’m 5ft 4):

@OrchardBlack
Us lowly peasants don't know what one wears to stately events.

One of the things I used to love about the site was that they showed the clothes on a wider range of models than most places. They do it much less now, but from observation their clothes tend to look even better on older models and larger bodies.

Here: (I should have bought shares first, though!)

I'm so fed up of this " would only look good on a willowy, size 6, 5'10", 17 year old" mentality applied to everything which isn't mainstream Hobbs/Mint Velvet/ M&S.

Yes Batsheva does some completely bonkers stuff. They also do lots of interesting, wearable clothes which can be worn by anyone.

ToBePerfectlyHonest · 18/10/2024 12:39

Each to their own but I'd choose most of Batsheva over that.

Didn’t think dresses like this still got made tbf

Agreed. It's awful

I sort of think I quite like it actually but no way for an evening do. I'd wear it to lunch in a nice city restaurant

Me too . Anything described as timeless and classy also goes into room 101.

kindertoPTS · 19/10/2024 06:48

I love the green Karen millen dress with over sized bows. Sadly I am not going to any Christmas parties to be able to wear it! Considering being very overdressed for family Christmas lunch in it..., 😂

MaxTalk · 19/10/2024 07:33

Firestace · 18/10/2024 08:59

It doesn't work imo with the denim shirt, but clicking into the links I think it's lovely- admittedly not for the price, but looks like a whole different dress when worn as intended!

M&S have a petite range of partywear- lots of sparkles! I've been really impressed with their clothes lately.

The green one is fantastic. Not sure people will be taken you seriously of course but heck, it's Christmas... :)

It really is. Bad colour, fabric and style. The sleeves would also swamp a petite person.

Please don't wear this OP😆

CinnamonJellyBeans · 19/10/2024 11:29

The Batsheva dress deserves all the hilarious criticism it's getting and I don't believe anyone would wear that dress to any of the occasions mentioned as suitable.

I'm also not understanding the love for Vampire's wife on mumsnet either. It's a lot of money for meh.

OP, it's very difficult to help you find a dress, as we don't know what you look like. If your "slimmish" figure is good and you have good hair/legs/makeup skills, you don't need to "wow" with your dress. You also need to watch out that with your slight build, you don't end up looking like you're in costume with frills and flounces.

I'd maybe take a look at vintage Karen Millen: those dresses cost a couple of hundred quid, decades ago because they were so well made. Selling for pennies on second-hand sites. Fabulous material, simple but stunning detail. You will definitely need to size up.
