I know it's early!!!!!! But I've been invited to quite a fancy Xmas event and I always just feel like I look a bit basic....so planning ahead.

I'm quite petite, about 5'1 in height and kind of an inverted triangular shape. Generally slim

That Batsheva dress is £300!!
To look like a schoolgirl goat herder that's found some sequins.
Bloody awful, imagine turning up at a fancy do in that 🙄

AnotherDelphinium · 17/10/2024 14:07

@buzzheath me neither!

Our Christmas party has just been announced and I’ve been looking at the mint velvet occasion wear and very tempted with this;

Lovely! Very dramatic.

Surely this has to be a piss-take. 😂

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 17/10/2024 23:11

Ok if you’re a West Ham supporter I suppose.

FluffBut · 17/10/2024 23:20

Oh dear. Really?

Garlicbest · 18/10/2024 01:14

The green sequinned Karen Millen dress is stunning, @TopshopCropTop. But OP's only 5'1", it won't look anything like as dramatic on her. They've got these expensive and mostly boring numbers in petite. Bummer.

Oh my God, how could you possibly suggest those dresses? It looks like something made from the curtains in the Sound of Music.

It’ll certainly make people say ‘wow!’

Worldgonecrazy · 18/10/2024 08:00

Something all over sequins in whatever shape best suits you?

Julianne65 · 18/10/2024 08:20

You could hire a designer dress. By Rotation have beautiful Vampire’s Wife dresses available. I know some people think they have had their day but they are incredibly flattering and comfortable. They come up a little on the small size although I’m a 12 and the 12 fits like a dream.

This one is gorgeous and has silver sparkles through it

Oh dear … I liked the last worst dress ever too.

And the woman who arrives in the Batsheva dress (probably over a white shirt) is going to look so much better dressed than the rest …

OnaBegonia · 18/10/2024 08:52

@ANagsHead
Do you seriously think turning up at possibly a black tie/fancy do in that would make you the best dressed?
I think you're taking the piss now.
Look at all the other dresses; your suggestion is way left field, maybe if you're attending a very edgy fashion event and that is me being generous 🤣

wiesowarum · 18/10/2024 08:54

buzzheath · 17/10/2024 14:02

@ANagsHead ummmmmmmmmmm maybe I'm just not very sophisticated but I don't understand this dress

Nor me.
Sorry pp but the word hideous comes to mind.
Classy and elegant is timeless OP, and something well tailored/cut to flatter your shape.

wiesowarum · 18/10/2024 08:55

Haggia · 17/10/2024 18:15

Not even for Oktoberfest?

Nope.

It doesn't work imo with the denim shirt, but clicking into the links I think it's lovely- admittedly not for the price, but looks like a whole different dress when worn as intended!

M&S have a petite range of partywear- lots of sparkles! I've been really impressed with their clothes lately.

belleadele · 18/10/2024 09:14

Self portrait will have loads of great options

ANagsHead · 18/10/2024 09:21

Grin How is that a bad thing??

Do you seriously think turning up at possibly a black tie/fancy do in that would make you the best dressed?

Well, I’m blessed with the ability to choose - so I wouldn’t have worn it to any of the countless formal dinners I was required to attend as a pupil barrister. Nor would I wear it now to a sober college dinner at Oxford or Cambridge. (I’m connected to both and enjoy dressing for stately college events.) But it’s absolutely the sort of thing I’d expect to see at any Christmas party held by the artistic / academic institutions I’m involved with. And not just by the young.

Sorry not sorry if that upsets you!

piccolorhinoceros · 18/10/2024 09:25

@buzzheath any feedback on the suggestions people have posted so far? Don't think you answered what your budget is? When you say you want to avoid looking 'basic', what does basic look like for you normally? Like if you normally wear a mini dress, maybe you'd prefer a maxi..? Or vice versa.

In fairness, the Batsheva dress is definitely not basic 😂unfortunately it's also not very nice. I did see this on the related products which is even worse!

Pleated Mini Apron Dress in Tartan and Stripe

I think you're taking the piss now.

With the benefit of six decades of getting dressed - I think your outrage is hilarious!

People are allowed to wear things that you wouldn’t.

This gave me a right laugh today. The rest of the website is pretty odd too. Not the first outfit that would spring to mind when the words "Christmas Party" are mentioned.

I love the Mint Velvet and Wyse London party offerings. Timeless and classy
