Should I buy this coat? 😕

I tried on this coat yesterday and don't know if I should buy it so I'm posting here for honest feedback (link so I can delete later):

https://ibb.co/5WLRqc5

The pros:
It's not black (I have a black coat already albeit not amazing)
It's under £100
I can buy it now and be ready for when it turns cold which could be within weeks
It's partly wool
It's lined (this isn't always the case these days!)

The cons:
It's just 50% wool
I wasn't blown away by how it looked (i.e
no wow factor/"I must get this")
I don't know if the colour suits me
I'm in my forties and maybe it leans into my age?
Is it a bit dressing gowny? That's my worry with belted coats
Maybe it's just too outdated (I'm not someone who wears very fashionable/on trend clothes so maybe this doesn't matter)?

Please be brutally honest! Thanks 🙏

I think you can do better..The colour and patch pockets don't appeal to me.

Turnitoffnonagain · 10/10/2024 08:57

The style doesn't look like it would be particularly warm? I really like the colour though. Personally, I have tried to stop buying "it'll do for now" clothes if I don't love them as I always end up regretting it, and they go to the charity shop bag so quickly. The latest is a cream puffa jacket from M&S, bought less than a month ago and I'm already gone off it.

Lentilweaver · 10/10/2024 09:01

Really hard to get pure wool or even high wool content coats these days for a reasonable price. But I am on my third year with a Jigsaw charity shop coat which is pure wool. For that budget I would look at charity shops or Mango/Uniqlo which sometimes have the odd gem.

coatwoat · 10/10/2024 09:02

N.B. I'd probably wear it open but I didn't take a photo like that.

The material's heavy and I'd probably get a size up and wear jumpers underneath. I don't suit padded jackets at all, unfortunately. I look massive in them.

You are right that the pockets are a bit odd, I hadn't noticed.

I could spend more but there's nowhere selling wool coats where I live or even within an hour's travel. It's all manmade fibres, even at £80+. I could have a look in London, though (don't want to buy a coat online particularly).

I like it apart from the pockets, they sit too low down on you. Wrt wool, I always look for a mix so you can hang it up and not worry about moths.

Crojo · 10/10/2024 09:15

I like it. The colour is nice, I like the longer length, and it looks like it buttons all the way up. So many wool or wool style coats are the lapel style that leave the chest area open.
I can't see an issue with the pockets personally, they look nice and deep and I think they add some shape at the hips.

SnapdragonToadflax · 10/10/2024 09:21

It's a nice enough coat, but not wow. If you're unsure I wouldn't bother. I like the length and the buttons but not the pockets, and it doesn't look warm.

That colour is tricky too, and doesn't go with your clothes underneath which suggests it might not be your best colour.

johnson39 · 10/10/2024 09:27

I love it and think it really suits, the pockets go with the style and when you fasten the belt will look good, also
Love the colour as will go with most things, lovely staple coat.

twentysevendresses · 10/10/2024 09:27

I really don't like the colour...it wouldn't go with anything I own and is such a strange shade of 'not quite brown'.

Turnitoffnonagain · 10/10/2024 09:28

My favourite coat is a wool mix one I found in TK Maxx years ago, the best thing I've ever got from there. Might be worth a look?

Brokenm · 10/10/2024 09:29

YOu can get better and nicer colour for under 100 pounds.

Lentilweaver · 10/10/2024 09:38

Boden coats have just popped up on my feed. £250 for less than 50% wool! I recall when you could get at least 70% for that price.

LunaNorth · 10/10/2024 09:41

It’s a bit Dr Who…

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 10/10/2024 09:42

I like the colour and the shape. I don't like the pockets. It doesn't look warm. The sleeves look quite narrow which will be a problem if you're adding layers for warmth.

If you have to ask on here, the answer is probably no.

TwigTheWonderKid · 10/10/2024 09:45

A new coat should make you feel a bit "skippy" or at least feel totally "right". So no, don't buy it.

adogcalledbumble · 10/10/2024 09:46

I like the cut and drape OP but the colour reminds me of Ronnie Barker in Open All Hours. Sorry.

HappydaysArehere · 10/10/2024 09:51

Doesn’t look warm enough. Don’t care for the colour.

Radiolala · 10/10/2024 09:53

Why would you contemplate buying something that you don’t really like?

tinymoon · 10/10/2024 09:56

It’s too open at the top. I imagine having a cold neck all the time. I suppose you could wear a nice big scarf with it, but it would have to have the right outfit underneath, which would be annoying to me. I also don’t like the buttons

Nothatgingerpirate · 10/10/2024 10:00

Uh ..
Find another one.
😬

CharlotteStreetW1 · 10/10/2024 10:05

You're right about it being dressing-gowny. I had a dressing gown exactly like that when I was younger. Hideous thing (although it was warm).

Princessfluffy · 10/10/2024 10:10

I don't think it hangs well as the fabric appears to be too lightweight for the shape and length of the coat.

OuterSpaceCadet · 10/10/2024 10:12

Am in the minority but I love the colour, the pockets, the length and the collar. I can't tell what the fabric quality seems like from the pic? If it was really thin I think it'll look shit really quickly as it wears. But if it's decently thick I'd go for it. Where's it from?

Comefromaway · 10/10/2024 10:17

I don't like the colour and the cut on you. I've seen much nicer (I tried on a lot of camel wool & wool blend coats recently and ended up getting a navy wool coat and a camel trench coat!)
