Embracing natural nails

Not had any gels or acrylics since July & I'm really trying to get my natural nails to a healthy state!
We go away in 2 weeks. I'm trying not to cave & go to a salon.
What do you natural nail ladies do with your nails when you go on holiday?

Precipice · 07/10/2024 22:20

I do nothing to my nails ever, save cutting them.

TooManyNiblings · 07/10/2024 22:20

I just trim mine neatly.

Howmanyusernames123 · 07/10/2024 22:20

Trim them.

MeMyselfIgor · 07/10/2024 22:21

I don't understand the question! Why would being on holiday be any different to being anywhere else?

user7654263 · 07/10/2024 22:23

I don’t have acrylics/gel or anything like that. 99 percent of the time my nails are natural (but long). On holiday I paint them gold or pearlescent white (myself - not at a nail bar)

StSwithinsDay · 07/10/2024 22:24

I get a manicure every few weeks - shaping, cuticle work etc..
Then a nail strengthener on top. No colour, shellac, gel or anything else.

ToBeOrNotToBee · 07/10/2024 22:27

I can't use any products on my nails without drying them out, even nail strengtheners. Nail oils just don't seem to penetrate and moisten.
But I've recently started using nursem hand cream and the difference is incredible.

I used to always get a gel manicure and pedicure for my holidays. Last time, I didn’t, and it made zero difference! Still had a lovely time. I filed my nails before I went, and the sea and pool kept them nice and clean. Won’t be bothering again in future!

AllAboutNiamh · 07/10/2024 22:30

I do my own nails, always have. 90% of the time they are an Essie nude.

I'm not quie sure what you need to dowith them but I much prefer natural nails and follow some Instagram accounts promoting them. Try looking up Mateja Nova and similar for inspiration. Harriet Worthington is also great and there are others whose names I forget right now and can't check as my phone screen is broken! But the natural nails on these accounts look so modern and stylish compared to the gel and acrylic stuff.

YeahNoIDontThinkSo · 07/10/2024 22:43

Trim nicely, look after cuticles and apply oil.

TheDandyLion · 08/10/2024 09:18

Trim nicely, treat kindly. You can still look glam without polish. Sarah Jessica Parker rarely wears nail polish.

Redcrayons · 08/10/2024 09:29

I love gel nails, but they wrecked my nails so I’ve been on an extended break from them.

I file them down every week so they are really short and use nail strengthening base with a nude on top. Ive got long nail beds so they look OK, but I do miss have nice colours.

Im not swearing off them forever, but I won’t go back to having them done every 3 weeks.

Beamur · 08/10/2024 09:32

Gels wreck my nails so I always have natural nails.
If you're missing the element of feeling groomed you could have a manicure to shape your nails and tidy the cuticles but just leave them bare.

hereismydog · 08/10/2024 09:33

Two thin coats of clear BIAB as my nails start to split once they get past a certain length if I don’t use it!

They look a little ragged around the cuticles today as I’ve not infilled them for 10 days (that’s all I get out of them due to rapidly-growing pregnancy nails!) so will do them this evening. Will probably take them down a little, too. Also - cuticle oil is your friend!

Mine generally look like this. I use hand cream a lot as you can see from the tube in the picture right next to my laptop.

Because people do get beauty treatments for a holiday sometimes

I think most people who have natural nails probably just whack a bit of nail varnish on themselves for their holiday. Old school style

I don’t 🤷‍♀️

i don’t really like the look of polish. And if you do it yourself it chips after a day or so so then you need to find some remover while on holiday.

i clip them even so there’s no rags that might catch or need trimming while I’m away. Then I forget about them completely.

I stopped using gel about 18 months ago. My nails are strong again now so it's wouldn't go back to using gel. I'm not keen on regular polish. I do like nail wraps though. They last about a week and don't cause any damage at all. They look much better than just polish. I couldn't be bothered with them all the time but they're nice for holidays etc

dudsville · 09/10/2024 08:46

I always had very strong and fast growing nails until peri. I used to love varnish and did them myself weekly. Then they dried out. I have bottles of the rich nivea cream all over the house, and whenever I use it I concentrate on the nail bed and cuticle. They're in great condition now, and I'm so used to this now that I think it looks better. My eye has adjusted such that done up nails can look "fun", much like a sequin top, but I don't think it looks "good" anymore. It's been a short time for you so your eye is still adjusting, but get some lovely lotions or oils for your hands and nails, give the nails a good trim, and you're good to go!

NotmySundaybest · 10/10/2024 07:24

I have noticed more people, including tv personalities with natural nails.
They do feel cleaner

I think they look far more classy natural. A neutral solid colour nail can look fine but the patterned stuff projects a certain image IMO. I appreciate this sounds really snobbish but it is true.

Agree.

I would never damage myself getting gels or acrylic.

Keep them nicely filled and moderately short length, work to keep cuticles neat and moisturized, and use a neutral Essie polish.
