What do you wear in winter?

DreamHolidays · 28/09/2024 20:06

I tend to be cold so wear jumper after jumper. Usually plain and simple in different colours πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I can’t help feeling attracted by the dresses or shirts. More colourful, more patterns, just much more pretty.
But how can you not get cold ?!?

So please tell me, what do you wear now that the weather is getting colder that is still pretty but still keeps you warm??
Any ideas welcome!

Over sized jumper and leggins. Every day Grin

There does get to a point when the temperature drops too much and I revert to oversized jumpers, Primark fur lined leggings (absolute godsend!) and giant puffer coat outdoors and Oodie indoors!
Fashion can do one at this point!!LOLπŸ˜…

Brora pointelle thermal vest layered under another long sleeve Brora thermal. Cashmere jumper on top & a long Cashmere fringed cardigan by Crush Cashmere. Wool/Cashmere mix socks from Tk Maxx & pointelle thermal tights underneath the trousers if it's cold.
Pure wool coat & a huge Cashmere scarf/Wrap & gloves.

Mishmag · 29/09/2024 10:46

I find the velvet tights/leggings from primark really warm. Then a long sleeved thermal top (I have both thick and thin depending on the weather/ what I’m doing) under my normal layers. So that could be a woollen dress/a tshirt, jumper and jeans/a long sleeved tshirt and cardigan. Plus wool socks. When I first got the thin Uniqlo heattech tops I was trying to wear them instead of a tshirt and thought they were useless but as an extra layer under all your normal layers they actually work well without feeling bulky. I like the ones from Sainsbury’s and M&S too.

DreamHolidays · 29/09/2024 11:20

@Mishmag I would have worn the thermal layer instead of a Tshirt too!

Thats a good point thank you.

Absolutely a thermal top from Uniqlo or M&S, plus leggings and boots, then normal clothes on top. What also works for me is a tube skirt; if my legs are warm, I'm warm.

KnickerlessParsons · 29/09/2024 11:41

Have you tried a long sleeved vest?

Chrishelle · 29/09/2024 12:04

I'm going for long sleeve thermal vests this winter and thermal leggings to wear under trousers. I'm fed up feeling cold.

flippytheseptember · 29/09/2024 12:06

mostly short dresses with jumpers over it and tights. im 37 so in that weird phase where most of the stores sell clothes that feels 'too young'

Iamthemoom · 29/09/2024 12:17

Uniqlo sell very thin thermal long sleeve vests. One of those under a dress or jumper keeps me warm! And the primark fleece lined leggings as tights are super warm or heat holders tights with a dress and boots.

HippeePrincess · 29/09/2024 12:42

Where are you all living that you need to wrap up like you’re in the arctic? Hand on heart the only time I’ve known people wear base layers and thermals IRL is if they’re planning a winter hike, holiday to Iceland, or going skiing.

Anyway, I tend to have 2-3 β€œweights” of cardigan/jumper/jackets and just choose that part accordingly (add tights and boots) to everything I’ve been wearing year round (except for the really lightweight clothes for the 10 days of proper heat we might get in the summer). I do love a chunky jumper dress though but have to be choosy as to when I wear those as I’ve been caught out before wearing that with nothing much underneath and been sweltering so can’t take it off.

DreamHolidays · 28/09/2024 20:35

@Ohwhatshoestobuy where do you buy them?

Jumper dresses you can buy anywhere from ASOS to Primark to Next. Haven’t seen any yet but then again I wasn’t looking, just in Zara and New Look yesterday briefly. Zara and New Look have them too.

PyreneanAubrie · 29/09/2024 12:49

@HippeePrincess

I'm West Pennines so not exactly the frozen north although we do get frequent gales and a lot of rain. I do keep the house cold though, because I have big woolly dogs, plus I have Raynauds, so I need to keep my legs and feet warm, hence wearing 17 layers of clothing πŸ˜†

DreamHolidays · 29/09/2024 13:07

@HippeePrincess im in the north of England.

Following this thread, i dug out a thermal long sleeve Tshirt I have, put a dress (100% wool), a cardi (nice thick wool), tights.

Im cold…. And I’m thinking of getting my Oodie out again. That’s about the only thing that keep me warm.
The house isn’t even cold! It’s still 19oC.

Poisonwood · 29/09/2024 13:08

Well I’m Highlands so are the frozen North 😁. Honestly - I’ve found the most difference is actually using layers of real fabrics. Real wool jumpers/cardigans, cotton thermal long sleeved tops under, even a cotton thermal cami under that. Wool skirts, heavy tweed etc. Sheepskin lined boots. Alpaca socks, though hand knitted fisherman’s socks beat every other kind of socks and are fun to make/gift.

I no longer spend money on any winter clothes that don’t meet these criteria, feels like a false economy.

CapaciousHag · 29/09/2024 13:13

I agree with what you say, @Poisonwood - if one is going to be mostly outside in freezing temperatures. But if you’re out in cold streets for only brief amounts of time, and then the Tube, or a car or tram, that sort of dressing becomes a burden as you have to start peeling layers off and carrying them about with you.

Absolutely nothing worse than heavy layers of damp wool steaming in a Tube carriage. Grin

Comtesse · 29/09/2024 13:24

Maybe try some thermal tights?

Britpopbaby · 29/09/2024 13:25

Thermal tops under jumpers @DreamHolidays should help.

RaraRachael · 29/09/2024 13:27

I got fleece lined tights and leggings from Primark last year and they were amazing. I've also got 2 Primark lightweight fleeces that I wear around the house to avoid putting the heating on as long as possible. Although they're lightweight they keep me nice and warm.

I bought a thermal top last year but it was too tight and made me uncomfortable.

StormingNorman · 29/09/2024 13:40

Uniqlo Heat Tech base layers. They do three levels of warmth.

Pashminas or Rise & Fall cashmere wraps.

Ski socks instead of normal socks.

Anicecumberlandsausage · 29/09/2024 13:54

Part of my job is working in the cold. Good thermals are a must. Thick socks. Vests are fine but I prefer long sleeves under jumpers myself. A good woolly hat. I say f* it to fashion, I'm wearing my puffa coat. Indoors it's jeans, fluffy jumpers, slippers. At bedtime fleecy jammies a robe. I'm in the market for some stout boots actually, but the nice ones are £££.

HillsNValleys · 29/09/2024 13:58

Dresses in heavier materials with warm tights (fleece lined when it gets really cold) & boots.

Its all the other bits that keep me really snug. Thermal base layers if really cold. Good gloves, hat or ear muffs, scarf and a decent coat.

It’s not cold enough yet in London for all that, though. I don’t tend to get the tights out until after October half term.

DeccaM · 29/09/2024 14:32

I love blazers for work, they can look stylish and add extra warmth. I have some winter weight skirts and dresses (in wool or cord) and I wear leggings or cotton tights under them. But I also wear trousers throughout the winter. If it’s bitterly cold you can always wear tights under trousers, but I don’t think I’ve done that in many years. Probably the last time was when I lived in the Midwest of the US. Now that was cold!

mynameiscalypso · 29/09/2024 16:35

I'm in London and I've been wearing a base layer of thermals for the last week. I have a desk-based job (whether WFH or in the office) and I get very cold sitting all day at my computer or in meetings

TwigTheWonderKid · 29/09/2024 17:05

Definitely layers and ensuring your hands and feet and head are warm so your body can concentrate on keeping the rest of you warm.

If anyone can recommend, or comes across any non-old lady and non-ugly, fleece ecor sheepskin lined trainers (not high tops) please do let me know.

WhereAreWeNow · 29/09/2024 17:07

Merino wool dresses. Warm tights with warm socks. Uniqlo heatech tops under everything.
Good coat.
