What do you wear in winter?

I tend to be cold so wear jumper after jumper. Usually plain and simple in different colours πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I can’t help feeling attracted by the dresses or shirts. More colourful, more patterns, just much more pretty.
But how can you not get cold ?!?

So please tell me, what do you wear now that the weather is getting colder that is still pretty but still keeps you warm??
Any ideas welcome!

I have winter dresses… I wear merino leggings under them with wool socks. I have a couple merino slips. I have dresses!

Me too, I have quite a few wool dresses. And wool trousers of various types. I also love Falke merino tights and often wear merino leggings over them for 2 base layers. And I have a merino slip dress, various merino vests/long sleeve tops and a few merino silk ones.

Right now I'm wearing a merino vest with a silk/merino dress and a wool cardigan. And Falke merino tights with silk/merino leggings over them.

Then when it starts getting really cold, I add more layers. I have a good selection of wool and cashmere jumpers. Over all of that I'll wear a big cardigan. I love my Donegal Coatigan from Celtic and Co: www.celticandco.com/womens/clothing/cardigans/donegal-hooded-coatigan?colourid=815&glCountry=GB&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw9eO3BhBNEiwAoc0-jQxlUgDB3wO2ds3LIfDv4PhK4Jvb8owpL2cKHSy7ZKZCkeY2I9S-EBoCY7EQAvD_BwE

Forgot to mention, Dilling is a great place for merino base layers and slip dresses, which are machine washable on a gentle wool wash. Engel are also good for wool/silk blend base layers, which again can be washed on a gentle wool wash. Icebreaker and Smartwool are places to look for tops, leggings and dresses and have the bonus of being machine washable on a regular 30 degree cycle.

Thank you @Netcam thats very helpful.
I've tried googling merino base layer or teeshirt but no one those had come up.

My winter wardrobe is irrelevant as I always have to throw massive jumper on top of an outfit to stay warm 🀷
Not helpful I realise...

JaceLancs · 29/09/2024 19:22

I wear sweater dresses with thick tights and boots
Also like a checked brushed cotton shirt dress - I have a few from Barbour

I always wear the heat tech long sleeve thermals under everything in the winter. I’m always cold.

If I’m wearing a dress or skirt, Snag do some fantastic merino tights. Really cosy.

quirkychick · 29/09/2024 20:22

I also wear heattech layers, the thinnest layers are very soft and stretchy (I didn't get on with the m&s ones, I found them too tight/restrictive). Long-sleeved thermal under a merino jumper dress with heattech leggings as tights, Danish wool socks. Or a thermal top under a shirt layered with cardigan or jumper.

APurpleSquirrel · 29/09/2024 20:28

Knit jumper dresses or sweat jumper dresses with leggings & calf-length boots; short sleeve knit jumper dresses with a long sleeve base layer; skinny jeans with jumpers/hoodies.

quirkychick · 29/09/2024 20:56

I do often wear jeans, but also thermal leggings with a short skirt - denim, cord, wool. Leather joggers or leggings are also v warm and waterproof, as they often have fleecy lining and keep the wind out.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 29/09/2024 22:58

I couldn't imagine wearing jeans in cold weather.

Jeans in cold weather

Where do you get merino leggings, @LunaTheCat ?

i buy them from icebreaker- they are quite expensive but dry overnight so I manage with 2
i also just a green wear a longish dress with thick socks and boots.

Having just emerged form a Melbourne winter which was very brrrrr, I recommend Aldi merino for base layers. Cheap and better made then in previous years. Beware the necklines for women in some styles as they are wedded to women = v-neck. In such cases I go for men's small. I've never tried their merino leggings since I put my finger thought them pulling them up - HeatTech UltraWarm leggings all the way.

coxesorangepippin · 30/09/2024 03:02

Live in Canada so I'm often cloaked in a snow coat and snow boots

But usually jeans, a roll neck and a shirt over it when just indoors

Sometimes leggings underneath

ElizabethVonArnim · 30/09/2024 07:28

I've got a John Smedley extra fine merino jumper in a slim fit with a scoop neck. It's perfectly respectable as a top in its own right but it really comes into its own when it's freezing and it works as a vest. I got it off eBay because the new ones didn't have the scoop neck (the slightly lower neck makes it invisible under clothes). It's been really good for a couple of years and still looks smart, so I think it's a good brand.

GameOfJones · 30/09/2024 07:46

Fleece lined leggings and a vest with an oversized jumper.

Thick tights, socks over the top and any of my dresses with a vest or t shirt underneath.

Jeans, cords or cargo pants with either a jumper or a long sleeve thin t shirt and a chunky cardigan/coatigan

Ankle boots

Are my winter uniform.

TheOGCCL · 30/09/2024 09:15

I thought I felt the cold but feel relatively underdressed on this thread. I am in London and walk and cycle a lot. Very warm jumpers are often too hot.

I wear turtle neck tops as a base layer (not thermal wear particularly but keep the cold out), wool cardigans or jumpers, corduroy trousers, knee length socks and various boots, the warmest of which are fur lined. I also usually wear fingerless gloves inside and outside. Often two scarves, one thin, one thick. Ear muffs when it’s very cold.

I agree jeans do not keep you warm unless you have leggings or tights underneath. But lots of layers underneath stuff make me feel a bit squeezed in/fat.

Turnitoffnonagain · 30/09/2024 09:33

Came back to add, if you are buying a simple plain sweater, the men's in M&S are far better made, have more natural materials and are warmer than the women's. Ditto the socks and t shirts.

DreamHolidays · 30/09/2024 09:40

@Turnitoffnonagain when buying jumpers/sweaters, I often go to the men’s section.
Yes it’s not unusual that they are better quality. They are often longer than the women’s which I like.
The only downside for me is that the colours are often darker.
