What do you wear in winter?

I tend to be cold so wear jumper after jumper. Usually plain and simple in different colours πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚

I can’t help feeling attracted by the dresses or shirts. More colourful, more patterns, just much more pretty.
But how can you not get cold ?!?

So please tell me, what do you wear now that the weather is getting colder that is still pretty but still keeps you warm??
Any ideas welcome!

I wear White Stuff Patty Plain tights, M&S straight leg joggers (that are really a legging). M&S linen trousers, short sleeved t-shirt with a long sleeved t-shirt over it, a Fat Face or Seasalt linen pinafore dress, a long Fat Face shirt (worn open), a Seasalt handyband, two pairs of socks, fingerless mitts and sheepskin boots.

That's my basic cold weather uniform.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 28/09/2024 22:17

I have winter dresses in thicker cotton, cord, crushed velvet, cotton flannel and wool. If need be Em and Ess long sleeved thermal vests. I'm a 14/16 but vests are size 8 or 10 as they're very stretchy and the smaller sizes don't add bulk.

Thermal tights, loads of wool cardigans (EribΓ© or Palava's heritage knitwear or Oska's boiled wool) Fingerless gloves. Flat lace up boots.

persisted · 28/09/2024 22:36

Thick tights, the cotton or wool ones are warmer than the opaque ones.

knee high socks, gave mum some silk and wool mix ones for Christmas last year from John Lewis, she barely took them off so need some for myself this year.

Have a look at Dilling for merino thermals, I have a slip from there I wear under dresses.

Knee high boots, scarf, a blazer type jacket to go over the top of everything. I have a couple of different ones as it gets freezing at work.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 28/09/2024 23:19

Wearing this cardigan is like wearing your own personal central heating system. I see they now pair it with a tank top but I think that might cause spontaneous combustion.

Palava Heritage knitwear

Oldraver · 29/09/2024 00:00

I still wear dresses in winter, mostly Lady V Lyra's. They are longer, full skirt ( so lots of fabric) and I wear a cotton tiered underskirt for extra oomph and warmth

As they are long I can get away with wearing long socks, though usually wear with knee high boots

Ohwhatshoestobuy · 29/09/2024 00:18

@DreamHolidays all over the place really, my favourite is a Tu one from Sainsbury’s, it’s beautifully soft and warm.

Rina66 · 29/09/2024 06:41

If I'm wearing a blouse or thin jumper, I usually wear a long knitted coatigan over them.
If I'm more more casual in leggings or joggers, an oversized unlined jacket over them always with a long vest underneath too (has to be a LONG vest though, to my hips so it doesn't ride up and leave a gap, that's where I get chilly)
I like wrist warmers too, I've got them in lots of colours to extend the sleeves of all of my jumpers, cardigans and coatigans.

I feel the cold.
I am already back in my Heattech long sleeved vests and will no doubt be in the thicker one soon.
I also have a selection of fleeces and gilets which I wear at home as DH and the DC would just be in their underwear and we wouldn't be able to afford to eat if we had the heating on at a temperate where I was comfortable.
I find it so depressing. It doesn't help that I'm short and pear shaped and all of these clothes just add more bulk around my hips and thighs. I am so happy in warmer weather when I can sashay around in lovely dresses.

Howisittheendofsummer24 · 29/09/2024 07:09

Isobaa do merino camis which are quite fine and go under everything (check sport pursuit)

fortedeimarmi · 29/09/2024 07:41

Jersey dresses, and as it gets colder, I layer thermal long sleeved tops and leggings underneath. I also wear a thin slip, to stop the jersey clinging to the leggings. I'm nice and toasty.

PyreneanAubrie · 29/09/2024 07:46

Depends what your personal style and budget is but Toast crinkle cotton dresses are very warm and reassuringly weighty for winter, layered up over tights, leggings and boots.
Really, the key is lots of thin layers. Also jeans are really cold for winter, even with tights under. Dresses are always much warmer.

Wigtopia · 29/09/2024 07:49

I layer up quite a lot, with various, lengths, thicknesses and sizes of jumpers and cardigans and also a mix of shirt and long sleeve jumpers and cardigans.

it’s has kind of ended working out as a boho type style with maybe a long sleeve top under a dress with sleeves that come part way down my arm, a long sleeve cardigan over that with a short sleeve cardigan on top of that! And a nice big thick scarf.

sounds a bit nuts but it works for my style πŸ˜‚

Ilovemyshed · 29/09/2024 07:50

Thin base layer with or without sleeves over a natural wool roll neck, either cashmere or lambswool.

Completelyjo · 29/09/2024 07:51

I wear nude long sleeve bodysuits underneath any sort of blouse or top in winter. I also wear them under jumpers, the thought of just a vest under a jumper gives me the heebie jeebies.
I would always wear a cardigan over the blouse and then a coat/ scarf if I was going outside though.

Usually if I wear midi dresses I wear cropped leggings underneath that can’t be seen and then little ankle boots and it looks like bare leg but so warm!

RosesAndHellebores · 29/09/2024 07:55

I think much of it is warm hands/feet/head. Also, low iron can make you feel.cold, so Inwinder if the very chilly mortals could do with getting their levels checked.

DreamHolidays · 28/09/2024 20:34

I can’t say I find that warm enough!
I wear a vest under my jumpers and I often feel cold.

Maybe I just need to accept this is my lot for the winter….

Not being funny, but is it a thermal vest? They’re way cosier than cotton vest tops

Lifestooshort71 · 29/09/2024 07:59

Gosh, you all sound so beautifully put together! I like the idea of thermals but am on cancer drugs that can cause random periods of self-combustion so need to be able to whip layers off - I don't think me standing in thermal underwear would be a good look! So, I'm very aware of what each layer would like in an emergency strip down....usually start with a patterned hip-length cami-top (summer stuff), with shorter boxy t-shirt (cami bottom peeps out covering buddha belly), then an assortment of jumpers or cardigans and topped off by a large gilet. Bottom half - thick elasticated-waist trousers from M&S, long socks and fur-lined bootees, no thermal leggings or tights unfortunately 😒. I've got an assortment of turtle dove fingerless gloves and a big fat pair of fur-lined mittens to go over the top, finished off by a wraparound warm scarf - can't do hats any more. My colours and patterns are usually mix-and-match but I try to have a colour theme going!

This is pretty much exactly what I do. My husband laughs at my multiple layers but it does work. I'm warm and often get told I look "Arty" and stylish 😊

unsync · 29/09/2024 08:36

I get silk thermals from Patra or Landsend. Lightweight, especially under trousers and warm.

DreamHolidays · 29/09/2024 09:47

Thank you all!
Plenty of ideas for me to play around!

@Wigtopia i actually really like that idea of layering. It also looks good - on other people.
Somehow I’ve never dare doing the Tshirt, dress with shorter sleeves plus cardi on top. I’m not sure why. You’ve given me the push to try it out though.

@unsync you know silk thermal have been on my radar years ago but I couldn’t afford them then. I had completely forgotten about it so that will be nice to try.
im also looking at some merino thin β€˜base layer’

Over sized jumper and leggins. Every day Grin

CapaciousHag · 29/09/2024 10:13

Don’t you get bored and want to try something else, @dontforgetme?

(Speaking as someone who hasn’t worn leggings since the mid-80s! I’m always curious about what the attraction is.)

dontforgetme · 29/09/2024 10:18

@CapaciousHag i absolutely love being comfortable and I have some quite stylish leggins and jumpers! Gone are my days of being uncomfortable in jeans. I do wear knit dresses, or long sleeve tops and dungaree type dresses with boots through winter if going out out.
