Does this dress fit?

I ordered a dress on a whim, I don't usually wear them. It's woolen. Does it fit or should I stick to trousers? I actually like the cut but not sure if it's the right size, although I think a larger size might not fit the shoulders?

Yes! And I agree it's a really nice shape. You look good.

MetaDaughter · 19/09/2024 09:10

It seems too small around the chest and the waist is too high so sits oddly. It just looks a bit tight and uncomfortable on you, rather than skimming elegantly.

Baguettesandcheeseforever · 19/09/2024 09:14

It doesn’t look quite right but I can’t put my finger on why. Maybe different underwear would help it to fall slightly differently on your body? Also the sleeves look untidy. Maybe adjust where they wrinkle a little?

canwestopwiththenameshaming · 19/09/2024 09:15

I think a size bigger would be too wide at the shoulders like you say. The shape is lovely on you OP and I bet it feels very comfortable since it's wool. Perfect for autumn! I'd add thick tights or leggings and some nice boots, maybe a chunky necklace too. It's nice on you OP and the size is right.

canwestopwiththenameshaming · 19/09/2024 09:17

PS I wonder if you're fairly small OP? If you're petite like me it might be why the sleeves are a bit wrinkled and also why a size up wouldn't sit properly on your frame. I always wear petite sizing for those reasons (I'm 5'1")

spotddog · 19/09/2024 09:24

You need a better bra. It would change the way the dress fits and lift your whole shape.

Shorten sleeves if too long. The rest looks fine.

Also, does black suit you? Colour really changes to whole look.

Dressedilemma · 19/09/2024 09:24

I'm 5'9 but I do have short arms!

OP posts:
DancingNotDrowning · 19/09/2024 09:26

It’s too tight on your bust but a bigger size would be too big on your shoulders and hips.

this isn’t the dress for you I’m afraid

GoditsSeptember · 19/09/2024 09:29

What @spotddog said.
You look fine but if I'm nitpicking to the extreme I'd go for a better bra. Some people like to find their colour palette that suits them based on seasons, pretty much skin tone being warm or cool and eye/hair colour. As an example, jet black hair and pale skin = red or banana yellow or even mauve can look pretty good. I'm fair and I cannot wear black near my face but fine for trousers. Nor can I wear white but cream is better. I can't wear wool dresses either despite being more petite.

LadyKenya · 19/09/2024 09:31

The sleeves look too long.

TheOGCCL · 19/09/2024 09:37

It kind of looks too big and too small at the same time so think maybe it’s just not the cut for you. But it’s hard to tell properly without seeing your full outfit(s) especially shoes. No one just stares at the middle half of your body.

MetaDaughter · 19/09/2024 09:37

Ah, hearing your height - it’s a dress cut for a shorter person I’m afraid!

You should be able to find something similar that looks more tailored to your own proportions.

Dressedilemma · 19/09/2024 09:39

I can't wear yellow.
I once did one of those online photo things which told me I was a deep winter. I often wear black but usually either trousers or a black (and something) jumper/tshirt not all black.

OP posts:
Todaywasbetter · 19/09/2024 09:48

It’s weird, but I agree with the poster. Who said it’s too big and too small at the same time. It looks somehow uncomfortable but if you love it, go for it.

MetaDaughter · 19/09/2024 09:53

@Dressedilemma there’s a fairly hilarious thread running at the moment where the OP is looking for a very particular cut of black knitted dress. So there are lots of suggested versions. Have a look - a few of them might appeal to you - or you may come across knitted dress brands you haven’t tried yet:

Buying a black dress on a whim suggests you’re feeling the need for one in your wardrobe. But you don’t have to settle for the first you see - it may take a bit of experimentation to arrive at the ideal thing for you.

Honestly, been searching for a dress like this for about 10years… any help you can give is very much appreciated. I want a dress that is: Roll neck...

DeCaray · 19/09/2024 09:53

It's not a good fit. Different underwear and a slip may make a difference but as it is it looks ill fitting in the under arm and chest area.

The style suits you.

Q124 · 19/09/2024 09:54

I don't think it's very flattering on you. The sleeves are definitely too long.

Shadow12345 · 19/09/2024 09:56

Not the cut for you. Looks a bit awkward in the mid-section.

Fozzleyplum · 19/09/2024 10:15

It's the right size, but not a good fit for you.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 19/09/2024 22:25

The sleeves are too long. It sits really oddly at your right shoulder and right hand side. The lenght is odd too. It looks droopy at one side but in a Cos deliberately assymetric way, just a droopy hem way.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 19/09/2024 23:40

but NOT in a Cos deliberately assymetric way, just a droopy hem way.

Garlictest · 20/09/2024 01:49

I agree, it suits you but ... (sorry!) I think this dress was made for Ms Average UK who, incredibly, is only 5'3". I'm 5'8" and used to get this fits-but-doesn't-fit effect all the time with dresses.

Now I look at where they say the model's height and avoid dresses modelled by short-arses! Websites that publish customer feedback often give a clue to the ideal height, too.

Send it back. You've evidently got a great figure, it deserves a dress that goes with it.

Garlictest · 20/09/2024 02:00

Can you spend £90, OP? They say the model's 176cm.

@Garlictest it's that dress!

Miss Average UK is 5’3?! I’m 5’2 and everything is way too long on me! Confused

And all the catalogue models are 5’6 and up when I check.
