Honest thoughts on these shoes...?

I want some shoes for an upcoming holiday which will involve a lot of walking around cities, could be rainy at times, could be hot and sunny at other times (Autumn in Japan!)

I'm trying to take the smallest amount of clothes/ shoes possible, so I'm looking for something that's OK for walking in the day but also could be dressed up a bit going to restaurants at night (nowhere super posh).

I'm in my mid-30's. Are these stylish or are they terrible? I like the colour but really can't tell if they are more suitable for someone much older...

If you don't like them do you have any other suggestions that are good day-to-night shoes that can do for walking around and also restaurants?

I think you need to make your peace with taking two pairs. Styling aside, any shoes will start to hurt if you’re wearing them all day and then all evening as well. Especially if you get caught in a downpour.

Gonk123 · 03/09/2024 18:40

Hhhm nice for day time but not sure they are nice for night time. Could you get some pretty flip flop style or small sandals that wouldn’t take up too much room for the evening

LancsLass1 · 03/09/2024 18:49

@LoobyDoop2 You're probably right!
@Gonk123 Yes I think I'll have to take some sandals as well - I'm getting a bit obsessed with packing minimally! 😅

Awww, you’ll be able to slide some small sandals in somewhere. I think you’ll regret it if you don’t that’s all. It’s nice to feel nice.

HeySummerWhereAreYou · 03/09/2024 18:53

Yeah they're really nice. Smile As has been said though, not suitable for night time going out. Unless you're going to somewhere like the pizza hut!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 03/09/2024 19:01

I like the colour but really can't tell if they are more suitable for someone much older...

Because older people like to wear horrible shoes?

They're not nice. I wouldn't wear them because they are dull and ugly.

plasticmack · 03/09/2024 19:03

I personally would be fine taking just one pair of shoes, have done it multiple times when only taking minimal luggage.

Those shoes wouldn't be my first choice but I don't dislike them. Personally I'd take something like a pair of black samba's. I don't have any, but my older teen daughter does and she wears them day and night.

pictoosh · 03/09/2024 19:05

I don't like them.

CharlotteBog · 03/09/2024 19:38

You need to consider that if you're doing a lot of walking and it might be raining, that you'll want a different pair of shoes to 1) change into and 2) allow the wet ones to dry/air.
You'll have the ones you'll be travelling in as well though.

CharlotteBog · 03/09/2024 19:39

You could get some of those pumps that you can roll up.

Winederlust · 03/09/2024 19:47

They're inoffensive but pretty dull tbh. There are much more stylish trainers out there if that's what you're after.
Agree though that you're better with 2 pairs min for the reasons PP have given above.

BlanklyMyDear · 03/09/2024 19:50

Sorry - they’re a bit vile - to my eyes. (I am twice your age and very offended that you think I wear style free footwear.)

Why not just get some mainstream, cool trainers? I know nothing about the mores of Japanese restaurant life but would have thought fresh clean Nikes or whatever would be acceptable in most places.

Squeeze in some barely there flat strappy sandals as an alternative.

Tbh you are going to need more than one pair of shoes anyway - just to give your feet a rest.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 03/09/2024 19:53

They're fine. I have a similar pair add a drop of WD40 to the zip when you get them.

Newpillow · 03/09/2024 19:53

I'm older and think they're awful! Get yourself a good pair of trainers and take a pair of sandals.

Purplecatshopaholic · 03/09/2024 19:54

Sorry, they are awful imo. Wouldn’t be caught dead in those. Take two pairs on holiday, so your feet get a change - and make neither of them these!

ChilliPB · 03/09/2024 20:07

I’m also in my 30s and also off to Japan this autumn!

I wouldn’t wear those, sorry! They aren’t stylish at all and I agree with PPs that you’ll want two pairs. Even comfy shoes can start to hurt if it’s all you wear. It’s nice to change into something else for evenings.

I’m not sure about sandals, might not be warm enough depending on when exactly you are going and where? It’s generally pretty dry in autumn but if you’re going quite soon then it’s still typhoon season so I’d be prepared for rain and definitely take more than one pair of shoes. Are you doing any hiking?

I’ve been to Japan before and learnt some lessons from that trip - I am definitely taking slip off shoes, as you will be removing your shoes frequently at temples, shrines, restaurants, inside the ryokan or hotel etc. You may want to think about slip on shoes instead. Also, people tend to be a bit smarter in Japan and so I’ll be taking some slightly dressier shoes. I’m planning on taking one pair of chunky Chelsea boots for the day, one pair of smarter flats for evenings plus some trainers for hiking and running.

ChilliPB · 03/09/2024 20:09

Also not sure your motivations for packing minimally but if you’re concerned about carrying luggage on public transport you may want to look into the easy to use luggage forwarding services.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 03/09/2024 20:11

I hadn't noticed it was Japan OP is going to. The Moonstar pumps I linked to are made in Japan.

Amazonmulu · 03/09/2024 20:17

I wear my Air Force 1s during day or night and I've taken them on city breaks. You can dress them up or down. Super versatile.

I don't mean to be unkind but the shoes you linked op are not very fashionable or nice looking. Imho at least!

KirstenBlest · 03/09/2024 21:50

I wouldn't wear them. They aren't stylish. The zip makes them look like they are made for people who can't tie shoelaces. The colour isn't great.
On the plus side, they are leather.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 03/09/2024 21:53

I have something very similar and they are not suitable for doing lots of walking in!

Meadowwild · 03/09/2024 21:56

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 03/09/2024 19:12

These are very comfortable for walking around and I've worn them in the evening

They are very Japanese looking too.

TizerorFizz · 03/09/2024 22:00

@LancsLass1 They are rubber! They won’t breathe! Take a pair of mesh trainers. I’ve taken M&S slip on ones and they squish down to nothing.

In Japan, eating out can be very casual or it’s dressing up and looking expensive. The Japanese can be very smart! Therefore assuming you aren’t really going anywhere that expensive, my other option would be white leather trainers. So many available but ones that go with dresses or jeans are great. Make sure they are ultra comfortable. I actually like the Clark’s version but DDs are now into Adidas. Gazelles or Stan Smith. Just get something breathable and comfortable. There are trains and buses in Japan! Plus luggage forwarding! Have a great time though.

YellowphantGrey · 03/09/2024 22:00

They look like they are lacking in any sort of support for walking.

Why not invest in a proper pair of walking trainers then take a dressier shoe for going out? You can wear the heavier pair for travelling in.
