Please judge my clothing sense

Okay, I'm well aware I am opening myself up to some right nasty comments and I will take them on the chin.

I'm 25, five foot four and 19 stone and a few extra pounds. I am what you could describe as absolutely massive. I'm on Mounjaro and losing weight, but I have no idea how to dress myself.

Winter is trousers and a jumper. Summer is floaty dresses. Autumn and spring are the dresses plus a cardigan.

I've just done a Shein shop as I have no autumn/winter clothes, I've lost 2/3 stone since last autumn and nothing fits right, it's all too big. Add to these items two pairs of trousers - one neutral and one black, and that's pretty much my wardrobe for the next six months. Hopefully by the end of the season I'll be needing a new spring/summer wardrobe.

Am I actually horrendous at dressing myself?? Where can I improve?? Please help 😅

How about Primark? I found it brilliant when I was losing and didn't want to spend much (I'm similar height 5'5 and was 17st at my biggest).
I mostly got my stuff from there or used Amazon for some basics as they are also pretty good.

But I also did treat myself to some more expensive bits as treats along the way....in fact i have rebought a couple of things i loved in smaller sizes! So if you really love something don't feel you have to wait until you hit a certain goal.

Have to say though that my shoe size didn't change! I went up from a 6 to a 7 when I put weight on and I never went back down! 😂

Don't buy Shein. Not only because they are a sweatshop employing children but also because the clothes are ugly and flammable.
If on a budget try Tu. Lots of nice dresses and tops in cotton. Or Vinted.

Please listen to this. Primark/Tu all better than Shein. They literally use kids to make their clothes. It’s horrific.

Your fashion sense is good!

@ChilliPB I understand that and I am aware that Shein is by no means ideal to get clothing.

However, as I have explained, I'm losing weight at a pretty decent weight and I need cheap clothing. I understand that vinted is an option but it's a lot harder to build a capsule wardrobe from there.

I don't need the judgment.

I'm sure that's a great comfort to the children being exploited in Shein warehouses. But at least it's easier than Vinted, I guess.

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 03/09/2024 20:11

@wintersgold you're typing that on a smartphone/laptop/tablet thats been made in the same way. I don't have the financial means to buy ethical clothing but, unfortunately, I need to wear clothes to work

I am far from perfect, but as a baseline I do not buy from brands like Shein where there are ethical alternatives - Vinted - available. That is basic humanity.

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 03/09/2024 20:33

@wintersgold 99% of stuff on vinted these days is the same fast fashion, it's no more ethical to buy it, wear it three times then sell it

Don't get the blanket stich item - the rest look good.

I'd follow a plus size instgramer. They share lots of body positive stuff and show how to wear something and what's in.

KirstenBlest · 03/09/2024 20:38

@NeedSomeAnswersPlease , you seem to be such a lovely person. Thanks for being nice. Flowers

I'm just entering my potato sack era (it will be sent back)

I second going into a shop, preferably with a fun friend who will be helpful and honest, and trying on things until you discover what works for you.

Try on shapes and colours you normally wouldn't and you might be really pleasantly surprised. I love the skirts but I agree with PP that wearing them with more fitted tops would look great.

In general highlighting the parts of your body you'd like to show off. Plan to have fun and walk out with a stronger sense of what works for you.

TheBossOfMe · 03/09/2024 21:01

Yes agree that the jumper should go back and maybe check how flattering the satin skirt looks from both front and back (might cling a bit to a tummy and larger butt!). But you have good taste and a sense of style.

Yes thinking the satin skirt may have been a mistake; however hopefully the mounajro works and it'll look good around Christmas time!

Except it is absolutely more ethical. The product already exists, it will either go to landfill or be used again. Buying from Vinted is the moral and sustainable choice - you aren't contributing to the problem, instead you're extending the item's lifetime

NoNonsenseNina · 03/09/2024 22:10

I just jumped on here to say that you are hilarious and I love your disposition. And I hope your weight loss journey goes well for you!

@wintersgold okay. We clearly have different views on this, I understand that sometimes needs must.

I’d question the ethics of buying from Shein. There really is no justification for it.

Well done on the weight loss.

I have the Birkenstock version of the clogs and I love them.

NeedSomeAnswersPlease · 03/09/2024 15:40

Didn't realise I can only post three pics at a time, sorry!

I’m pretty sure I have this leopard print skirt from shein, it’s very elasticated at the waist and after reading the reviews I bought it in the size smaller - then you’ll get to wear it a bit more as you slim down.

Also, I’d highly recommend the shein plus size tights as they honestly for size 16-24 they’re the stretchiest comfiest tights I’ve ever owned because the skirts you’ve picked will be thin fabric (the leopard one is really thin) and you may need something underneath them.

And ignore the people making comments about ordering from shein 🙄 not everyone has got £100’s to spend on clothes at a time, especially if you don’t know how long you’ll fit in them for.

I think you’ve got a neutral pallet which is a good idea to do a good deal of mix and matching.

Lastly - if you haven’t already - put the bits you’ve outgrown on vinted - you might find you make enough money to cover half of your order 🥰

When you have the money to be able to shop around, and you're slim enough to not only have a handful of shops who cater to your body size, then sure.

@Littleme2023 their sizing can be questionable but they're the only place I've found who continue to have nice clothing in my size!

It’s time consuming but read all the reviews, they’ll give you a guide on how that particular item “comes up” if you see what I mean xx

Yes, turn a blind eye because you want cheap and disposable fashion. Even if you care not a jot about the underpaid and exploited workers, nor the ‘help me’ messages found in the labels of their clothes, perhaps you could think about the fact items of their clothing have been found to contain carcinogenic substances hundreds of times over the legal limit? Hey? As long as it’s cheap. Who cares?

Look, I get it. I really do.

But I'm on minimum wage. I'm losing weight. I don't have £100s to spend on clothes from the expensive ethical companies. I don't fit in Primark clothes. That's how big I let myself get.

I've limited what I've bought, I'm not out here buying £500 hauls just for content. I've got myself a little capsule wardrobe for work and I will wear them till they either fall apart or fall off me. I don't know why you feel the need to judge that. I already feel pretty horrific about myself, but unfortunately I need to go to work so I can continue to pay for my Mounjaro. And to go to work, I need clothes.

They all do!

Instead of that heinous brown sack jumper, wouldn't you rather spend just £17 more and buy something in quality wool from Uniqlo? Will fit into your small capsule.
