Plus sized teacher clothes

Hello
I’m Struggling to find non flowery non midi/maxi dresses for work! Please help! Ideally I would wear trousers, a long top/jumper to cover the C-section overhang with nice trainers (work in sen so have to run!) but I can never find trousers big enough for the overhand that don’t hang off my thighs. I’m a size 22 in order to get clothes to fit my stomach but the rest of me would be about an 18 though I can’t wear shirt dresses as boobs too big!

I’m happy to wear shorter dresses with snag tights but getting a bit bogged down with having to wear frumpy cardigans as well to cover the rolls on fat at the back.

longer dresses which seem to be flowery in plus size just feel like too much jazzy material.

i am 46, in a management teacher but can be causal due to the type of students we have.

can anyone help?

Does it have to be dresses? I’m currently loving various jumpsuits, a Roake one with a wrap top from Vinted, a Lucy & Yak one, and an Om Baby one- again a wrap top one, but they also make normal jumpsuits. Vinted have them from time to time (L&Y frequently). They’re super easy, practical, and flattering.

I’ve never really known how to wear them if that’s makes sense and also feel they would be highlighting my stomach?

I wear Fatface Simone dresses - I have about eight. They are all made from jersey, so no ironing, natural fabrics, and have BIG pockets. The prints vary so much I don’t think it’s obvious that they are all the same basic design. The largest size they come in is 24.

I bought some from EBay, seconds, probably, but I’ve not found any faults, and some from the sale section on the FatFace website where my best bargain was £10. I wear the regular length with leggings, and longer length ones with tights. The sleeves are a bit short on the regular ones so I prefer longer ones to hide my fat arms.

I have a couple of pairs of trousers from The Official Factory store - they're a heavy cotton, but very elasticated and stretchy, I have wide calves, the trousers are straight and narrow cut, but they don't cling around my calves. I think they were around £20. they have an elasticated waist so very flat at the front if you're wearing them under a dress or long top. Very flattering. The label on them says "Classic" is the brand.

After much searching I recently bought a long plain T shirt dress from Matalan - v cheap, but don't look it, esp if you wear with a nice Jacket. Mine's navy, there were other colours, I think black & khaki, possibly cream.

If you like Snag tights why not try some of their clothing? The dresses and pinafores are good for work. Source- own experience as a teacher who wears Snag dresses.

Have you considered Evans?? I’ve had clothes from lots of these other suggestions over the years, but buying clothes that were designed for plus size bodies (rather than scaled up from a size 6) means that they fit SO much better!

But Evans is polyester central. I seem to have much more joy getting natural fibre stuff from Yours, even though they seem to be Evans' parent brand these days.

@OohCrumbs I wore Phase Eight and Monsoon. The head teacher of my infant school wore Armani suits in the 90s! Teachers aren't a monolith after all. You have been very kind coming up with multiple suggestions for the OP :).

I was just thinking the same. In fact @OohCrumbs I think you have excellent taste! Nice the see someone suggesting something different

I know what you mean, but I carry my weight on my belly (and boobs) and these shapes do work well for me. Lucy and Yak have shops so maybe you could go and have a try-on of different styles? The one I have from there is the Ragan, it’s zip up and has a collar so it can look quite smart. They do various patterns and also plain colours including black, and blue denim.

i get the not quite knowing how to wear them- I find looking at lots of pictures helps me to get it into my head. And I started with plain dark, which also helped.
Also with these brands, they are really popular on Vinted so if you try one and it ends up not working for you, you can re-sell it (or back to Roake and L&Y for their reworked sections) which makes it a bit less risky.

blahblahblah24 · 02/09/2024 09:33

Popsy isn't so bad now, they have plainer patterns and non patterns and less sweaty material options including cotton. A bit on the pricey side.

cantlosebabyweight · 02/09/2024 11:46

Not a teacher but with size 16-18 with C-section overhang and slimmer legs.
Bought M&S trousers with elasticated waist, both wide leg and flared, size 14. Perfect!

TheSquareMile · 02/09/2024 11:52

@Happyhappymeee

Would some of the Gudrun Sjoden dresses be suitable, OP? Some of them are floral, but others are plainer in design.

Be careful if buying from Gudrun Sjoden. If you need to return anything it has to go back to Sweden, which costs £7 per order.

MiddleAgedDread · 02/09/2024 12:44

Seasalt? A bit "tamer" than popsy and they do tunics which might work with thick leggings.

Further evidence that Popsy is basically a cult: when someone is still desperately recommending them because 'Popsy isn't so bad now' - even though they're still overpriced 🙄😂

I wouldn't say I was "desperately recommending" them.

lobeydosser · 03/09/2024 01:40

Another vote for Kit and Caboodle. The good thing about them is that they are one size from 8 to 18 and they just seem to skim the stomach. Plus they're often linen or a cotton/viscose mix so not too sweaty. Bright cheerful colours and swirls rather than flowers. For some reason I can't link but when I had a very quick glance just now they had clearance tops for £14 - Roberta and Faye.
PS I think jumpsuits can work but they're such a pain to get in and out of especially when toilet breaks are so short/non-existent😉

I like the Cider trousers. I’d pair those (or some stretchy flared yoga pants) with a tunic top. Try Live Unlimited or Seasalt, or M & S. I don’t get the love for Popsy, sweaty polyester, ugh.

I got these from M&S in a 20 regular. I'm an 18/20 up top but a size 22 waist. (My backside takes a 20. If I wear a 22, trousers slip on me.) I have a 31 inch inside leg. (I think the model must be wearing the long length, looking at the way they wrinkle at the bottom on her. The regular works fine with me.)

I wear them with loose tops.

I am the same proportions and size as you OP and find H&M linen trousers with elastic waist comfortable and flattering (with a long top to cover mid section overhang).
They are tailored enough when worn with more structured tops and blazer. If ordering online try an XXL. I am hopeful they have a winter equivalent.

I found this rather wonderful top in Asda - so comfortable and flattering I'm going back for all the colours! direct.asda.com/george/women/shirts-blouses/slate-blue-longline-utility-roll-sleeve-shirt/GEM1140869,default,pd.html?cgid=D1M1G20C4

Thanks everyone. After a very hot (thanks peri menopause!) and uncomfortable couple of TD days pulling at my clothes and feeling awkward I am waiting excitedly for all my deliveries to arrive! Have ordered from TU, George, next as well as M&S and things from vinted (plus too many pairs of new trainers as they don’t need to ‘fit’ haha). Thanks for the popsy love but I have stayed away from the prints.
I shall update when they arrive. Hope the start of term has gone well
for all my fellow teachers out there. Off to bed now after zero sleep on Sunday and last night from those ‘back to school’ nerves 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

What are your views on corduroy? Here’s a shorter one.

I have these trousers from Joanie in a jazzy print but they also do them in black and they are incredibly comfy/stretchy/forgiving. They’re great just with a plain t-shirt.

Oooh love this! Must order x
