Plus sized teacher clothes

Hello
I’m Struggling to find non flowery non midi/maxi dresses for work! Please help! Ideally I would wear trousers, a long top/jumper to cover the C-section overhang with nice trainers (work in sen so have to run!) but I can never find trousers big enough for the overhand that don’t hang off my thighs. I’m a size 22 in order to get clothes to fit my stomach but the rest of me would be about an 18 though I can’t wear shirt dresses as boobs too big!

I’m happy to wear shorter dresses with snag tights but getting a bit bogged down with having to wear frumpy cardigans as well to cover the rolls on fat at the back.

longer dresses which seem to be flowery in plus size just feel like too much jazzy material.

i am 46, in a management teacher but can be causal due to the type of students we have.

can anyone help?

Size 20 teacher here. I can't wear trousers due to my shape so always go for dresses. The last few winters I've had dresses from Roman and then in the summer I've had some from seasalt (expensive though).

This one works well for me in winter. www.roman.co.uk/a-line-pocket-detail-swing-dress-14125331 It is available in a few colours.

I also have some that are another swing style dress from Roman but there aren't any in stock in larger sizes at the moment. Hopefully they will be back in stock soon.

Vinted is your answer! My teacher's wardrobe is huge because of it! 😬

Same size and job as you and I get the majority of my work clothes in Tesco. They do long sleeve jersey dresses that can be worn with runners or tights and ankle boots.

I'll be lambasted for this but I also buy from Shein Curve for work .

My plus sized DD loves shein and fair enough it allows her to enjoy fashion

Gawjus · 31/08/2024 23:13

What's wrong with Yours? I had a look on there today and they have got loads and loads of plain skirts and jackets and tops and trousers.

OohCrumbs · 31/08/2024 23:32

@planAplanB oh okay, didn’t think it would be so hilarious

NightOwlGirl · 01/09/2024 01:38

Black leggings with patterned or printed wrap tops and a cardigan have been the foundation of my working wardrobe for 10 years and I doubt I'll change. Try Seasalt clothing they have some nice plus size dresses and tops , otherwise Next have some nice pieces (their plus size options tend to be online only. Likewise M&S online is also good for knitwear.

Wilfrida1 · 01/09/2024 06:38

Would it be worth getting say 3 pairs of trousers made? That may cost a bit, but they will fit properly and make you feel fab.

Longer tops can then be bought far more cheaply and easily to go with them.

And have you considered buying maternity trousers? They may fit your shape better. As a fellow C section overhang woman, I hear you!

JanetSnakeholeMacklin · 01/09/2024 06:45

M&S are quite good for trousers etc. I also really like seasalt. Try one of their cresting waves dresses with a 3/4 sleeve plain white or black top underneath.

Happycow · 01/09/2024 07:13

Have a look at Sugarhill Brighton. They have good sales, but also check Vinted. Lots of patterns, but not at all flowery.

I'd go for a mini dress with leggings / tights. I am big boobed and find their styles generously cut so I would think you wouldn't need a cardigan too for 'back coverage'.

Otherwise, some seasalt tunic tops again from Vinted I think could work well. They are cut nicely so you might be comfortable enough without a cardigan.

Would you consider a shirt dress with a vest top underneath for coverage, so you can leave the 'boob buttons' undone? I've done this a few times. Next do loads of colours of vests - thin and wide straps - to match or contrast whatever dress you have.

Look at This Is Unfolded

And their big bust range too.

They do lots of dresses and their Lana trousers are v popular

FrenchFancie · 01/09/2024 07:35

I just got some smart jersey trousers from M&S in navy and black which stretch over my size 20 hips and tum but don’t flap about my legs like a trip hazard when dealing with small people.

i get a lot of seasalt / wired fish / white stuff long tunic tops from Vinted but am picky about prints / colours so that I don’t look like a pair of curtains. I also mind less when they get damaged / pulled if I’ve only spent £10 not £50.

footwear is a bit of a bigger, we’ve just been told we aren’t allowed to wear trainers any more which, working in KS1 with a runner, will be an issue.

deeahgwitch · 01/09/2024 07:59

Try Kit and Kaboodal @Happyhappymeee they have lovely dresses and tunic tops.
I bought a couple in the summer.
I heard about Kit and Kaboodal on Mumsnet.
M&S had great dresses in the summer so their Autumn - Winter offering will be as good, hopefully.

Gertrudetheadelie · 01/09/2024 08:12

@OohCrumbs I wore Phase Eight and Monsoon. The head teacher of my infant school wore Armani suits in the 90s! Teachers aren't a monolith after all. You have been very kind coming up with multiple suggestions for the OP :).

WonderingWanda · 01/09/2024 08:14

Cider do plus sized trousers. If you put your measurements in it will suggest the best size for each item too. Don't be disheartened they are on the small side so it often suggests sizing up.

TerrifiedandWorried · 01/09/2024 08:18

I always feel like a sofa if I'm wearing print

YouWouldntKnowWhatIMean · 01/09/2024 08:21

@planAplanB of course we do! I'm a teacher and I love Phase Eight. I have lots of nice work dresses from there.

OctogenarianDecathlete · 01/09/2024 08:32

OP, you're a different shape to me, but have you tried men's trousers?

I find they often fit better than women's (and the pockets are phenomenal)

savoycabbage · 01/09/2024 08:36

I wear Phase Eight any I work in EYFS and KS1. I get all my teacher clothes in sales as I am sure most of us do.

IWantedThereThereButItsGone · 01/09/2024 08:38

Can’t believe some of the recommendations here … Hmm

One or two people have mentioned maternity wear - which leads on to my suggestion of:

Beyond Nine

I’ve linked a (midi) dress because you’re looking for a dress - but I’d urge you to have a look at their plain trousers (particularly the cords which will be released from this evening). The clothes are not just for maternity, they’re especially relevant to women with exactly your shape issues. Browse everything, with an open mind, and, if they’re over budget, maybe consider searching them out on pre-owned sites. Because I’m not sure very cheap / poor quality clothing will do you any favours.

ChristmasLightsLover · 01/09/2024 08:44

Seasalt, but buy from Vinted as it can be pricey!

bridgetreilly · 01/09/2024 09:17

I would definitely recommend Sainsbury’s. I am a similar shape and find that they are very good value for pretty good quality and excellent for both work and casual.
