Plus sized teacher clothes

Hello
I’m Struggling to find non flowery non midi/maxi dresses for work! Please help! Ideally I would wear trousers, a long top/jumper to cover the C-section overhang with nice trainers (work in sen so have to run!) but I can never find trousers big enough for the overhand that don’t hang off my thighs. I’m a size 22 in order to get clothes to fit my stomach but the rest of me would be about an 18 though I can’t wear shirt dresses as boobs too big!

I’m happy to wear shorter dresses with snag tights but getting a bit bogged down with having to wear frumpy cardigans as well to cover the rolls on fat at the back.

longer dresses which seem to be flowery in plus size just feel like too much jazzy material.

i am 46, in a management teacher but can be causal due to the type of students we have.

can anyone help?

Ha teachers don't wear Monsoon and Phase Eight....! Hahaha

I do! Definitely preferable to the dreaded Popsy so many posters have suggested.

LaNameChange · 01/09/2024 09:38

I've had some success with a site called Taking Shape for trousers that someone recommended on here. I have a similar shape to you and trousers are a nightmare for me. I have one pair from Paul Costello which were new but from Vinted, and a pair of Boden ones which I had to get tailored to fit.

Another one who can't believe some of the advice you've had on here!

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 01/09/2024 10:25

I really like that Phase Eight Mina dress upthread, and it’s on sale!

Cakewineorgin · 01/09/2024 10:51

I’m a similar size/shape and do the same job as you. I find magic trousers with long tops and leggings with dresses most practical. Most of my wardrobe now comes from Vinted so I don’t mind so much when they get stretched/torn by someone in crisis. I may not look the most stylish but I do look smart.

whalesonthebus · 01/09/2024 12:27

I was size 22 for a long time, and would generally wear smart casual to work. I’m on my feet a lot so needed stuff that looks ok from all angles! I’m hour glass with tummy overhang.

I found most jersey dresses unflattering - they highlighted my C-section apron and enhanced my back fat. Even loose ones seem to cling around the tummy. I tend to go for bottoms similar to magic trousers - the better ones are a nice shape around the thighs but with loads of waist room/space for overhang. There’s loads of slim fitting cargo pants with elasticated waists about. I quite like jersey jackets, they are really comfortable but look smart.

M&S seem to have loads of great dresses at the moment.

catin8oots · 01/09/2024 12:30

I know it's a frowned on site because of their ethics but I have bought so many lovely flattering maxi dresses from Shein.

Not a teacher but similarish role. Size 16.

I think you'll find the SLT pair them nicely with a hi-vis waistcoat 😉😂

JanetSnakeholeMacklin · 01/09/2024 13:27

I had never heard of popsy before and I've just looked after this thread. They look awful! Those prints!! 🙈 (Sorry!)

Evvyjb · 01/09/2024 13:35

I love seasalt for the summer, supermarket trousers (Asda is GREAT) and a few blouses/longline shirts - I rate H&M plus. I also really like Lucy + Yak Alexa trousers (in black). A couple of monsoon heavyweight jersey dresses. Blazer lives on the hook in my office for meetings (SLT).

Clarks loafers. DM boots/shoes. Couple of pairs of menorcan sandals for the summer (closed toe!).

I do! I just buy it off ebay/vinted...

Cherrysoup · 01/09/2024 13:57

I found South great when I was your size, variety of leg lengths, material that wouldn’t stain easily, was comfy, had enough material for an overhang. Evans was also great but I’m keen to try on and obviously they no longer have physical shops (at least not that I could find)

I’m another who can’t bear the cutesy Popsy stuff.

Happyhappymeee · 01/09/2024 14:08

Thanks all - I have a big order arriving from various places this week (not from popsy but thanks for the reccomendation anyway). One poster said how they feel like a sofa in these big print dresses - that made me laugh as I always say I feel like a set of curtains!

I also found some black slim trousers in Matalan yesterday. I almost didn’t try them as I just didn’t want to despair but their size 20 fitted really well. Now to find some long tops to wear with them.
thanks again

Enjoy your new clothes, @Happyhappymeee!

I'm not a teacher, but I'm a GP so probably aspire to a similar vibe - fairly smart and presentable but comfy and functional. Until recently I was a size 20-22 and I got a lot of my work trousers from M&S - they have a range which are about £19 per pair which have an elasticated waist, and I found I fitted into a size 20 so could try them on in our local M&S store. For tops, I'd go onto Vinted and filter by size - you can search by brand, and you will indeed be able to afford Monsoon and Phase Eight, and plenty of other decent brands, if you're happy to buy second-hand. I used to find Fat Face and White Stuff good, but as I got older my tastes changed a bit.

I've now lost a fair amount of weight and am shopping for size 14-16 clothes on Vinted instead 🙂

I wouldn't touch Popsy with a bargepole for various reasons - most of the prints aren't my cup of tea; the quality is reportedly poor (my friends who have bought their dresses complain about bobbling); and they're very popular amongst a certain demographic, so you risk looking exactly the same as everybody else (they were very popular amongst doctors a couple of years ago). I also struggle with the ethics of the frequent releases/release day hype - it feels like it drives consumerism and fast fashion.

YouWouldntKnowWhatIMean · 01/09/2024 08:21

@planAplanB of course we do! I'm a teacher and I love Phase Eight. I have lots of nice work dresses from there.

I just meant that the clothes are way too nice to be a) wasted at work b) drooled on by children c) covered in glue, glitter and paint.

Petesdragoness · 01/09/2024 16:01

Another vote for shein, I get so much from there and if bought correctly, ive had stuff last me a year or so and I rewear some dresses weekly.

Im a busty 18 with a c section belly/overhang so a bit smaller in size but also short so it shows more.

I love this style of dress, with the type collar and then tiered bottoms, are really comfy and flattering goes well with trainers or boots for winter.

Ive also started wearing smart leggings at work (smart casual, none trainer but smart office environment) because they look nice with long shirts. I got these from Asda and look really nice and are really comfy on my stomach. There's only a 24 left online but could be some in store?

I didn't read the thread title or OP properly and missed out on the teacher bit 🙄 Apologies @
But my suggestion of Kit and Kaboodal still stands @Happyhappymeee

Caroline Donnelly The Edit does nice dresses too

itsgettingweird · 01/09/2024 18:33

Also work in sen Ed.

I'm pastoral/ head of behaviour.

So either sat at computer or going to support a pupil or doing first aid - I can need to run at times 😂 and yes to being spat at or grabbed or someone trying to hit and extremely occasionally there is need for RPI.

I find jersey dresses with pockets the easiest - smart but casual. Can wear with trainers in the summer (cycle shorts underneath) and in the winter I team with leggings and boots.

I find as well the style helps whatever your body shape too.

With the added bonus stretch means if someone grabs me and I need to get away the clothes don't rip!

notbelieved · 01/09/2024 18:34

Have a look at Roman Curve - well sized, good prices. I buy loads for work from them.

deeahgwitch · 01/09/2024 19:35

Where do you get your jersey dresses @itsgettingweird ?

AlertCat · 01/09/2024 20:09

Does it have to be dresses? I’m currently loving various jumpsuits, a Roake one with a wrap top from Vinted, a Lucy & Yak one, and an Om Baby one- again a wrap top one, but they also make normal jumpsuits. Vinted have them from time to time (L&Y frequently). They’re super easy, practical, and flattering.

Kaybee50 · 01/09/2024 21:13

Get yourself some Lucy & Yak Alexa trousers! They are the best trousers and are so comfy. They can be dressed up or down and look great with trainers.

Why is the dreaded popsy always recommended 🤢

Quite. Sweaty and poor quality for the price.

Thistooshallpass24 · 01/09/2024 21:41

Popsy dresses smell like the gym changing room 🤢 weird sweaty synthetic

TMIteen · 01/09/2024 22:00

I sound like I’m the same shape as you! Glad you’ve found trousers - that’s a feat in itself. I found the m and s jersey workwear trousers (about £19) perfect as they are slim fitting and stretchy so don’t hang off my pouch!
For tops to wear with trousers, I love Roman. Only found it last year and they are perfect to go over trousers. Hide your bum and overhang but are flattering and smart.
