I’m thinking of buying one for my birthday but I don’t know whether I’m wasting my money. I might like to take a call or two on it, but I don’t want emails to come through as I wouldn’t have a life if so. I’m really keen on health stuff, like steps, calories burned, heart measure etc, but is there any other reason why you like yours? Thanks a lot

I have one but I only use it for the health. I don’t have alerts setup for WhatsApp/emails etc and I don’t pay for the one that comes with data/a contract.

I find it really motivating in terms of the exercise aspects. I am also really bad with tech but I find this really easy to use!

i ended up choosing this one over a garmin largely for aesthetic reasons, but I love it!

Ilovecashews · 29/08/2024 07:16

Can I please ask you which strap do you have and if you like it? I’m tempted by the
more plasticky ones but I wonder if they are uncomfortable in high temperatures.

I like mine, but could also easily be without it. Handy for calls, I like the alarm too. Also find the heart rate / exercise aspect useful.
i have the the fabric strap.

EternallyDelighted · 29/08/2024 07:27

I have the silicone strap and it's fine in all weathers (and for swimming in).

I use it for exercise, the timer, seeing messages (not email), taking a call if I've left my phone somewhere else in the building, apple pay (saves getting your phone out), navigation on foot using the maps app (so you don't have to walk round towns and cities with your phone out), controlling audio content when I'm listening on my airpods. Wouldn't be without it. You can customise what you see and don't see with it using the watch phone app.

I have the fabric type strap.its adjustable but it's all one loop so also makes me comfortable I won't loose it!

They also do some fabric ones now that are a single band but I am not sure I would get in with them as surely they stretch and get loose over time.

I got a plasticy one but I found it irritated the skin on my wrist as if water got under it when washing hands etc it just sat there and didn't dry.

TeaMeBasil · 29/08/2024 07:31

Love mine and use it for the health & steps monitoring, alarm, weather. Handy for the odd text but don't do emails on it at all.

I didn't like the strap so got a regular thin leather one off either Amazon or Etsy.

Blueuggboots · 29/08/2024 07:40

I bought a metal magnetic strap that I love!! Very comfortable.

Blueuggboots · 29/08/2024 07:40

And I use mine mainly for the health aspect.

IBlameTheDog · 29/08/2024 07:53

Love mine. The sleep tracker has been improved recently so that's useful. I also like seeing my resting heart rate. It's amazing how it spikes when you're ill!

I really really like that I get discreet notifications of text messages so when I'm at work I can easily check if it's one of the DC. I don't have emails coming through on it.

Fave thing is the phone finder. You know that feeling when you're not sure if you've picked your phone up? Just press the button and your phone beeps loudly so you know if it's in your handbag/car etc. or where it is in the house!!

Clearinguptheclutter · 29/08/2024 08:08

I adore mine and it’s a very old and comparatively crappy one (s3 which you can’t get any more).
i still just use the white strap it came with. Never had any issues.
i do like the notifications but you can control what you do and don’t get. Main pluses for me are the fitness app- which talks to Strava so I get lots of data etc on my running, and Apple Pay.

Clearinguptheclutter · 29/08/2024 08:08

Oh an yy to the phone finder feature. I use that all the time!

purplehue · 29/08/2024 08:11

I have one and love it. I couldn't wear the apple strap as the metal caused a reaction with my skin so I order cheap straps from eBay.

purplehue · 29/08/2024 08:12

Fabric straps. £5 each

Since mine updated I can no longer find that function to make my phone beep so I can find where I left it! I used to be able to swipe down or up (can’t remember which) and it had the icon there to alarm my phone but it’s gone now!

I like mine, used to have one with a fabric strap but replaced the watch as I thought the battery was dying (turned out it wasn’t! Donated the watch to dd1) and now have one with the silicone type band. Mainly use it for tracking stats on my swims, spins and steps.
Has useful features like being able to skip through music and alerts me if I get a message or phone call but you can pretty much customise all kinds of alerts. I don’t get email alerts on mine. Also like the photos on the watch face.

sleepyscientist · 29/08/2024 08:34

@TheChosenTwo double press the button below the crown on the side and ping my phones comes up. I use mine to control music, as a Fitbit replacement and have WhatsApp etc coming through so I dont need to pull my phone out unless I want to reply

I have the silicone one, but I also bought another metal-y one from Amazon.

only issue with the silicone one is that I find it falls off quite easily.

Same 🤣🤣 this has saved hours of wasted time looking for my bloody phone!! 🤦‍♀️

WithIcePlease · 29/08/2024 08:59

Love my Apple Watch.

I find the exercise features really motivating - as does DH - so we'll go for walks if we think our steps are up to par.

I record all my gym sessions - I like to look at heart rate in my sessions both during and afterwards.

My favourite thing is that walks/runs/hikes are shown on a map! Really nice to look back at where you have walked esp on holidays etc

I don't get email notifications. I also like to see who is ringing - especially in winter! Glancing at watch is so much easier than taking off gloves and having to furtle about for a phone if I'm in a big coat/lots of layers

Apple Pay good and pinging phone to find it is so handy.

Silicone strap if fine for me

Christmasdreaming · 29/08/2024 09:01

Apple usually release the new Watch & iPhone early September so I would wait a couple of weeks to order as it’s often the same price as last years

Solonga · 29/08/2024 09:09

I use mine for the steps and activity, check my heart that I'm not dying but most of all it opens my iMac without me bothering with typing in the password, though some of the newer iMacs and MacBooks may have a fingerprint entry so this watch feature perhaps wouldn't be needed. I also find it useful for taking phone calls, only DH and DS ever ring me so not inconvenient.

WalkingaroundJardine · 29/08/2024 09:21

You can control what notifications you get. I don’t get emails but do get WhatsApp, Messenger etc and I like that I can quickly reply by speaking into the microphone without stopping what I am doing or having to get my phone. One time I locked myself out in the back garden and was able to dictate a message to get a family member to open the door.

It’s great for travelling on transport systems which take credit cards - very convenient as you don’t even have to double click the pay button for that.

TorturedParentsDepartment · 29/08/2024 09:32

I tend to react to the silicone Apple uses (I'm also the same with AirPods Pro tips) so I swapped the strap for a range of internet cheapies. You set up whatever notifications you want to come up on it, and I have the sounds on it turned off so it's just a Taptic alert on my wrist.

I find I can't wear any watches over the very hot periods of weather, but I do use it most of the year apart from that - I've got ridiculously sensitive skin.

Twilightstarbright · 29/08/2024 09:59

I love mine- especially at work as I can see if I get an urgent call (school/nursery) but not need my personal phone on meetings. I. Have a plastic strap and it’s comfortable but I have a fabric one too.

MsJuniper · 29/08/2024 10:03

I was surprised that you can't have steps on the watch face - instead it's activity rings. I quite like to know my steps at a glance.

I like the reminders to stand/move and the timers which I use a lot for work. I've used it for Apple Pay a couple of times and answered a few calls.

The absolute best feature is Find My iPhone which I use multiple times a day.

ItMustBeBedtimeSurely · 29/08/2024 10:06

The battery is shite. I’m a runner and have replaced mine with a garmin for this reason alone. May be less of an issue if you’re not doing long runs etc - but even on a long walk you have to make sure you have full battery, a day hike will drain it.
