I’m thinking of buying one for my birthday but I don’t know whether I’m wasting my money. I might like to take a call or two on it, but I don’t want emails to come through as I wouldn’t have a life if so. I’m really keen on health stuff, like steps, calories burned, heart measure etc, but is there any other reason why you like yours? Thanks a lot

I use mine for everything and yes I do have my step count on the watch face.

Did you need to install a pedometer app, because I can't find a way to do it from activity.

westisbest1982 · 30/08/2024 23:27

My series 8 watch syncs seamlessly with my iPhone 12 and my new MacBook, and I love paying for stuff with it via Apple Pay and not having to faff around with my phone. The fitness features are superb as well and it's handy when it unlocks my iPhone and Mac. But if I didn't have other Apple stuff I probably wouldn't bother with an Apple Watch and would get a cheaper smartwatch instead, like a Samsung Smartwatch Galaxy Watch 6.

ErrolTheDragon · 31/08/2024 00:11

I really like mine. Bought it with the sports loop strap, don't like the look or feel of the silicone ones at all.
I don't have notifications on for emails or WhatsApp, just texts (but would probably turn that off too if I got too many). We walk a lot and the activity app and the rings are very motivating.

The one thing I don't like is it's crap at working out if I'm standing...I think it actually just detects arm swings so if I'm carrying stuff around the house or cooking etc it's likely to tell me at ten to the hour that it's time I stood up....ffs.

Oh, battery life is important to me so that’s something to consider. Can someone please explain it to me as if I was a child (they probably are way more on top of this stuff than me…)? If I buy a watch and I want it to work independently of my phone, so let’s say I leave the phone at home but I still want to see texts or use maps etc, do I have to get a contract specifically for the phone, or can I link it to my phone O2 contract? Thank you!

I've got a LTE s9, the battery lasts about a day and a half (I have it it on always on display though) I've had several Apple Watches since the s4 and they've never lasted longer. DH has the ultra 2 and that lasts a few days but obviously is more expensive and a lot bigger.

Mine is attached to my o2 contract I pay £7 a month for the airtime part of it.

I was surprised that you can't have steps on the watch face - instead it's activity rings. I quite like to know my steps at a glance.

I like the reminders to stand/move and the timers which I use a lot for work. I've used it for Apple Pay a couple of times and answered a few calls.

The absolute best feature is Find My iPhone which I use multiple times a day.

NRTFT - I have the app Pacer on my phone, and as a complication on my watch. I can see my steps with a glance at my watch face.

EternallyDelighted · 31/08/2024 08:54

Mine is an SE, about 3 years old, the battery lasts 24 hours most days and I charge it overnight (not interested in sleep tracking). But if I do a lot of tracked exercise - more than about 90 mins, the battery doesn't last the day which is annoying.

Also annoying is that I crochet and it counts each stitch as a step because of the arm movements 🤦‍♀️

Re cellular or wifi, mine is wifi only but if I do leave my phone at home when I go to work it acts as if it is cellular because both devices are on known wifi networks. I was really surprised the first time it happened, I got a call despite my phone being 15 miles away.

@DietrichandDiMaggio no you don't need to install anything. It appears automatically. You can use your phone to see how many it thinks you have done.

If you go into the watch app on your phone you can pick the watch faces that have pedometer on/add pedometer to your watch face. Hope that helps 😀

I have one as I'm locked into the Apple ecosystem. I choose what notifications stay on the phone and what come through to the watch. I love how it's linked and I can text back by dictating or spelling out. This can be very convenient.

However, the battery life is pathetic. If I do any exercise it won't last long. There's no way you could track a solid session for its entirety - a half marathon, a long walk or bike ride - forget about it.

If you want to track your sleep, you'll have to take it off to charge before bed and probably again in the morning meaning you aren't tracking as much as you could.

Mine is a series 4 LTE which I purchased in 2019 for £500. If my calculations are correct (unlikely) I've had this 1886 days and without the new battery it has still cost me 26.5 per day - cost per wear! At what point does it become acceptable to buy a new one? I feel I'm there now but it's incredibly outdated and a real watch at that price would last longer. Maybe I'm full of shit tho.

If you get a new one, you’ll find the battery is much better. DH has a 5 and has to charge it before the end of the day as he’s out walking a lot. I upgraded to an 8 and the battery lasts much longer.
I mostly wear the Velcro fastening sport loop bands, though I do have a set of solo loop ones I got on Amazon, but I find I have to make the loop bigger to get it over my hand & then it’s difficult to get it tight enough one-handed for my small wrist.

It all appears in the "Health" app on your phone too as well as "Activity" on your watch

That's the problem -I can't see health or pedometer on any of the watch faces when I look at the face gallery, so there must be something I am missing.

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 01/09/2024 10:28

@DietrichandDiMaggio just taken a look and it may be the faces that you have chosen. It's actually called steps on my faces.

My faces aren't as pretty but have all the info I could ever need. When I then click into it, it shows me steps, distance and how many stairs I've climbed. 100% honesty - it's super easy to confuse so not very accurate. If I get a stand reminder at 10 to, I just wave my arms around and like magic I've stood up.

@RustyBear thanks! I'm so tempted to buy another one and gift this to DD. It's just another unnecessary bill 🫣 or large dip into savings that could be a holiday which is much more fun.

ErrolTheDragon · 01/09/2024 11:02

I've got a few different faces set up, it's quite easy to move between them to get a different display depending on what I'm doing.

What? I have to jog on the spot like an idiot to get it to register a stand.

Just as an example for how poor my watch battery is...

I went to the gym this morning and did 45 mins on the cross trainer and the. Came home and walked the dog less than half a mile. That was between 5.10 when I put the watch on and 7.30 when I got back with the dog. My battery had gone from 100-63%.

I then charged it while in the shower and then got back to about 95% before I went to work. Just got back and have done around 8k steps at work but nothing else apart from music playing in the car (comes up on the screen) and notifications coming through. It now has 26% at 3.30pm. I'm about to clean and by the time I sit down to relax it will be about 10 but I'll update you.

nomud · 04/09/2024 15:33

I love my Apple Watch and wouldn’t be without it. I never read emails on it.

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 04/09/2024 16:59

13% at 5 and although I'm not done cleaning, I just actually can't be arsed.

I got a new one fairly recently, mainly because the battery in the old one was barely lasting the day, especially if logging a long walk.

The new one is so much better - not a very active day today tbf only 7.5K steps so far, but it's at 55% so loads left. And unlike the old one it's got fast charging so it takes as long as a bath.

MoreCardassianThanKardashian · 04/09/2024 20:50

@ErrolTheDragon that's another bloody scam. They bought in this fast charger just as they stopped providing plugs with the products because everyone has them. I have loads of usb plugs. 2 fast plugs! I've been on1% since about 7. A strong 1_%

WeWillGetThereInTheEnd · 08/09/2024 09:42

I have a series 6. It recharges in an hour or so (perhaps less as I never time it), then it keeps going all day.

I have Pacer on my I phone, and I’ve added it as a complication on one of the faces, so I can see at a glance how many steps I’ve done.
