Mulberry bag or something else

So I’ve wanted a mulberry bag since age 18 I’ll finally be in a place to get one this year I’ve been trying to be good and only buy more expensive classic clothes the last few years. I’m now wobbling if I want a mulberry or do I want something else? Any recommendations? Or is my long love of mulberry bags just something I need to buy.

I do love the channel bags but would have to save for another year and can’t decide if they are to insta and that’s why I’m swayed.

Depends what you plan on using it for ☺️ I’m so glad I brought a mulberry as an everyday work bag as it more than gets its use! A few other nice bags I have barely see the light of day 😂

babyproblems · 27/08/2024 20:31

Honestly I wouldn’t buy Mulberry these days. To me it’s a bit has been.. I know they have a cult following but I don’t like the style and just think they’re a bit fuddy duddy now! Chanel would be a better investment and much more timeless but not at all the same price point. You could look at something more current like Polene or strathberry? If you do really love mulberry then go for it but I’d have a good look round first because If you changed your mind I think it wouldn’t resell very well. x

I just want a classic leather cross body that can be dressed up or down without effort, I will look at Polene and Strathberry.
I really like the channel bags, just worry they are to “in”

I want to get it right and feel I’ve had mulberry in my head for 20 years I no longer have a clue.

Which Mulberry bag are you looking at buying. I’ve had a few.

Antony. A great casual crossbody bag. Not heavy and very useable.
Alexa. I have a mini one which isn’t too heavy. I’ve had a medium one previously and it was quite heavy.
Bayswater. I’ve had large and small ones. The large ones which were popular years ago are very heavy, even before you’ve put anything in them.
Darley. A lovely little crossbody bag. You can’t fit much in it so better for night time.
Lily. The chain is painful so I didn’t keep it for long.

It’s still a great brand but the older designs do seem to be nicer. Well worth the money and timeless. I’d definitely recommend them.

Honey and Toast do lovely bags, very affordable (much cheaper than Mulberry) but great quality.

I wanted one for years too, and got one this year. I love using it. Like pp it's an everyday bag.

katystar · 27/08/2024 20:47

Darley and lily are my top choices. I WFH so don’t need to get much in as the kids are teenagers so I don’t have to carry tons of stuff anymore. I also barely go out so when I say dress up i mean more smart casual. I will look at honey and toast.

I’m glad other people have wanted one for years as well.

I've got an 11 year old Bayswater I never use (too heavy and I now have a child and associated crap to carry, plus short commute by car so I barely need a work bag). I will probably never sell it but I suspect I should have bought a Lily instead.

katystar · 27/08/2024 20:54

I also like the Lana I have £1000 saved for a bag or will have by November so want to get myself a Christmas treat.

Aren't they made in China these days,? I'd go for Chanel.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 27/08/2024 21:03

If you’ve wanted a particular bag since you were 18 and finally have saved for it, anything else is going to feel like 2nd best.

get the bag you want. Don’t let anyone else on here (usually who have a whole range of designer bags to chose from so don’t have the emotional attachment to one) put you off getting the one you actually want, just because something else might be a tiny bit better value /quality/stylish.

get the bag you want.

FancyBiscuitsLevel · 27/08/2024 21:07

A similar sized Chanel bag will be about £4k more to save. This isn’t a good “either, or” comparison.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 27/08/2024 21:07

I wanted a mulberry Bayswater for years and years and years, finally had enough spare cash to buy one about 3 yrs ago. I love it. There are other bags of the same price etc etc but I wanted a mulberry! Nothing else would have done, I still would have wanted a mulberry if I'd bought a Chanel.

I also have an Alexa, it's spacious but quite heavy. I'd go for the darley if you can do with something small.

Thistooshallpass24 · 27/08/2024 21:10

Oldschool Mulberry? Yes please, lovely quality leather, proper brass work., new one nope shiny poor quality and slightly tacky in my opinion.
Paula Kirkwood bags are beautiful small business made with love

RickyBobbysKFC · 27/08/2024 21:10

Go for what you love OP. Mulberry is a good classic and Y2K fashion is coming back into fashion.

Surelyitscoffeetime · 27/08/2024 21:13

I’ve got a very old Antony which I joke will see me out. I also have a much newer Bayswater which feels really different. I do think the ones made in China aren’t as soft as the British made ones.

StormingNorman · 27/08/2024 21:19

I bought one of the original Bayswater’s from the 2003 collection. Love it as much today as I did then and they age beautifully.

PinkDreamer · 27/08/2024 21:19

Definitely get the mulberry! I got 4 this year 👀. I wanted a Bayswater since I was 17 was so happy to finally get one this year.

Saurus72 · 27/08/2024 21:37

How about a Chloe Marcie mini? I’ve had a pale grey one for 10 years and I use it all the time (from walks on the beach to really nice restaurants) and it always feels appropriate and I get loads of compliments. You can fit a surprising amount of things, it’s really no fuss but wears very well. I have some Mulberry bags, a Marni and some other decent bags and my Chloe is by far my very favourite. https://www.chloe.com/gb/hand-bag_cod45661714iq.html

FluffBomb · 27/08/2024 21:43

Aspinal?

Guineapiggiesmalls · 27/08/2024 21:51

Go for the Mulberry. It sounds like that’s the one you’ve had in mind when saving. Enjoy!

Also… if you check TK Maxx, search handbags from high to low and you’ll find they usually have the odd one there for about £300 cheaper so you can get more bag for your money.

PottersMarsBars · 27/08/2024 21:54

Check Apatchy. Soft, beautiful leather just like Mulberry without the price tag.

LettyToretto · 27/08/2024 21:55

You won't get a Chanel anything for £1000.

Also, if you want crossbody, don't be fooled by the classic flap. The chain is such an awkward length that when worn crossbody, the bag itself sits awkwardly at your waist.

Isabelle70 · 27/08/2024 22:05

I have a quilted Darley and a Lily and I use the Darley more than the Lily. I find the Lily a bit of a wedding guest bag.
But certainly get the style of bag that you normally like to use. I am a cross body/tote/shoulder bag wearer. I made a few expensive mistakes but purchasing bags I liked the look off but not the right style for me.

BloodyWolves · 28/08/2024 07:29

Hey op! Similar to you I’d wanted a Mulberry bag since my teen years and finally bought one this year (I’m now 31)

I had read that quality wasn’t as good as it had been and they are a bit passed it now. I let it influence my decision and bought a Gucci soho first which I liked a lot but it didn’t get the hankering for a Mulberry out of my system. So based on my experience I’m going to say get the bag you’ve wanted since your teens!

I got the Alexa in Mulberry green and it is beautiful! I bought it in the summer and I feel it’s a bit more of an autumn/winter bag so I’m hoping to get a fair bit of wear out of it now the seasons are changing.

katystar · 28/12/2024 22:40

If anyone is interested the boiler went bang so my bag fund got used up but I got some insurance money back for the costs and bought the small Darley in oak and love it totally worth it.
