Gap are dead! RIP!

I had 10 white tshirts that I bought from them over 5 years ago. Nice and thick. About £8 each.

They have eventually got stained (I'm a messy eater).

I went to order 10 more. Then are now £14. They arrived today and you could spit peas through them. They are also TINY and SHORT.

No wonder they are mail order only now. No-one would ever buy if they could see the quality.

I used to love going to Gap in the late 90s and early 00s. Everything was fun and good quality. I remember their fairisle jumpers, bright scarves, wool-lined denim jackets, fab shirts and quality basics. In their sales they’d reduce and reduce until the item was 90% off, got some brilliant bargains.

I haven’t bought anything from them in years now. Totally uninspiring and what looks to be the same styles every year. I don’t think Gap as it is now is anything to do with the original Gap.

I’ve got a few GAP T-shirts and hoodies that must be more than 8 years old now that I think about it, that are still as good as new, lovely material, so thick, wash really well.

Their pyjamas used to be great too, my ‘go to’ for really good quality basic stuff.

I ordered some bits at Christmas for DS girlfriend and was appalled by the quality and sent it all back.

Yeah they make returns impossible. The online account just keeps logging me out every time I try to select "organise a return".

I used to buy all my t-shirts and other tops from Gap, but over the past few years the quality has got worse and worse. I now buy t-shirts from Uniqlo, good quality and good value.

It's because they're owned by Next! Same with Cath Kidston, Joules etc. Joules used to be really great quality and I was so impressed with my first Joules dress. Now, it's all Viscose which I can't wear and my DD's joules stuff you could rip like paper.

There is a small gap store on Oxford Street as part of a giant Next. I was going to pop in the other day for nostalgia's sake but I'm glad I didn't.

@JMAngel1 I have a sort of uniform. I WFH and live in Scotland so it's gotta be warm and comfortable as well as look tidy for zoom calls. I like to have enough even if I'm behind on laundry. Plus, as I say, the 10 tshirts normally last years.

Doesn't wearing white cause the contrast to go out of whack on zoom calls?

I don't rate the quality of anything bought over by next. Gap, cath kidston, joules, all used to be decent quality but I'd rather buy the old stuff second hand on Vinted than buy new now.

I'm also in Scotland and that is EXACTLY what I wear on a day to day basis!

Not that I've noticed but usually it's only the top part of the tshirt that is showing underneath the jumper.

I can't find a good white t shirt that's thick enough, isn't sewed weird, and isn't too short and washes well! My favourite white t shirt from about 20 years ago was one my ex mil bought me from Mango. All Next clothes are really awful quality now. Would love any suggestions for good quality everyday ones.

I think Uniqlo are the closest replacement for basic and ok quality clothes.

Uniqlo is the new Gap for plain t-shirts, in my opinion.

I've never managed to find a decent replacement for their midrise dead straight jeans or their longline fitted t shirts <sigh>

Gap went to the dogs in recent years and I'm so sad about it. My oldest daughters, who are 22 and 20, had beautiful clothes from there when they were little. And I had a pair of jeans from there that lasted years.

Last thing I bought was a Minnie Mouse coat for dd4. It was lovely but the seam came undone. They were out of stock so couldn't replace it :(

I've still got loads of GAP clothes in my wardrobe but nothing since they disappeared from the high street. Uniqlo has filled the hole they left. Their U T shirts are particularly high quality.

I like the sound of this. My current WFH uniform is a knackered old t shirt, hideous tracksuit bottoms with a hole in them and an ex’s old jumper, also with a hole. Desperately needs updating.

I used to buy so many Gap clothes for my kids when they were small - the cotton for the t-shirts was so much better quality than most of the other more affordable kids' brands. I also noticed that about four or so years ago the quality took a nosedive - not just in fabric but in design too - and I've bought nothing there for years.

For t-shirts, I buy COS now, not as cheap as Gap but the quality is worth it.
