Gap are dead! RIP!

I had 10 white tshirts that I bought from them over 5 years ago. Nice and thick. About £8 each.

They have eventually got stained (I'm a messy eater).

I went to order 10 more. Then are now £14. They arrived today and you could spit peas through them. They are also TINY and SHORT.

No wonder they are mail order only now. No-one would ever buy if they could see the quality.

I miss that "real" Gap did "tall" tops. I'm not that tall, but my height is all in my torso, and I find it difficult to find tops that meet the waist trousers. At one time, pretty much all shirts and Ts from Gap online came in a "Tall" option. I have a big pile of 6 or 7 winter weight long sleeve tops that I bought about 7 years ago that are wonderful and still going strong.

KirstenBlest · 26/08/2024 12:12

I love their jeans and have several pairs. I like Uniqlo for t-shirts.

trainedopossum · 26/08/2024 12:29

I still buy from Gap when I go to the US but only cotton or linen clothes. They still do (as of last year anyway) great lightweight summer dresses and trousers in tall for me and petite for my mum. Some of my best deep v neck tees are Gap, admittedly from a couple of years ago.

Dh also likes Gap tees and shorts but often buys used on eBay so we don't know how old those are.

Enterthewolves · 26/08/2024 12:39

I’m sure someone has mentioned them but Community Clothing - quality is excellent, made in the UK, environmentally aware communityclothing.co.uk/collections/womens-t-shirts-tops/products/womens-short-sleeve-t-shirt-plastic-free-white?variant=47811622338837

DeccaM · 26/08/2024 13:11

I have some nice things from Gap that I bought in the US a couple of months ago, including some lovely cotton/linen trousers, a button-down shirt, a sweatshirt.

Uniqlo have great quality T-shirts. You have to be careful as there are a couple at the same price, but they have a range that is made from really thick quality cotton. I took a trip to Manchester recently so that I could visit their store.

GenAvocadoOnToast · 26/08/2024 16:32

Do Uniqlo t shirts have tags in the back? I can't bear a scratchy tag. Or anything tight around my arms.

And has anybody tried Tu t shirts, like these? https://tuclothing.sainsburys.co.uk/product/tuc144427791

RampantIvy · 26/08/2024 16:35

No tags. Just the Uniqlo logo and size printed on the material.

CatMum10 · 26/08/2024 17:41

I haven't read all of the comments so I'm sorry if anyone has suggested this already. For the price, I think M&S plain tshirts are OK. I don't like cap sleeves and theirs always fit nicely. Looking for recommendations of nice thick shirts too.

I used to buy all my t-shirts and other tops from Gap, but over the past few years the quality has got worse and worse. I now buy t-shirts from Uniqlo, good quality and good value.

Yup same here, was just about to suggest Uniqlo, great quality and reasonable prices for it too.

Next is more like a franchise partner than a true owner. It's a business model Gap have introduced in several markets.

Next don't products clothes. It's still Gap clothing, designed and produced by Gap. It's gone downhill but not because of Next

Yep, it's my understanding that Next sells Gap products in the UK on behalf of Gap. It doesn't make them.

But I do agree - Gap isn't what it was. I still yearn after a khaki trench that I wore until it pretty much fell apart. Always bought Gap jeans ('Long and Lean' in the boot cut days, and then 'Dead Straight') and loved the tees and white shirts.

angela1952 · 26/08/2024 18:00

They used to be great but the t-shirts got smaller and thinner but nor relatively cheaper.

EmmaStone · 26/08/2024 18:05

Echoing PPs, I bought loads of Gap when in the US earlier this year - brilliant cheesecloth shirts, linen Ts, classic vest tips in great colours.

But in the UK, Cos is generally excellent, I've not found a Uniqlo T that works for me (yet), but have had great other things from them. Also worth looking at the men's section in Uniqlo if you're taller than 5'4"!

I went to our local GAP, before it closed down. Even in the sale I almost had a stroke at the till. The outfits I bought for my kids only lasted 3 washes - They faded, the colour run, and they all fell apart.

I will say H&M isn't so bad!

1974devon · 26/08/2024 18:47

Ah Gap used to be so cool. I loved their jeans, gilets (although then we all said body warmer) and coats. Loved it all. I was dead chuffed when I bought a black puffa coat and the assistant told me that Jennifer Saunders had bought the exact same one the day before 😀

I wish there was a kitemark or standard or something for clothes quality. Something that says 'this will last at least fives years of normal wear and wasn't made in a sweatshop'

Harold Wilson, you really WOULD make a fantastic prime minister!!

@RugbyGirl1 thank you for posting that. I've been both wondering what Rapanui quality is like, and looking for a decent scoop neck t-shirt, which must be out of fashion as they are hard to find at the moment. I think you have solved my problem!

No worries, hope you like them as much as I do! I have a couple of their waffle-like thin 'jumpers' too, perfect for layering in our ever changing British weather 😂

Feckedupbundle · 26/08/2024 20:06

Another vote for Community Clothing.
DH buys the majority of his clothes from there and the quality is amazing, and they are made in the UK.
I've never bought from Next,as it isn't my style, but was surprised to hear that the quality has fallen off a cliff. They used to be very hot on it,and baby clothes were tried on actual babies to check things like sizing, position and types of zips, buttons and fastenings, whether seams rubbed ect. Both my DDs were fitting models there for years and the designers used to ask what I thought about the garments they were trying. This was 20 odd years ago though,so I don't know if this still happens.

@GapTshirtsAreShitQualityTheseDays

you could spit peas through them 🤣🤣🤣

Haven’t heard or used that expression for many years, my granny would say that of very poor/bad quality fabric/clothing. I know exactly what you mean.☹️

Tamrastarr · 27/08/2024 10:50

I have Gap sweatshirts that both my DC's wore and now my grandchild is wearing it! The quality used to be great and the prices were good.

Was your granny from Glasgow by any chance?!

Thanks Donnor, those do look thick. I like the idea of using the search term "heavyweight"

I like Banana Republic (awful name) also owned by Gap/Next but their clothes are so expensive.
