Italian wedding

I have a wedding to go to in Verona at the start of October and totally clueless as to what to wear! I'm a size 10 and 5"3, little bit self conscious of my tummy after a c section. Not a fan of prints. I was thinking something like this? But I think I'll need a jacket as I've seen it can get a little chilly on the evenings but no idea what would go with this!

It's beautiful (love the colour) - but... that kind of fabric and cut hides nothing!

If you are comfortable with a bit of tummy (because no one wants to wear tight 'foundation wear' to an event - especially where there will be lovely food!) then I'd definitely try it on to see how it feels.

October should still be nice and not stinking hot, so maybe something a bit thicker/structured and fitted? And I have seen so much green this year (in Italy) and that style of dress.

Do women still take wraps to fancy events?

No advice on a specific dress, but having been a guest at an Italian wedding, you definitely want something loose around the waist. I have never eaten so much (obscenely delicious) food in one sitting before.

showmethegin · 16/08/2024 21:46

Bit left field but what about this? The bit around the waist is elasticated! Thinking with a simple low bun and simple heels and jewellery? Is it too mad, print wise?

I’m from Italy, just an hour away from Verona. I agree with previous comment, if you’re uncomfortable with your tummy then go for something loose. Italian weddings are basically “all you can eat” 😂 currently planning mine and yeah, there’s always a lot of food. It also depends where it’s going to be, I suppose indoors. But in October it can get quite cold if you’re outside. Enjoy!

Definitely go for the swan dress. It's fantastic. Your styling sounds perfect

TerrorAustralis · 17/08/2024 04:05

The first dress you posted won’t do you any favours. Bias cuts are very unforgiving. The Reiss dress is gorgeous and looks perfect for the occasion. Not sure about the print dress. I love it, but wouldn’t wear it to a wedding in Italy.

Your styling sounds on point.

NigelHarmansNewWife · 17/08/2024 04:18

The Reiss dress is gorgeous. I'd go for that. If Italian weddings are anything like Spanish ones then people tend to wear move evening style clothes than in the UK. The shrug a pp posted is lovely too.

Oriunda · 17/08/2024 07:55

Church or civil? Time of day? All the weddings I've been to in Italy have been mostly late afternoon around 6ish, because we're in the south. The early ones were in Verona and northern Italy. Definitely opt for dressier/evening wear, as weddings are long! If church, then a jacket or wrap to cover any bare shoulders.

Don't forget to cover your plate!

This is the type of fabric that doesn't forgive bumps, creases and sweat and any minor spills and even icy drinks where your hands are damp and leaves finger prints.

Arrivederla · 17/08/2024 09:38

I lived in Italy for a long time (admittedly a few years ago) and I would say that Italians tend to dress more formally than British people on the whole, and go for elegant rather than quirky...so probably not the print dress.

The Reiss dress is gorgeous, but you will need to cover your shoulders in church.

Mirabai · 17/08/2024 09:56

October in Italy isn’t that different from October here. You won’t just need a jacket for the evening.

Iloveshihtzus · 17/08/2024 11:32

The Reiss dress OP. I’m just back from Italy, Lake Garda, an hour from Verona. The Reiss dress is more of a continental look and very elegant. I’m your height and I adore it. In fact I may buy it for an event I have coming up!!!

NiggleNoggle · 17/08/2024 19:06

The Reiss dress would be perfect, it's beautiful, and forgiving.

This one is gorgeous.

I thought the first was boring.

Sandwichgen · 17/08/2024 19:20

Looking at the Kitri Swan dress in the lighter colour ways, where the shirring detail can be seen, I don’t think it is going to be as forgiving as all that

tribalmango · 18/08/2024 22:42

The Reiss dress is perfect!
I want it but have no event to wear it to

TerrysCIockworkOrange · 19/08/2024 10:45

The Reiss dress really is a beaut. I’d go for a blazer with it, not a shrug. But then I’m of an age where shrugs will forever be thought of as ageing and mumsy 😂

BigDahliaFan · 19/08/2024 15:18

The Reiss dress - that is just beautiful. I'd buy a gorgeous coat for over the top of it too....

Not this one but somethign like it...https://www.hobbs.com/product/gwen-floral-jacquard-coat/0123-3350-9845L00-OYSTER-MULTI-14.html

StormingNorman · 19/08/2024 15:21

It’s beautiful but as a longtime owner of a tummy I can tell you that bias cut satin is tricky. I would order well in advance so you can see how it fits and have time to return and find something else if needed.

Livingmagicallyagain · 19/08/2024 19:05

The swan dress! Without a shadow of a doubt! It’s stunning. Weddings in Italy are not as overly dressy as they are in the UK (it’s an Italian wedding? Or uk but taking place in Italy iykwim?). Either way, the swan dress.
