Hate my holiday hair!

dreamingtoomuch · 14/08/2024 09:22

I have long and very thick hair which means every time I wash it, I have to style it for about an hour at least otherwise it looks very frizzy and very puffy. When it is styled it looks very natural and wavy and a lot of people compliment me on my hair. Little do they know how much work goes into it looking that way. When I am on holiday I can't do absolutely anything with it. It is frizzy, puffy and it makes me feel like a completely different person. I associate feeling good with my hair looking good and I always feel crap and ugly on holiday as a result because with the heat and beach I can't do any styling to it. Anyone have the same issues or any tips? (Apart from giving up on going to hot countries!)

I have similar hair and just cut it short, but I'm guessing that wouldn't appeal to you? Have it thinned? Feels cooler too.

PrincessofWells · 14/08/2024 09:27

Put it up. It's the humidity, sometimes you just need to admit defeat!

whirlyhead · 14/08/2024 09:27

I have very very thick hair which looks dreadful long as does most thick hair, so I just cut it very short and have it thinned out massively which is great in hot places.

Why not use Kerastase SPF products, leave in conditioner and tie it up? Hairs are good as well. Hot humid weather wrecks everyone's hair whether thick or thin so you're not alone!

CeeceeBloomingdale · 14/08/2024 09:27

Mine is the same, it's always in a bun or ponytail on holiday.

Frightenedbunny · 14/08/2024 09:28

I have the opposite, fine hair. It just flops on holiday and doesn’t hold any style. Hate it!

Hopealong · 14/08/2024 09:28

My friend with similar hair puts it in a plait to dry, when she takes the plait out it has waves and looks lovely. Don't know whether you've ever tried that?

frannygallops · 14/08/2024 09:29

My hairs like a lions mane in hot weather so I stick it in a bun. Can't be bothered with all the styling it would need otherwise

FoFanta · 14/08/2024 09:29

Get some fancy hair pins and have fun styling it up into fabulous loose swirly chingnons and buns.

Alsonification · 14/08/2024 09:31

Would you try curling it with leave in products.
I have similar hair & I did so much damage to my hair from drying & straightening & colouring, not to mention the time & effort. Also if it was humid or damp out it would be for nothing anyway. So now I spray in some John Freida curl spray & let it dry naturally. Then I put some hair oil on my hands & scrunch out the crunch lol.
Does the job.
Now I only straighten it when I need to look more polished hahaha

Beamur · 14/08/2024 09:33

Plaits. Put it in plaits or something like a french braid during the day. Looks stylish and tidy and take out at night
Don't wash it daily - use a dry shampoo and maybe soft curlers overnight? Use hair creme on dry hair to smooth frizz.
Accept it's going to be different and don't stress. It almost certainly looks better than you think it does.

verywellbehaved · 14/08/2024 09:39

Is it a bit curly? Could it be manipulated into curls/waves?
My hair is naturally frizzy and thick when not smoothed and straightened but when on holiday I buy wella heat resistant gel and wash it and scrunch it and it stays wavy with no frizz for holidays and I can damp it down and reshape the next day if I don't want to wash it.

Comedycook · 14/08/2024 09:42

Are you me?! 😂

My hair is huge, frizzy and thick. At home I blow dry and straighten in tiny segments which takes ages! I only wash my hair once or twice a week because it takes so long.

It's a nightmare on holiday....I do still try! But if I can't what I do is wash, rough dry with the hair dryer...then straighten the front pieces and put it up in a claw clip.

Oh and I always take my own hair dryer on holiday....the useless ones in the hotel aren't powerful enough!

Turnitoffnonagain · 14/08/2024 13:24

I put mine in a high pony, then plait that. Use a little serum to smooth, job done.

lindyloo57 · 14/08/2024 18:45

Mine is the same, not only that, since the menopause its gone from straight to wavey which i hate, it take half hour just to straighten it, so on holiday I mostly just wear it up.

hobbledyhoy · 14/08/2024 18:47

Try Color Wow dream coat, flattens the hair shaft and is activated by heat. Prevents that 'puffy' hair effect.

Yup mine is just the same. I admit defeat and wear a ponytail or a hat.

Mynewnameis · 14/08/2024 18:50

I wear a hat. It's usually too hot for styling on holiday..although this year I've booked air conditioning!

Sorenlorrenson · 14/08/2024 19:13

Do you actually have curly hair? It sounds as if you might have. Get a curly cut, and use curly styling products and methods...bowl method, plopping, squish to condish and scrunch out the crunch.
Don't fight it! Go with it.

dreamingtoomuch · 15/08/2024 12:24

Wow, thank you so much for every one of your replies! I have literally written down every recommendation for all the styling products. To answer some questions, I will definable try plaits. I think I just need to give up on leaving it out on holiday so thank you for those suggestions. I am not sure if my hair is curly as such. Underneath seems nicer and wavier with more smoother curls/waves but the top part of the hair and top back is just frizz and puff. So if I scrunch it and leave it out, the top of my hair still stays big. Humidity means I cannot style it as the air con in hotel is deceitful 😂. I once spent an hour styling my hair in the hotel and walked out and it was a puff ball/lions mane in 30 seconds! It does sound like a lot of women have these issues but it's quite depressing when I see women on the beach leaving their hair to dry naturally with nice flat natural waves (sigh). Your responses have made me realise that I need to look at other products. I am sticking to same ones which clearly aren't working. Will try all your suggestions! 😊

Every single sentence you've written is exactly everything I do too! 😂 the front straightening bit, bringing my own hairdryer, sectioning each part! Was like reading me!!!

@dreamingtoomuch I have curly hair and similar problems. As soon as humidity hits I turn into Crystal Tipps, however much I've straightened or smoothed it. It's been a lifelong occurrence!

I have recently learned about and now just ordered Oribe anti-humidity spray. It works as a seal over the hair so that once you've styled it then sprayed, moisture/ humidity cannot permeate.

I use other Oribe hair products and they are divine, though very expensive. As is the anti-humidity spray - but based on reviews and my experience of other Oribe products and reviews of the spray I am hopeful!

ellebelli · 15/08/2024 14:44

I hate my holiday hair too!
I never feel good on holidays abroad.
Been to turkey the last 3 years and decided that is it-city breaks in cooler climes from now on,and part of that decision was because of my hair and how i look and in turn how it affects me.
Seriously I dread looking at the holiday photos because my hair looks such a mess or it's scraped into a bun.
I think I look good in the hotel room with my washed and straightened hair but as soon as we leave and go out into the heat again, frizzy sweaty mess.(so I have to admit defeat and put it up,and that just doesn't make me feel good)
During the day is even worse.
I see others who look lovely round the pool etc, hair loose and not a red sweating mess with hair stuck to their head with bits sticking up in all directions.
I took lovely dresses to wear and ended up not bothering because I just looked shit.

Sounds amazing! Tbh I am willing to pay for my hair so will definitely try this too. Thank you so much! I have been so lazy in looking at suitable products. I think I just expect my hair to miraculously change one day!

I didn't think others would feel this way but it's like reading my own thoughts. I also take lovely clothes for evening meals but feel like they just look rubbish against the mess on my head. I feel make up doesn't even look nice as my face looks different with my hair in a mess. I know a lot of it is probably psychological as others probably don't care what others look like on holiday and I'm sure no one cares about what my hair looks like. I know there are women who would kill for a thick head of hair, but it's just trying to make myself feel that way. It's because I look totally different with the two types of hair.

I have this too. Best thing I've found is to learn some quick and easy up do styles - like plaits or twists, there are loads on YouTube. Then you always look international! Much easier than endless styling, products and trying to beat the humidity.
