Who else paints their own nails?

I feel like I'm in a minority painting my own nails with a block colour.

Most of my friends pay £30+ every fortnight to get theirs done professionally.

I'm happy that it gives them a buzz, but I just don't understand the appeal myself.

Do you get your nails done regularly?

Never have, I seriously doubt I ever will.

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/08/2024 20:45

I do my own and really enjoy it. Nowhere near organised enough to plan getting anyone else to do it.

PinkPlantCase · 12/08/2024 20:45

I do not paint my nails at all. Either myself or having them done. I have never had my nails done professionally.

cocoloco23 · 12/08/2024 20:45

I’ve never had a professional manicure. I love doing my own nails. (I’m 49 if that’s relevant)

PotatoLeopard · 12/08/2024 20:47

I do my own - it’s about £55 around here. No chance am I spending that much on coloured nails.
I’ve had it done once when I was someone’s bridesmaid- I didn’t even find it a nice experience.

FatBuccaneer · 12/08/2024 20:47

I used to get mine done professionally, then I invested in all the kit and do them myself. It's a blissful couple of hours (I have very soft nails, so I do a hard gel overlay with a bit of an extension which takes ages if you're a perfectionist) on my own listening to an audio book, I love it.

BendingSpoons · 12/08/2024 20:47

I paint my own. I have found recently that people assume I have paid to have them done. This is a reflection of what is considered typical and not that I am particularly skilled at doing my nails, although I don't find it particularly tricky. I don't like the idea of gels as they are harder to remove and it always seems a lot to pay for normal polish.

SaintHonoria · 12/08/2024 20:48

I now do my own.

Vaseline every night to keep them strong and supple. File every day.

Occasionally Mavala Osaka or other nude shade.

AlisonWonderbra · 12/08/2024 20:48

The only time I've had mine done was for my wedding day. I found it really difficult to do stuff with them on too!

I work in a profession where we can't wear polish or have fake nails though.

I like to paint my own on days off.

BottomlessBrunch · 12/08/2024 20:48

Yep acrylic infills once every 3 or 4 weeks.
Painting just doesn't last I'm hard on my hands and even gel doesn't last has to be acrylic.

I do my toenails myself though probably 50 50 throughout the year whether I use my own gel kit or paint them.

LostittoBostik · 12/08/2024 20:50

I'm 42 and I bite my nails. They are so tiny they're never painted. Not an attractive trait, I accept. I've tried everything including therapy to break the habit which I've had since the age of 11. I suspect I'll be biting on my deathbed

honeyfox · 12/08/2024 20:50

I mostly do them myself but have had them done professionally, but I don't like the way they reshape them or file the surface of the nail down. I had shellac done last year for a wedding and got it removed somewhere closer to home. She destroyed my nails and left them bleeding so I'm done now, never again. I use nail wraps now or paint them myself.

Bettedaviseyes111 · 12/08/2024 20:50

I paint my own. I’m a single mum with a full time job …. I don’t have the time or finances to get them done for me!

SirChenjins · 12/08/2024 20:50

I do my own - I like being able to change the colour as and when I choose and find my nails are in a much better condition than when I occasionally got them done. Plus time & cost - I’ve better things to do with both.

Mum2jenny · 12/08/2024 20:51

No way am I paying ppl to paint my nails for £30, can paint my own for much less.

stripytees · 12/08/2024 20:56

Always do my own. Usually twice a week. I've got really good at it over the years so they always look neat.

I'd never get gels done especially reading about the serious allergies they can cause.

viques · 12/08/2024 20:58

I do my own. Finger nails currently bare, but toes are a gorgeous red called Big Apple, or something similar.

Bearpawk · 12/08/2024 21:00

I do mine as I like the look of gels but can't have them because of the UV lamps.
Push back cuticles, snip with cuticle pliers. Base coat, Essie polish, Seche vite top coat which is incredible and looks like gel finish, and I keep a cuticle oil in my desk tidy at work.
Do them once a week and usually take them off one day to let them breathe.

stripedstripes · 12/08/2024 21:00

I am terrible at painting my own nails and I hate doing it. I pay £30 for gel nails every 3 weeks and it’s worth every penny to me. (And I get 20% off every time I fill my loyalty card.)

Edited to add: I could go less often but I like my nails very short. Baffled by PP who dislike how they reshape them - they should be giving you a choice of what shape.

TheChosenTwo · 12/08/2024 21:03

I’ve done my own for years, I used to get them done but it was a hassle trying to work out a good time around dh/working/kids etc. it was a minimum of 2 hours and I just gave up bothering. My nails were very soft too.
Now paint my own, I’m really fast at it, they always look tidy and I cover them with the seche vite. Usually do it when I’m in bed and the top coat means they are dry quickly and I can go to sleep without them getting all wrinkly!
Will never look back.

deeahgwitch · 12/08/2024 21:03

I do my own.
One coat of a soft shimmer or the very odd occasion a deeper colour.
Anytime I've got them done professionally it's been a Shellac or BIAB which have left my nails afterwards in tatters.

Gininvolved · 12/08/2024 21:03

Stats show that women over 45 are the target market for DIY nails and I include myself in that group ( used to work in the field )

i have always preferred to do my own and like somebody else above said I’ve become so relaxed about it that people assume I get them done professionally.

I could afford to pay somebody but don’t see the need.

mdinbc · 12/08/2024 21:04

Not often, but I do mine on occasion. I tend to like soft semi-sheer colours; they are less distracting and less likely to notice chips after a few days.

I like OPI Kyoto Pearl, or Sally Hansen Jell-ous which is a dupe for Dior's Nail Envy. It just gives a shiny pink glow, but still clear.

TappyGilmore · 12/08/2024 21:09

I get mine done regularly but it’s the next thing that is going to be cut from the budget as I can’t afford it anymore. I always get paler colours so that it’s not so noticeable when it grows out and it lasts a bit longer. Can generally make it last for 4 weeks.

Gingertam · 12/08/2024 21:09

I paint my own. I do still have gel for a holiday or special occasion, but I like the fact that normal nail polish is easy to remove. I can get a week out of mine with a good base coat and top coat. If you buy one of those nail polish corrector pens to neaten up I think you end up with quite a professional result. People have asked me where I have my nails done in the past so they must look okay.
