Have I gone dress delulu?

I bought this dress for my upcoming holiday but I suddenly suspect that it's a bit undignified for a 42 year old. It feels lovely and swishy but have I been stupidly seduced by a big discount and a hot day? Or should I keep it?

My legs are very white, it occurs to me, but I'm not really a fake tan girl so that's how they will stay.

I hate the print though you have a lovely figure and legs, I'm afraid I also hate the frilly style so wouldn't like it in a different print/colour.
I'm about 10 years older than you for reference but am happy to wear knee length dresses, shorts etc.

Doggymummar · 31/07/2024 17:29

It doesn't look very nicem especially at that price. It might look good with a tan when you return. Or with opaques in the winter

drspouse · 31/07/2024 17:29

(I'm also quite short. Can never get maxi dresses that I don't trip over. Recently tried to buy linen trousers in Zara that were LITERALLY twice the length of my legs).

DGPP · 31/07/2024 17:30

Looks horrible and really cheap, sorry

LakelandDreams · 31/07/2024 17:30

You've a great figure and nothing to do with age. It's just a horrible dress. Cheap and the print looks cheaper, plus it just hangs like a sack. You can find much better.

Espanole · 31/07/2024 15:39

It is Ganni - it was reduced to £69 so not wildly expensive

Maybe not objectively expensive. But it certainly doesn't look like £69 worth. It looks like it was about £6 in Primark. Sorry, OP.

I did too, back it goes OP!

The proportions are all wrong, sleeves too long and hem too short.

You have a great figure ,there are tons of other options that will look better (and less flammable !)

Lentilweaver · 31/07/2024 17:38

Annoyed that even the high end brands like Ganni are doing all polyester and charging for it.

There is a fair bit of fashion snobbery on this board ( not from OP) " Ooh I would never be caught dead in M and S or Tu"- but I have often seen Tu dresses nicer than this one because at least they are in cotton.

usernother · 31/07/2024 17:42

I think it's more of a winter dress and would look better with opaque tights and boots.

user8464987632 · 31/07/2024 17:43

That style which creates an inverted V shape makes everyone look like they have saggy boobs. I'm sure you don't have saggy boobs OP.

I think it looks cheap and too wide for you I'm afraid. Sorry OP.

Totally agree.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/07/2024 18:00

There’s nothing wrong with the length. Your legs look great and I like the sandals.

I don’t like the dress though and you’ll boil if you’re going anywhere warm.

PurpleReindeer2 · 31/07/2024 18:01

Sorry OP. Send it back.

mybeautifulhorse · 31/07/2024 18:29

I'm older than you and wouldn't wear it because it looks really frumpy to me. So it's definitely not too young for you, or too short - the length is fine - it's just not a nice dress!

That said, nobody is asking me to wear it and if you like it and feel good in it then keep it.

I do always think with these threads though, if you have to ask - then you don't like it enough to really enjoy it, and at that price I think you need to love it.

PruneInTheNest · 31/07/2024 18:32

Looks nice on you, fits nicely- but when I read it was still £69 in the sale I was shocked. It looks like a primark or boohoo type cheap dress for under £20.

WouldUSayImWorthy · 31/07/2024 18:36

Ok it looks ever so slightly cheap and cheerful. But do what? It's fun and flirty and summery and it suits you.

Different shoes though!

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 31/07/2024 18:57

I'd keep it, even for no other reason than it's been declared to be "unflattering"

So many interesting clothes are declared unflattering. "Unflattering" is a reccomendation

And of course polyester can be swishy. Keep it. No need for fake tan.

Ganni

There's nothing inherently unstylish about polyester. Baum und Pferdgarten, Sister Jane and Wiggy Kit for example use polyester, and produce interesting clothes. There's polyester and polyester.

PragmaticDramatic · 31/07/2024 19:16

Is this a Ganni dress by any chance? I think it looks good.

I do agree with this somewhat. I don't feel the need to dress only in clothes that show my shape.

Mmm there's like 4 comments regarding whether it's flattering, and like 20 regarding the fact it looks cheap. I don't think most people are objecting to it being unflattering (I'm not saying it is or isn't). If you're defending it you clearly like it, so keep it? 🤷🏻‍♀️

I guess I disagree. Polyester always looks and feels slippery and sweaty to me, even if it is a high end brand. And in this weather!

I don't think this is an interesting dress, either.

masomenos · 31/07/2024 19:48

I really don’t know what everyone else is on about: you wear it well, you’ve got great legs, it fits, it’s machine washable. 42 has got nothing to do with it: unless your face is massively wrinkled and prematurely aged, this is a great dress for you (and I normally hate animal print). I’d wear it with a straw hat and not-black shoes/sandals (NOT trainers).

StMarieforme · 31/07/2024 19:48

Please don't add leggings! It will age you so much.

The Dove tanning moisturiser is good for taking the edge off lol!

But you look great! Wear it! 😊😊

StMarieforme · 31/07/2024 19:51

I'd wear it if it suited my shape (I'm too top heavy so it wouldn't). I'd wear it without leggings. I'm 61. 😊😊

Lentilweaver · 31/07/2024 19:54

yes, the length wouldn't be a problem for me. I wear shorter dresses and I am 52.
