Have I gone dress delulu?

I bought this dress for my upcoming holiday but I suddenly suspect that it's a bit undignified for a 42 year old. It feels lovely and swishy but have I been stupidly seduced by a big discount and a hot day? Or should I keep it?

My legs are very white, it occurs to me, but I'm not really a fake tan girl so that's how they will stay.

Have I gone dress delulu?

It is Ganni - it was reduced to £69 so not wildly expensive

Maybe not objectively expensive. But it certainly doesn't look like £69 worth. It looks like it was about £6 in Primark. Sorry, OP.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 31/07/2024 15:41

It looks cheap to say its been reduced to £69

WeRateSquirrels · 31/07/2024 15:41

I think the length is fine and you don't need fake tan. Not keen on the print or frilly bit though, and not a polyester fan.

bfsham · 31/07/2024 15:42

The shape of the dress and if's length are all fine and suit your figure /shape. I just don't like the look of the material or leopard print. I think you should get some false tan or that gradual moisturiser on your legs though.

Dartmoorcheffy · 31/07/2024 15:42

I'm.54 and I would wear that, but with thick black tights and boots. It's more an autumn/winter dress to me. I like it.

Apileofballyhoo · 31/07/2024 15:43

I thought you'd posted a picture of the model. You're only 42, you might not feel comfortable wearing similar when you're 62 and kick yourself about not wearing things now.

Cantonet · 31/07/2024 15:48

I like it & you've got a great shape for it.
Why would you need to put leggings on- perplexed. I love the way that essentially everyone feels free to criticise everything on here these days.

SuncreamAndIceCream · 31/07/2024 16:09

I don't see what's wrong with trying something that's objectively fashionable/current at the age of 42

I hate all this "it's not flattering" stuff. Like women over the age of 35 can only wear things that make the most of their figure or disguise areas they're not happy with.

I thought the OP was inviting criticism? That's why I chimed in.
I dont think she should wear leggings though. Nobody should wear leggings with dresses.

UpTheMagicFarawayTree · 31/07/2024 16:13

You look lovely, but to me the dress is awful. Nothing to do with your age, its just cheap and nasty looking.

Comefromaway · 31/07/2024 16:14

The print isn't my style but that's the exact style of dress I would wear and I am 50.

TomatoSandwiches · 31/07/2024 16:16

You have a lovely figure and clear skin, the dress is not a nice dress imo and would look horrid on anyone of any age.

It looks cheap and if you took the sleeves off it would resemble those flimsy naff bedroom outfits.

You deserve something better, can you still take it back?

BaronessBomburst · 31/07/2024 16:20

The dress is lovely. It's just the shoes that are wrong.
Do you have flats in a neutral peach or pale tan?

XiCi · 31/07/2024 16:22

Why on earth would anyone wear leggings with a perfectly normal length dress in the summer 🙄, especially when you have good legs. The print and frills aren't for me OP but it looks nice on you and if you love it you should keep it

Wahine24 · 31/07/2024 16:29

I'm not a fan of it being honest
It looks Primark /Asda not Ganni but if we all liked the same life would be boring

GreatDarkWing · 31/07/2024 16:33

@Cantonet I definitely wouldn't wear leggings with it - tights and boots in winter would be fine, though.

@BaronessBomburst I have the same sandals in a sand shade, also some trainers that might work.

Thank you all for your views! Nothing at all offensive here and I was of course asking for opinions. Glad I didn't post it in AIBU!

You have a great figure so if it’s your style and you love it then keep it. I don’t personally like the print/shape/length but that’s just my taste. I think it goes nicely with pale skin.

Newposter180 · 31/07/2024 16:40

People on here are weirdly devoted to wearing leggings under dresses I find?! I think that’s quite an odd look.
Just seen that it’s Ganni - I’m afraid I’d never have guessed that type of brand from looking at it, I think it looks a lot cheaper than you’d expect from them, sorry!

I don't see it IRL. I see people bare legged or with tights.

Yeah, it's clearly been reduced for a reason. If I saw OP in the street I'd assume it was on a par with these from Shein or New Look. Have you been tempted by the brand name OP? I think these are nicer alternatives:

M&S
Kiwi and Co (really like this actually)
Nobodys Child

BobbyBiscuits · 31/07/2024 17:20

I think it's cute. But I don't really associate animal print with summer holidays. I'd wear it with boots and black tights in autumn with an oversized cardigan. But it's certainly fine for your age and figure. If it wasn't too expensive I'd keep it.

Fond memories of when it was the height of fashion in the mid/late noughties

LightSpeeds · 31/07/2024 17:22

I think it looks fine - if you're worried about the length then do what a pp said and wear leggings or shorts.

A few accessories (jewellery and lovely sandals) will make you look great.

Cheeesus · 31/07/2024 17:24

I thought it was the model too. Looks good.

radio4everyday · 31/07/2024 17:25

£69?!

It looks much cheaper, sorry
