Is this Pearl Ring too frumpy?

Too Queen Mother? I'm 45 and looking for something to wear on my right hand as left is wedding and engagement stack. Another option is a Sapphire ring but wondering if this is too POW and might also be too clashing with clothes depending on the day and what colours I wear etc.

I prefer the sapphire, I don't dislike the pearl one though! X

Billyballyboo · 31/07/2024 09:48

They are both lovely.

Sunnyshoeshine · 31/07/2024 09:50

Are you planning on wearing it every day? I'd be worried about the pearl getting damaged on the left photo. Its a lovely ring though.

MonsteraMama · 31/07/2024 09:52

I love pearls but I wouldn't wear one day to day as they're just so fragile, I think the hardier sapphire would be better for normal daily wear.

FamouslyFrothy · 31/07/2024 09:52

I really like the pearl one, it's very unusual. I don't get Queen Mother vibes but maybe if you start straying into a gin dubonnet habit you know you've gone too far!

LoveBlueCheese · 31/07/2024 09:53

I would like to wear it every day. Super torn! But leaning towards the pearl as I feel it blends in better. But yes I'd worry about it getting damaged. The sapphire is great but less of a wow factor when worn compared to the pearl.

I've got nothing against the pearl, but from a practicality point of view, the pearl will be raised up more and is very soft - 2.5 on the mohs hardness scale- so much more susceptible to damage in everyday wear than the sapphire which is 9.0 on the mohs hardness scale. There's a reason why pearls are usually used for necklaces and earrings.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 31/07/2024 09:56

The pearl will get scratched and discoloured quickly and then fall off if you wear it every day. It is the big problem with pearls unfortunately!

Megjobethamy · 31/07/2024 09:58

I think that's quite an old fashioned style? Maybe the attached are more suitable and contemporary?

I don't understand the objections to good jewellery or good costume jewellery being "old fashioned" or "frumpy" except possibly Victorian mourning jewellery and even that might have a niche market appeal for teenage Goths

I have jewellery ranging from Georgian, Victorian and Edwardian to contemporary, which I wear because I like the look. Have to say I've never even thought about the colour of a ring clashing with clothes.

I have an emerald and seed pearl ring which started life as a pair of earrings but was set as a ring when I lost one. The seed pearls are fragile and I've had to replace them two of them. They have a far less prominent setting than your ring.

Both rings are nice but the pearl risks being damaged in every day constant use.

memyselfi · 31/07/2024 13:59

The pearl ring is beautiful but it's not a ring for all day every day , it won't be durable .
I find the sapphire to be the more old fashioned of the two, personally I'd prefer it without the diamonds .

Floralnomad · 31/07/2024 14:09

The Pearl one is much nicer but impractical as an everyday ring , the sapphire one is a bit ordinary

MissAtomicBomb1 · 31/07/2024 14:44

Go for the pearl if that's the one that you love..
I've worn an antique opal ring given to me by my late granny, every day for the last 20 years and it's held up fine. I don't take it off ever unless I'm baking or doing something really messy!

Meadowwild · 31/07/2024 14:53

I prefer the pearl. I love sapphires but that looks like an engagement ring to me. The pearl doesn't. It is more unusual.

Lampslights · 31/07/2024 14:55

The sapphire looks like a knock off of Diana’s to me I’m afraid. And the pearl one quite old fashioned. And I say that as someone who wears pearl studs.

Lochroy · 31/07/2024 15:27

I think they are both very old fashioned in style. Pearls in general, small clusters around the outside, and the shape of the sapphire. (Sorry!)

GettingStuffed · 31/07/2024 15:40

Jewellery comes around in phases. I love that pearl one, where some people says it's old fashioned I'd say it's vintage. Vintage stuff is in fashion .

ghislaine · 31/07/2024 15:43

Have you inherited these rings? I would be tempted to take the pearl ring and have the stones reset as a necklace.

The sapphire does give off POW knock-off vibes to me, I'm afraid.

Mishmashs · 31/07/2024 15:44

I’ve worn an antique Pearl ring every day for 12 years. It’s not been damaged or worn. I would go for the one which makes you feel happy, rings are a very personal choice.

Yes me too, I’d not look at that and think oh that’s lovely. I’d think cheap copy of Diana’s. As in comparison that’s exactly what it is,

VirginiaGirl · 31/07/2024 18:10

It’s not frumpy, it looks vintage. If you like it, wear it.

chattyness · 31/07/2024 18:12

I'm not keen on either one, but it your choice, for me pearl earrings yes, rings I don't like, no specific reason just the way I feel. I love sapphires, but like them to be deeper in colour. Another fan of opals here, my engagement ring is a flower cluster of garnets and opals . If I could afford it I'd buy another opal ring for my right hand
