Are you still wearing skinny jeans? If not what’s your alternative?

I know they are supposed to be deeply unfashionable these days (according to dd16 and all the fashion websites etc) but I have tried every other type of jean and they just do me no justice at all.

I’m 51 and like to keep trendy but I’m also in peri. I’m 5’5, a size 10 with slim arms and legs but my middle is like a giant marshmallow. I also have IBS and endo and can bloat easily so hate anything super tight digging in. A pair of stretchy high waisted skinny jeans ticked the boxes for me.

These wide-legged jeans/trousers look great on ladies like my friend who has larger boobs than me, a lovely small waist and bigger bums but on my rectangular shape I look awful. Wide legs trousers only look good with a tighter top imo and tight tops on apple shapes like me isn’t a good look.

I love a skinny jean, nice shirt/blouse and blazer but feel like it’s quite dated now.

I’ve resorted to looking like my 16 year old and am living in leggings, t shirts or sweatshirts these days but I need a smarter look for weekends etc.

What can I wear that is comfy, suits my shape but still looks fashionable?

Mom jeans are apparently great for us with rounded bellies but I’m yet to find any with stretch, and petite…

SaltyGod · 25/07/2024 14:52

If you love your skinny jeans just wear them. But given that you’ve started this thread I wonder if you are maybe not so in love with them that you’re looking for something else?

I transitioned from skinny to straight. I found a rolled hem helped to balance proportions. I’m now fully converted to wide legged and/ or baggy. Skinnies now feel like torture to me, so tight and restrictive, I have only one pair that I wear with wellies.

The key was finding a pair that fit just right, not too much stretch as this seemed to emphasise any tummy. This took many, many pairs before I found the right ones (NYDJ, Hush and Mango work best for me)

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 25/07/2024 18:01

I'm short and have a bigger tummy than hips and have always found a lowish rise. fitted round the arse but flaring out a bit ( not massively) works. Sort of boyfriend style.

It distracts from the gut and you can wear a tight or looser tops.

Skinny jeans don't flatter my age - skinny legs with a menopausal tum.

ShinyPebble32 · 25/07/2024 20:07

I was a die hard skinny wearer until about 6 months ago. Now I wear slim straight leg jeans rolled up to the ankle, and do have a pair of gasp mom jeans that I think look alright. They’re the Stradivarius slim mom Jean. Also wear some wide-leg cargo pants, and lots of long ruched or wrap skirts.
Still wear my leather-look skinnies with some outfits.

OhcantthInkofaname · 25/07/2024 20:09

They have never suited me. I wear high waisted boot cut jeans always have. Good ones last forever.

CaraVann · 25/07/2024 23:05

Thanks everyone.

So I popped into my local M&S today and tried on a variety of styles. Still can’t get onboard with the wide legged or bootlegged ones. I didn’t like the bootlegged ones first time round in the 90’s and still not a fan they just make me feel frumpy for some reason.
However, I did purchase some of their slim fit (Lily jeans) and their Harper cigarette jeans which are lovely and soft.

I also couldn’t resist trying on some of their skinnies which I still love but held off buying today!

If I were going to buy any skinnies, which I'm not as I seem to have one of every jean type at the moment, I'd buy black or grey ones for this autumn and go for the Claudia Winkleman baggy jumper, fingerless gloves gothic vibe, I think that still looks quite cool.

Great you tried stuff on OP, sounds like you have at least another couple of options now, and I agree material is everything with jeans.

I love that look too, I do have several
black and grey skinnies in the wardrobe so will keep them for winter.

@Alwaystimeforacupoftea agreed, I wear slightly alternative style and tbh skinnies have always been in for that scene, even before they became mainstream, its part of the look Smile

BiccysR4dunking · 17/09/2024 18:41

yes I love skinny jeans no one told me they'd gone out of fashion! but tbh I don't really care at my age, late 40s. wear whatever you like and feel comfortable in op.

DillDanding · 17/09/2024 18:47

I found it hard to give up my skinny jeans and coated leggings. I had so many and had worn them for years.

But at the moment, there is nothing more dated looking.

I’ve bought anything but skinny - wide legs, mom style, boyfriend, palazzo, cigarette, and most recently, 2 pairs of cargo pants.

Csb1611 · 06/07/2025 05:26

Help , I'm 62 and have been wearing skinny jeans longer than all of you :
1 feel as if they're the only style that suits me too, but admire the wider leg look on older women l need help with styles to help my transition from 1980 to 2025 please!

musicalfrog · 06/07/2025 08:18

Personally I love my paper bag jeans, they hide a multitude of sins, but only good for summer really as I don't like them with boots.

They probably aren't fashionable any more though, bought them a few years ago in Next.

Normallynumb · 06/07/2025 09:59

i have found Fat Face “ Sway slim” to be a perfect compromise I’m 60 now and can’t stand extra material flapping around
i need a 27’ leg and a find the cropped length perfect
Good quality too
i would buy a pair on Vinted to try and if you don’t like them you’ve spent £5, not £50
i posted earlier that I would be buried in my skinnies so I get you!

PlushLily · 06/07/2025 10:37

Have you tried straight leg (something like levi 314)?
Have you considered an appointment with John Lewis stylist (free)?
I don't suit wide leg jeans either, but some cropped ones (not too wide leg) are better, as long as my ankles show.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/07/2025 10:51

Size 10, hour glass shape, 5’ 6. Still have my skinnies but not worn them in a few years. Loving wide leg ones at the moment (got a cracking pair from Urban Outfitters) which I never thought I would! Also love my 501 straight leg mum jeans cut, with a slight crop to show the ankle - great with an oversized blazer, and great shoes, lol.

Legoninjago1 · 06/07/2025 10:53

Skinnies for me!

PersephoneSeethes · 06/07/2025 10:53

Apparently skinny jeans are coming back in? I don’t know where I read it but who cares. Just wear skinny jeans.

tillyandmilly · 06/07/2025 10:56

mom jeans are the way to go - never liked skinny jeans as have fat knees and big calves so they always looked awful on me !

Gall10 · 06/07/2025 10:58

Please don’t let ‘fashion’ dictate your wardrobe. I’m sure you look great in your jeans & blazer…sounds classic & can easily be dressed up or down.
High street shops at the minute seem to be full of trousers & jeans that would not look out of place on a tea clipper or stately Spanish galleon (that’s 60’s education for you!) but next year will be different so just keep wearing what you’re comfortable in enjoy life!

Fedupwithneighbours · 06/07/2025 11:03

I’m a similar size and shape to you and have found Levi 501s (regular or cropped) fit me well. Also like barrel leg jeans and a got surprisingly good pair from Mango

minipie · 06/07/2025 11:11

I’m the opposite shape to you OP, I’m an hourglass/pear and skinnies were dreadful for me. I’m enjoying the wide legs while they last!

Barrel leg or tapered jeans are also on trend - you might find those more flattering?

Alternatively, in your shoes I’d probably ditch the trousers and wear lots of short dresses and skirts. With tights in winter and without in summer. Or shorts in summer. I’m envious of your legs!
