Are you still wearing skinny jeans? If not what’s your alternative?

I know they are supposed to be deeply unfashionable these days (according to dd16 and all the fashion websites etc) but I have tried every other type of jean and they just do me no justice at all.

I’m 51 and like to keep trendy but I’m also in peri. I’m 5’5, a size 10 with slim arms and legs but my middle is like a giant marshmallow. I also have IBS and endo and can bloat easily so hate anything super tight digging in. A pair of stretchy high waisted skinny jeans ticked the boxes for me.

These wide-legged jeans/trousers look great on ladies like my friend who has larger boobs than me, a lovely small waist and bigger bums but on my rectangular shape I look awful. Wide legs trousers only look good with a tighter top imo and tight tops on apple shapes like me isn’t a good look.

I love a skinny jean, nice shirt/blouse and blazer but feel like it’s quite dated now.

I’ve resorted to looking like my 16 year old and am living in leggings, t shirts or sweatshirts these days but I need a smarter look for weekends etc.

What can I wear that is comfy, suits my shape but still looks fashionable?

Thanks all.

I recently ordered some slightly flared jeans, mom jeans and looser fit ones and tried them on at home but they all made me feel much larger than I am, just felt so uncomfortable.

I’m popping to the shops tomorrow and will try on some slimmer fit ones but failing that I’ll carry on with my skinny’s.

I might try some skirts but haven’t worn a skirt in about 20 years, I’ve never felt comfortable in them.

I've changed to bootlegs. Fitted at the top of my legs so create some shape. M&S do nice stretchy ones that work with my wider waste and smaller hips.

onesmallstepforman · 24/07/2024 23:12

Why are you so concerned to be on trend? Wear what you feel comfortable and confidence with most. I honestly believe you feeling comfortable with yourself does the trick more than ticking the latest trend boxes.
I also don't think you can categorically say that skinny jeans are out, I see plenty of them around on all ages and still in shops. I am by no means fashionista but quite observant and from what I can see fashion today is a mix of anything and everything, hard to categorise, which is actually the point - total individuality. Wear with a nice top and punchy accessories, nice pair of shoes etc. It's ok!!!

Palazzo jeans from M&S are amazing, but they’re always sold out! Love mine. size up

Outside of tiktok, skinny/slim jeans have never gone out of fashion. There's been a recent trend for wider leg (there's also been a trend for blue hair - fortunately trends aren't obligatory 😂). I hate wide leg jeans, always have.
Slim/skinny jeans look best with loose fitting longline tops. Or layered tops (longline vest/t shirt underneath).

Not moi! Wide legs all the way. So much more comfortable and flattering

TheOGCCL · 25/07/2024 08:31

I was having this discussion with a saleswoman in a Levi’s shop the other day. She said as she was short she couldn’t get on with the baggier shapes, as she stood surrounded by a mass of loose jeans 😂. She also said as I had ‘lovely slim legs’ I should show them off. I’m nearly 5”5 but have the legs of someone much shorter, and skinnies really do elongate my legs.

I do have some other jean shapes, mainly ones that are just a little more relaxed but not flapping about. Next have some new ones literally called relaxed slim at the moment. www.next.co.uk/style/su244608/362410#362410

The other thing to do is to wear volume on your upper body, e,g a big shirt or blouse, which is tucked in or hits at the waist. So no tunic style tops or fitted things. There needs to be a balance in the proportions.

I agree with whoever said bootcut. They're slim fitting at the top so you can still wear longer/looser tops with them. Next have good ones, so do M&S (Eva Bootcut) There are loads on Vinted so you could get some from there to try first.

ForGreyKoala · 25/07/2024 08:44

I've never worn skinny jeans, I've been wearing bootcut for years as I find them far more flattering. Flares are good also.

itsgoingtobeabumpyride · 25/07/2024 09:37

I'm slowly moving over to a straight leg but still wear my skinnies.
With a straight leg I do a french tuck on my tops, usually a tea shirt or a shirt.
I'm tall with no curves so I look like a ruler, I find a french tuck gives me a bit of shape

Alwaystimeforacupoftea · 25/07/2024 09:47

I had this dilemma and was convinced only skinnies looked good on me.

I do think very tight blue skinnies do look a bit dated though, so I tried a few different options and they've worked out great.

One is just to buy baggier skinnies, or slim leg jeans, that gives a bit more room and stops them looking very tight on the leg.

Another is to get straight leg with a bit of a flare at the bottom, I picked some of these up on Vinted and they look great.

I also have some bigger flares in dark jean material, these elongate the leg a lot.

Finally, I do have a couple of pairs of wider legs, but with baggyish waists pulled in with a great belt, and some wide legged navy trousers that fit well on the waist. They don't show off my slim legs but I wear them with tighter tops and a baggy shirt over the top and with jewellery, I think they look cool (my teen/twenties dds say so).

I think part of your attachment to skinnies is your discomfort with showing your stomach. Once you start to work that out (ribbed vests, linen and cotton shirts on the top) you will feel better about the leg shape.

Thewaytogohome · 25/07/2024 10:06

I still wear skinnies, but also mom high waisted. Recently I got these, and they're very comfy. Because they're cropped there's not the issue of material dragging on the ground in the inevitable wet weather. River Island cropped wide leg (petite)

Thewaytogohome · 25/07/2024 10:07

By the way, I'm 5 foot 4 with perimenopause stomach.

suki1964 · 25/07/2024 10:12

59, 5'2 wear size 8 skinny jeans, super skinny that are a nightmare to get off over the foot, and if it werent for the belly Id be in a size 6

If I have to wear trousers, I go for a pleated tapered leg, preferably with an elastic waist at the back so I can wear small enough so Im not walking around with a saggy, non exsistant looking arse - I mean it is a saggy non exsistant arse but too much fabric really emphasises theres nothing there

Jeans are part of our uniform in work and I work with a bunch of lasses who are students and I love their jean choices and would love to wear them, but the truth is I look like a diddy man in any other style

Being a triangle with sticks for arms and legs I dress for me, fashion can go to hell in a handcart

chattyness · 25/07/2024 10:31

OP you sound like the same size & shape as me, I still wear my high waisted skinny jeans and love them, I don't care if they're out of fashion, I feel comfortable & happy with how they look so that's all that matters. I get mine from simply be

skibiditoilet · 25/07/2024 10:32

I’m 49 and will wear skinny jeans to the day I die. I’m yet to find out who wrote the rule which says you have to follow fashion.

YearsofYears · 25/07/2024 10:55

I don't wear jeans much in the warmer summer months and have a few looser styles but definitely hanging on to my m&s Ivy indigo skinnies. They're high waisted and I sized up so they're not too skinny. I feel great in them :)

GinBlossom94 · 25/07/2024 11:10

I'm 45 and still wearing skinnies, no way am I going back to jeans wet up to my knees - they can stay in the 90s! I'm short, and petite ranges never fit right either

Cantonet · 25/07/2024 11:11

No. Mainly because of late I hate the feeling of being constricted in lycra, as it makes my skin crawl. Weird I know.

I wear straight button fronted straight legs, barrel shaped from the Sienna Miller collab & Free people Osaka jeans.

Hurdygurdygirl · 25/07/2024 11:36

I have moved from skinny jeans to M&S Lily slim. They are less tight than skinny but still nice and slim for someone with skinny legs like me.

Divebar2021 · 25/07/2024 11:51

You’ve reached a crossroads where the clothes that you want to wear are at odds with the trends. ( and in the south east skinny jeans are not much in evidence ). What direction do you want to go in ? Wear something you feel good in but doesn’t feel trendy or try and find a newer alternative.? Perhaps now is the time to work on your own personal style. I follow someone on IG who is focused on finding your own style - her name is Jennine Jacobs… perhaps check out some of her videos and see if it helps.

eatreadsleeprepeat · 25/07/2024 12:01

Like you I live in skinny jeans or jeggings except in properly warm weather. Also like you I felt I needed an update so went to Fatface and tried on different styles. I now have my first pair of real flares in about 45 years, seriously comfortable and balance my thighs nicely. Cannot see me giving up my jeggings completely but need to repeat the trying every possible style exercise again for the winter.
Give yourself a trip to somewhere with a range of styles!

Fantane · 25/07/2024 12:10

I've reluctantly stopped wearing skinny jeans and have lived in mom jeans and midi/maxi skirts this summer. BUT I will be back in skinnies in the winter because (in my opinion) mom and wide leg jeans look terrible with boots, and I need boots in the winter - can't be bothered with cold ankles and rain seeping up my trousers!

Divasaurus · 25/07/2024 14:00

I don’t care what is in or out - in my opinion it is much more fashionable and stylish to wear what actually suits you and cultivate your own individual style. I love skinny jeans and they look the best on my size 12-14 hourglass shape (anything wider just makes me look wide and shapeless), so I will carry on wearing them regardless!

RosieChardonnay · 25/07/2024 14:33

I think people look best wearing what suits them and what they feel comfortable in.
Wearing something just because it's fashionable is not a great look if it doesn't suit you.
I think the wide leg jeans look great on teens and those with long legs. Personally I don't feel comfortable in wide or baggy jeans, it just feels like too much fabric to walk around in. I quite like bootcut but only with heels.
Also I don't want to dress like my teenage daughter so have to take this into consideration.
